According to Da'Rel Scott's agent, the Giant RB will miss the next few weeks with a hamstring strain.

From Rotoworld:?Scott strained his right hamstring late in Thursday night's loss to the Bears. With David Wilson's (neck) status for Week 7 also in question, Brandon Jacobs and Michael Cox are the only healthy running backs on the roster.

This leaves the Giants with just two healthy RBs - Brandon Jacobs and Michael Cox - for the next few weeks. David Wilson (neck) is having tests conducted this coming week to determine next steps with his injury. Andre Brown is still on IR and is not eligible to return until after the team's eighth game.

Da'Rel Scott was on the bubble for a roster spot two weeks ago. Then something happened, as it always does this time of year. Andre Brown, the Giants' No. 2 Back, broke his leg - again. Scott was suddenly spared a visit from the notorious "Turk." Given his past status with the team, he still had no idea what to expect.

He had lingered on the Giants' bench, either injured or buried behind the likes of Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs, DJ Ware, Andre Brown and David Wilson.

It appears the Giants' pursuit of Tim Hightower is ongoing. And now another team has entered the race.

Both the Redskins and the Giants have inquired about signing Hightower this off-season, according to the Washington Post.

The last team to employ the running back was Washington -- back during the 2012 pre-season -- while New York has been the primary team linked to him this off-season.

Former Cardinals and Redskins running back Tim Hightower is visiting with the Giants today, according to reports.

The free agent would only add depth to the Giants at the running back position, as the team can rest surely on the legs of sophomore David Wilson and his capable backup, Andre Brown.

Rounding out the depth chart is former Terp Da'Rel Scott and Ryan Torain. The Giants also added Michael Cox out of Massachusetts in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, then signed Jeremy Wright out of Louisville in the subsequent days.

A tradition like none other: the Giants turning heads with their draft class.

The Giants had seven picks in this weekend's draft, adding depth to a number of key positions, including offensive and defensive line, running back and the secondary. Of course, a position that remained untouched was linebacker.

Addressing the media at the NFL Scouting Combine this afternoon, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin spoke to a number of questions surrounding the team this off-season.

One of the biggest surprises at the beginning of the off-season was the release of veteran running back Ahmad Bradshaw.

It was assumed by many that former first-rounder David Wilson, who impressed in Bradshaw's absence, would inherit the role of lead back. But Coughlin expects both Andre Brown and Da'Rel Scott -- a former Terp -- to compete for the job.

The Giants, for better or worse, had a very Giants-like draft. Jerry Reese and the rest of the draft-day decision makers selected seven players befitting of the team-first, no-nonsense Big Blue mold. Some of these players will be asked to fill immediate needs, make meaningful plays in meaningful game situations right away, while others can and will be excused should they not impact the Giants? season in any sort of visible, tangible way this season.

With the 77th installment of the NFL draft now officially in the books, seven new faces?excluding UDFA?s?join the defending Super Bowl champs hoping to accomplish the same feat in 2012. While all of the Giants? draft picks can?t be pegged as surefire starters in the fall, they are sure to have an impact over the next five months as roster sizes are cut from 90 to 53.

Here?s how the newest class of rookies fit in:

I know everyone wants a RB in this draft, but I can tell you one person (besides myself) that doesn't think the Giants need one. That person is Giants' second-year RB Da'Rel Scott.

While it is not known whether Scott has leapfrogged Danny Ware on the Giants' depth chart, he sure appears more ready this year.

Earlier this spring, head coach Tom Coughlin intimated that Scott would see more action in the offense. Considering his breakaway speed, that should excite Giant fans everywhere.

In the seven years since the Giants traded their first-round pick to San Diego in the wow-that-worked-out-pretty-well Eli Manning deal, they've drafted a defensive player with their first pick every year except 2009, when they took Hakeem Nicks. None of those draft choices can be qualified as busts, as Corey Webster (2005), Mathias Kiwanuka (2006), Aaron Ross (2007), Kenny Phillips (2008), Nicks (2009), Jason Pierre-Paul (2010), and Prince Amukamara (2011) have all been contributors on at least one of Big Blue?s two 21st century SuperBowl title teams. (Note: Webster was technically a second round pick, but the Giants? first pick of the 2005 draft nonetheless.)

Although defense has been the norm in recent years, predicting what the Giants will do with this year?s first-round pick is no easy task. Jerry Reese tends to stray away from addressing immediate needs early on in the draft. He is a strict believer in the ?best player available philosophy?, preferring to stock talented players for the future--even if those players are not ready to make an impact right away.

