EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Giants found the end zone for the first time this preseason, but that doesn't change the story of who they still are. They are exactly what they were at the end of last season:

A team with a dominant defense and an offense with serious flaws.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Head coach Ben McAdoo said he plans to treat the Giants' preseason opener the same way he treated last year's. That means there'll likely be no Eli Manning, no Odell Beckham Jr., no Jason Pierre-Paul, no Landon Collins or many other starters.

And the starters that do actually play probably won't play much at all.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Giants open the preseason on Friday night, just two weeks after they opened camp. And with a veteran team with few training camp battles, very little has changed.

In those few battles, though, some very clear lines have been drawn. The action in the preseason games will determine everything of course, but as the games begin, here's a look at where the action stands in the five big battles I identified (hand handicapped) before camp began:

The Giants' confidence heading into this season comes largely from the fact that they return almost every key player from an 11-5 season. That means, as players report to camp on Thursday, very few positions in the lineup are up for grabs.

There are some, though, and the battles for those spots could be fierce, even if they're not very high-profile. Here's a quick look at the five biggest battles that will take place during camp...

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Giants began the offseason with a heartbreaking playoff loss that left them with mixed feelings. They were crushed that they blew an 11-5 season and a terrific opportunity. But they were hopeful that they were on the verge of being a true contender again.

Everything they did this offseason was with that in mind. There's still a lot of work to be done when training camp opens on July 27, of course, and a lot can change between now and Opening Day on Sept. 10. But for now, here are five things we've learned about these Giants as their "offseason" officially comes to an end:

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY:

The Giants could have somewhere near $40 million in salary cap space to play with this offseason if the cap rises all the way to $168 million, as some in the NFL project. They might even end up with more, depending on what contracts they restructure and which players they decide to cut.

And while that may not be enough to turn them into big spenders in free agency the way they were a year ago, it certainly is enough for them to re-sign some of their own unrestricted free agents. They have 17 UFAs to deal with, and several other free agents who are restricted. And a few of them could demand and command big money from someone -- particularly the two free agents on the Giants' defensive line.

The Giants are on a roll, having won five straight games to move to 7-3 on the season -- the third best record in the NFC. They are handling adversity, winning tight games, and have put themselves in position for their first playoff berth since 2011.

But is it all really as good as it seems?

Maybe it is, but don't forget that the Giants' winning streak has come against teams with a combined 19-30-1 record -- and none better than 5-5. Three of those games were at home. One was in a neutral site. And despite those advantages they've still only won those five games by a combined 23 points.

Giants S Darian Thompson aggravated his foot injury during practice Wednesday and will travel to Charlotte to have the injury reevaluated by foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, reports SNY.tv's Ralph Vacchiano.

There is concern Thompson may need surgery, which would end his season.

He had been expected to return Sunday against the Eagles after using the bye week to continue his rehab.

The Giants' defense has been highlighted by the play of second-year safety Landon Collins, who, after a trying rookie season, has become a Pro Bowl talent.Collins leads the Giants in tackles and is sixth overall in tackles in the NFL with 57. He is the leading tackler among all safeties this season. He also has two sacks and two interceptions. One of those interceptions against the Rams in London, was retuned spectacularly for a touchdown and could be up for the play of the year award."Still hearing about it. I'm ready to continue to keep making more plays," Collins said on Monday. "That's not just one thing I could do, one great thing I could do. I can do a lot more."

The Giants gained ground in the NFC East this weekend simply by standing still. They entered their bye week at 4-3 and in last place in the division. After Sunday's action, they find themselves heading into Week 9 in second place. The Washington Redskins (4-3-1) are in last now after tying the Cincinnati Bengals, 27-27, in London. The Philadelphia Eagles (4-3) fell to the division-leading Dallas Cowboys (6-1), 29-23, on Sunday Night Football. The Giants hold the tiebreaker over Philadelphia by virtue of division record, 1-1 vs. 0-2, so the Giants are in second place, two games behind Dallas. The Giants defeated the Cowboys in Week 1, so the lead is basically a game and a half.

The Giants are 4-3 and have won two straight games heading into their bye week, which would seem to put them in a very good position for a "second half" run.So why is it that everyone feels so badly about them?Oh, right. They're winning pretty ugly. And their vaunted offense gained a pretty pathetic 232 yards against the Rams on Sunday in London. And they still can't run the ball. And Odell Beckham wasn't very effective. And everyone is down on Ben McAdoo's play-calling. And …Well, you get the idea. All the bad, and maybe some of the good, is covered here in my takeaways from … wait, let me check … yeah, it's true, it was a Giants win.

