Former Rangers assistant Daniel Lacroix, who just left the Rangers for Montreal, was a guest on Oilers Now on 630 CHED.

On AV and the Rangers, "Alain is a patient guy, he has been there and done that and is a smart coach and we went through some rough times at the start, we had a tough schedule, but we stayed the course and AV stayed the course with the players and game plan and it paid off. It took some time to get comfortable as a staff, it took some time for the players to get comfortable with a totally different coaching style but I thought one of his great strengths was his patience to go along with his teaching.

On Benoit Pouliot, "I have had the pleasure to work with Ben in Tampa and NY. He had a tough start to his season, like everyone, so when things don't go so well you need to look around and try to get more out of each and every player and that is an example of a player who Alain was patient with and put him in a winning situation with Brassard and finally Zuccarello and they had a good working chemistry together. Benny goes to the net pretty hard, he works extremely hard. Ben, per minutes played, he was actually our second leading hit getter. He is a physical guy and gets in on the forecheck and his teammates will get pucks because he uses his stick to get pucks. He has pretty good speed, a wicked shot, and he is a good guy to be around."

Dan Lacroix?spoke with John Giannone on MSG before game two between the Rangers and Penguins:

  • On the PP and keeping it simple, "I think there is, if you start squeezing your stick and over thinking plays, on the PP we want to get back to basics, move the puck early, establish a shot and get some bodies to the front of the net."
  • Are you surprised the PP has struggled so much, "we are playing against some really good teams, really good PKs and sometimes momentum shifts early in a game and it's tough to get it back. We want to keep the momentum, PP isn't just about scoring, it's about getting the momentum back on our side, if you have good control and get good entry the pucks will go in the net."
  • What is the message to the team, "we want to come out strong, we know they will come out with their best effort, especially a home after the last game, we need some really strong shifts early, get four lines rolling and get a good road game to start."
  • How desperate are the Rangers, "it's a desperate time of year and everyone needs to play hard, we know we have a good start to the series and want to back it up with another solid game."

When Alain Vigneault was talking about what he wanted in a third assistant coach, he mentioned that he wanted someone who would be an "eye in the sky," help with practice, player development and pre-scouting.

Vigneault hired Danny Lacroix and told the Edmonton Journal that a main reason he picked Lacroix was because of his experience in the Eastern Conference, something that neither Vigneault, Scott Arniel or Ulf Samuelsson brought with them.

Vigneault said that Lacroix can provide information and backstories on different players as well as playing styles for other teams.

On MSG, Sam Rosen spoke with Rangers assistant coach Danny Lacroix:

  • how do you score goals, "we need to generate primary and secondary chances. It's the second chances, the rebounds and defensemen getting pucks to the net. We need to get inside the defense and get to the net.
  • What are you seeing, "it comes to at times we have pressure and we get one puck on net and the nit's out of the zone. We need to spend more time forechecking, reloading and getting on their forwards on the breakout."
  • On the top two centers, "players start over thinking instead of playing on instincts. At times they need to relax and play their games and play hard. The points will be a byproduct of winning battles and playing hard. It's a five man unit, we need to battle on the inside and work hard to get goals.
  • On the positives, "we aren't giving up a lot of 5 on 5 chances. Our PK has looked good, we are moving well on the PP. We want to score more on the PP but we feel it's moving in the right direction.