The Giants are known for drafting or signing players, then holding them back until they are ready to use them. This year, the team's two biggest breakout stars - DE Jason Pierre-Paul and Victor Cruz - were second-year players who were only allowed to put their toes in the water as rookies.

JPP was drafted in the middle of the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft while Cruz was signed after the draft as a UDFA. Both showed great promise as rookies, but JPP was forced to wait his turn and hone his trade while Cruz hurt his hamstring and then found himself on IR, a victim of roster roulette.

For those of you who want to see Da'Rel Scott in at RB...it's coming..

From Giants SNY insider Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger:

The Giants will head to San Francisco to face the league?s best run defense with Brandon Jacobs and D.J. Ware leading the way. Rookie Da?Rel Scott could see a few reps after getting one carry for 5 yards and a first down against New England.

Devin Thomas has told the NY Daily News that he is no longer the Giants' kickoff returner. He will likely be replaced by running backs Da'Rel Scott and D.J. Ware.

Thomas has shown promise as a return man (especially during his sophomore season at Michigan State), and has excelled on special teams in the past, but has failed to break off a long return recently, and has muffed a couple kickoffs to boot.

?I can be a stud back there,? Thomas said. ?But I?m a dud if I?m out there muffing returns.?
Though the 24-year old has physical talent (he is a former 2nd round pick), he is at the bottom of the depth chart among wide receivers, and is in trouble of being inactive or even losing his roster spot if he does not regain his kickoff duties.

Last week, Giants' rookie RB Da'Rel Scott finally got to handle the ball. It was a pass play that only went for four yards, but it was a start....

from Mike Vorkunov of The Star-Ledger:

With his ability to catch the ball, he may eventually make for a good third down back. In the Buffalo Bills game, they wanted to see what he could do.

When you rank 31st in the league in rushing, you search high and low for answers. If you hear that a hot dog vendor can possibly help you, you go up in the stands and grab him.

This is the point the Giants are at right now. Their running game cannot get much worse. At 3.2 yards per carry, they aren't scaring anyone. Throw in Brandon Jacobs' swollen knee and the injuries on the offensive line and they are dead in the water.

Ahmad Bradshaw is one of the league's best backs, but without support he has little chance to get into any kind of rhythm. They need a player that makes defenders miss.

This is no breaking newsflash.

The Giants ineffectiveness to run the ball has severely hampered their ability to dictate tempo in games and it has to change.

Brandon Jacobs? injury has only heightened the shortcomings of the running game. His status for Sunday is very much in doubt.

Over all it won't matter to Eli who gets cuts today because the offense is pretty much set.? Yes, Manning is hoping for a free agent Tight End to find his way to the East Rutherford and if he cuts down his interceptions 2011 can be a playoff type of year.? His arsenal of weapons is slightly different from last year but still explosive.

Ranking Eli's best weapons:

1. WR - Hakeem Nicks - The 2009 1st round draft pick has come as advertised.? One could say he has been sniffing around pro bowl status during his two years in the NFL.? Nicks is 6' 1" and 215 lbs and his game is very similar to Michael Irvin the former Dallas Cowboy and now Hall of Fame inductee.

The Giants 2011 draft class will start the season with an incomplete. The injuries to their first two selections (CB Prince Amukamara and DT Marvin Austin) will delay their grade until next year at the soonest. But that does not mean this class won't turn out to be a success before those two return.

The Giants have been known to find gems in the middle and late rounds. This year, they may have hit the jackpot. ?Yesterday morning, I wrote the following and was mocked by many a reader:

S Tyler Sash is in, as are LB Jacquian Williams and RB Da?Rel Scott. The Giants would be ill advised to cut any of them. They could ? COULD - just be looking at their new Jason Sehorn, Jesse Armstead and David Meggett in those three.
A little overzealous on my part. I'll admit. But if you watched last night's game, who were the Giants' stars....?

What does a 97 yard touchdown run get you?? If you?re on the Giants, it gets you a spot on the bench, and perhaps, a ticket out of town.? Da?Rel Scott, who received only one carry last week against the Bears and took it to the house, did not get a chance to build on his exciting run against the Jets.? Even with Ahmad Bradshaw being limited and Brandon Jacobs getting ejected, Scott did not see the field once.

It?s possible that Scott will get an extended look on Thursday against the Patriots, as Coughlin could rest most of the starters instead of play them on two days rest (ridiculous...I can't even play frisbee golf on two days rest). ?Regardless, it was disappointing that Scott didn't have a chance to run behind the first (or second) team offensive line.

