Second baseman Daniel Murphy has tormented the Mets since leaving them to sign a three-year, $37.5 million contract with the Nationals after the 2015 season.

Murphy will again be a free agent this winter at a time when the Mets are expected -- yet again -- to be in search of everyday second baseman. The Mets would be smart to consider bringing Murphy back 1) to fill multiple spots on their roster, but also 2) to get him out of the opposing batter's box.

The Nationals traded Murphy last month to the Cubs, with whom he had just two hits in nine plate appearances against the Mets last week at Wrigley Field. However, prior to his recent two-game set against the Mets, he had been hitting .392 with 25 extra base hits and 43 RBI during just 44 games played against them for the Nationals.

With the Nationals falling out of playoff contention, could infielder Daniel Murphy be a fit for the Yankees? ESPN's Buster Olney suggested early Thursday that Murphy could be a good fit for AL teams in need of a DH and a fit at first base for the Yanks.

The 33-year-old Murphy is hitting .310/.354/.466 with six homers and nine doubles in 52 games with the Nats this season after missing the first few months while recovering from knee surgery.

Chris Carelli, SNY.TV Facebook | Twitter | About Me | ArchivesAssuming Murphy could get to the Yankees' waiver position, making a move for him would make a lot of sense for New York. This isn't about ragging on Greg Bird or suggesting he has no future with the Yankees as much as it has to do with the first baseman's season-long struggles. When excitement forms over very scattered hard-hit balls and excuses abound for the lack of actual results (90 OPS+ over 256 plate appearances coming into today), then a playoff club has to ask the question, "Can we get better in this spot?"

Thank you, Mets, for a wild season. In spring training, settling for a wild card loss would have been a major disappointment. However, at 60-62 on Aug. 19, with 70 percent of the Opening Day lineup on the disabled list, simply getting to the wild card seemed like an unrealistic goal. Nevertheless, the Mets attained it. It was an amazing run and I'm glad I got to experience watching it.

New York Mets LHP Jerry Blevins struck out Daniel Murphy with the game-tying run on first base to seal the Mets' 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday at Nationals Park.

After Jeurys Familia blew the save in the bottom of the ninth inning, manager Terry Collins brought in Fernando Salas for the save. Salas retired the first two batters before allowing a Jayson Werth single, and Collins brought in Blevins for the lefty-lefty matchup.

Murphy, who leads the majors in batting average, was hitting over .400 against the Mets this year. He found himself down in the count 0-2 before working it full.

The Nationals and Mets set a Citi Field record Thursday night as the teams combined for eight home runs in one game.

Naionals 2B Daniel Murphy's homer off Antonio Bastardo in the seventh was the record-setter. Murphy has hit five of his 15 home runs this season against the Mets.

Jose Reyes, Asdrubal Cabrera, Travis d'Arnaud and Wilmer Flores homered for the Mets, who have 22 home runs so far this month after hitting just 25 in June. Flores, who entered the game on a double-switch, hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to give the Mets the lead.

Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon and Clint Robinson also homered for Washington.

Nationals 2B Daniel Murphy homered twice, tormenting his former team yet again...

Murphy homered off Logan Verrett (3-5) in the second for a 1-0 lead and golfed a two-run drive in the eighth against reliever Sean Gilmartin. The second baseman matched his career high with 14 homers as Washington won its fourth in a row.

"He's doing the damage against everybody," Terry Collins said. "We've just got to make better pitches. You can't miss on the inner half of the plate to Dan Murphy right now."

Second baseman Daniel Murphy is excited to join the Nationals in the offseason after spending seven years with the Mets.

"I know this red feels pretty good," Murphy told reporters at spring training. "I like that part of it."

Murphy, 30, signed a three-year, $37.5 million contract with Washington, leaving the Mets after his torrid postseason led them to the World Series. In the regular season, Murphy hit .281 with 14 home runs and 73 RBIs. But in the playoffs, Murphy homered in seven straight games, including all NLCS games during the four-game sweep of the Cubs.

According to Puma, it wasn't until the Mets acquired 2B Neil Walker that Murphy realized he should be more aggressive pursuing other options for 2016.

After their trade for Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips fell through, the Washington Nationals are moving on and looking for another middle infielder, according to FoxSports' Ken Rosenthal (Dec. 19).

The Nationals and Reds had agreed to a trade that would send Phillips, who hit .294 with 12 home runs and 70 RBIs last season, last Thursday, however failed to get Phillips to waive his no-trade clause with an incentive (Dec. 19).

Now, the Nationals could look at Howie Kendrick or Daniel Murphy as a middle infielder, though Rosenthal reported that Murphy is not a high-priority target for the Nationals (Dec. 19). Washington could also trade for a second baseman.

Murphy, who hit .281 with 14 home runs and 73 RBIs for the Mets last season, struggled against the Nationals, hitting .171 with one home run and seven RBIs. Against the other three teams in the NL East, he hit .294.

Mets assistant GM John Ricco spoke with the media on Tuesday night at the Winter Meetings in Nashville. Here's what we learned...

  • The Mets weren't surprised about losing out to the Cubs for free-agent IF/OF Ben Zobrist, who reached out to Ricco on Tuesday to advise him that he was signing elsewhere.
  • Ricco doesn't believe Zobrist signed with the Cubs because of money. Rather, he feels the location and his history with Joe Maddon were major factors.
  • With Zobrist signing with the Cubs, the Mets have a plan that Sandy Alderson put in place that could include trades and/or signings.
  • The resources that were allocated for Zobrist can be allocated elsewhere.
  • The Mets have been in contact with free-agent IF Daniel Murphy's agents and will see where it goes.

Daniel Murphy has declined the one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer from the Mets, according to Adam Rubin and Marc Carig (Nov. 13 & Nov. 13).

The Mets can still negotiate with him and try to sign him to a new contract, but the decision to extend a qualifying offer will bring back a compensatory draft pick to the Mets if Murphy ends up signing with a new team.

Murphy earned $8 million this past season, which was his final year of salary arbitration. He is expected to be offered three- to four-year deals, worth around $12-15 million a season (Nov. 12, 2015).

Daniel Murphy's error paved way for the Royals to score three runs in the eighth inning as the Mets lost Game 4 of the World Series, 5-3, falling in a three-games-to-one hole.