Scott was drafted because he has something the Giants have lacked from the running back position for years: true breakaway speed. ?He has already proven that he?s a legitimate burner in pads, he just needs to stay healthy and cut down on his fumbles (a fixable problem).? The biggest remaining question for him, and every rookie, is how his talents will translate to NFL game speed.? Well, there?s no way to find out if he doesn?t actually get a chance to play in real live games.

Ahmad Bradshaw will likely not play in tomorrow's pre-season battle versus the Jets, due to lingering soreness in his back.?Bradshaw's absence will result in more carries for the handful of running backs looking to make the roster. ?DJ Ware, Andre Brown, Da'Rel Scott and Charles Scott are likely battling for one, maybe two roster spots.

Ware scored on a short touchdown run against the Bears, but has not shown much otherwise. He has been around for a few years, and although he has had his moments, he's never capitalized on the chances he has been given. ?Brown has impressed coaches with his renewed quickness in camp, but has not shown that explosiveness yet in the pre-season games.

Da'Rel Scott has not been given many chances in the first two games, leading me to believe that he entered week two of the pre-season behind Ware and Brown on the depth chart. After his 97-yard touchdown run on Monday night, I expect to see him get a much longer look the rest of the pre-season. He could benefit the most from Bradshaw's absence.

In 2010 The New York Giants went 10 & 6 and missed the playoffs for the second year in a row.?? They were embarrassed at home against the Tennessee Titans, lost for the fifth straight time against a not as talented Philadelphia Eagle squad, only to suffer the largest collapse in team history against the same team 4 weeks later.

The once mighty NY Giants defense allowed 347 points ranking them 17th in this category.? The fans waited and held their breath for 137 plus days for their beloved New York Giants to take the field after the lock out.

The Giants have signed their seventh round pick, running back Da'Rel Scott, the first player signed from their 2011 draft class. Scott tweeted "off to work. G-men. Here I come!!!" and Mike Garafolo adds that the reason for his tweet is that a deal has been "pretty much agreed to."

Always good to get that first draft pick signing out of the way, and it's especially important to get everyone signed as early as possible this season, considering the amount of time lost.

Garafolo also adds that sixth round safety Tyler Sash is also close to signing a deal, and that the Giants signed fullback Keith Payne from Virginia. He will join fellow undrafted fullback Henry Hynoski out of Pittsburgh.

You may be asking yourself who is Da'Rel Scott??And why should I care?

Well, there is a myth that great running backs can be found in the later rounds and while there has been some great backs drafted in rounds four through seven...I wouldn't say that drafting a back in the later rounds has proven reliable.? Especially when you look at multi-year starting running backs in the NFL over the last 10 years

Yes, there has been some great backs like Terrell Davis, Michael Turner, Chester Taylor, Peyton Hillis, Leon Washington, Justin Forsett and Marion Barber all drafted in later rounds.? The New York Giants even made a little back from Marshall named Ahmad Bradshaw a household name.

- The first thing you notice about this draft is speed.? The Giants lacked great team speed last season, and Jerry Reese clearly wanted to improve on that.? First round pick Prince CB Amukamara has solid, but not elite speed.? The same cannot be said for third round pick WR Jerrel Jurnigan and seventh round pick RB Da?Rel Scott, who are possibly the fastest players at their position in this draft.? Jurnigan should immediately be in the mix as the team?s return man, an area the team struggled with last season.? Scott has experience as a returner as well, but I doubt we?ll see him returning too many kicks with Jurnigan and a healthy Domenik Hixon.

- Another area that Reese improved was special teams.? Jurnigan aside, a number of the other draftees should help out on kick coverage.? Tyler Sash, Greg Jones and Jacquain Williams should all be special teams contributors.

- ?Prince Amukamara? was not the most interesting name to join New York sports on Thursday; that honor goes to ?God?s Gift Achiuwa,? who committed to St. John?s basketball.

The Giants know Brandon Jacobs won't be around forever and Ahmad Bradshaw might get the gate if he can't overcome his propensity for fumbling. ?

Also, those two were always better when they had a third player rotating with them in the Giants' backfield, a dynamic that the Giants have not been able to be recapture since Derrick Ward left the club several years ago.

With their final pick, the Giants have selected Maryland RB Da'Rel Scott in the seventh round.

Dreams can be fun.?Inception showed us this.

I have decided to take my first crack at a ?dream draft? for the Giants 2011 draft; not necessarily the perfect draft, but a mock draft created only with players I would like to see the Giants draft.? Obviously, all of these players will not be available for the Giants at the time of their projected selection, but each pick is within the realm of possibility, if not totally realistic.

Keep in mind that the Giants do not have a 5th round pick (traded for Sage Rosenfels), but have three 6th round picks (two compensatory picks).