Vacc's 3 Keys: Ravens-Giants 00:03:21
SNY NFL Insider Ralph Vacchiano identifies 3 keys for the Giants for their matchup against the Ravens on Sunday.

THE GAME: The Baltimore Ravens (3-2) at the Giants (2-3) at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J. on Sunday, Oct. 16, 1 p.m. ET.THE WEATHER: It's supposed to be so nice that I'm almost sad that the press box is indoors. The temperature is supposed to hover around 70 with plenty of sun, no rain and only the usual light Meadowlands winds.WHAT IT MEANS: If you step back and look at the big picture, the back-to-back losses in Minnesota and Green Bay aren't a huge deal. Those are tough places to win under any circumstances. They just look worse in consecutive weeks, coming off a terrible loss to the Redskins. This, though, is a perfect spot for the Giants to get back on track, at home against a mediocre team with plenty of its own issues. We're still a long ways from must-win territory, but these are the types of games teams are supposed to win if they really want to be considered contenders.PLAYER TO WATCH: WR Victor Cruz. The zero catches from Sunday night is alarming enough, but I can't really get over the two passes thrown his direction. The Giants did a decent job of trying to get the ball to Odell Beckham Jr. (12 targets) and Sterling Shepard (seven), but the beauty of their passing attack is that they're supposed to be three-deep at receiver. No, Cruz wasn't open a ton, but he was open more than twice and they've got to get more creative about finding ways to get the ball in his hands. He's taking most of his snaps on the outside now. No, he's not the same player he was pre-injury, but he still looks pretty good and he might be able to do some damage out of the slot. If the Giants can get him going it's only going to make things easier on Shepard and on Beckham, who has been absolutely swarmed by defenses the last few weeks. So they should try to get the ball to Cruz early. And I think they will.

This was going to be a tough spot for the Giants right from the start. Going on the road to pick up the pieces from their sloppy loss to the Redskins was going to be hard enough. Giants head coach Ben McAdoo discusses Big Blue's loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Minnesota's defense denied Odell Beckham Jr. all night and forced two turnovers that led to 10 points, and the Vikings mystified Eli Manning yet again during a 24-10 victory Monday over the New York Giants.

Sam Bradford threw a touchdown pass to tight end Kyle Rudolph for the third straight game and kept his turnover-free streak intact, helping the Vikings (4-0) lead from start to finish after falling behind in each of their first three wins.

Beckham, who has yet to score this season, was smothered by cornerback Xavier Rhodes and had 23 yards on three catches. Victor Cruz and Sterling Shepard were quiet, too, and Manning was erratic as ever while finishing 25 for 45 for just 261 yards. Rhodes picked him off in the third quarter, the 15th interception for Manning in eight career starts against the Vikings. He's 2-6 with only five touchdown passes.

The New York Giants needed to come out in 2016 healthy and hearty, but instead may be poised for another season besieged by key injuries. It may be too soon to tell, but at this rate, they could be headed for another year at the top of the "adjusted games lost" column.

New York led the NFL in adjusted games lost, a metric to evaluate how teams were affected by injuries, for the third straight season in 2015, according to Football Outsiders.

Odell Beckham, Jr. was unstoppable on the field on Sunday. Off the field, he was a little out of control.

And don't think Giants head coach Ben McAdoo didn't notice. In fact, he admitted that his star receiver needs to rein in his sideline antics, one day after Beckham had another emotional outburst during the Giants' 29-27 loss to the Redskins. Late in the game, cameras caught a furious Beckham slamming his helmet into the kicking net, which fell over and hit him square in the face.

The Giants will likely be without rookie safety Darian Thompson for another week at least, but doctors believe his sprained foot is not a long-term injury, according to a source.

Thompson suffered a sprained left foot in the Giants' win over the Saints a week ago and did not play in the Giants' 29-27 loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday. He was reexamined by doctors over the weekend and the results were "good," a source told SNY. He is expected to "be back soon."

The Giants entered the season with plenty of worries about their situation at right tackle. Now they'll head into their game on Sunday against the Redskins worrying even more.

Marshall Newhouse, the starter at right tackle, was officially declared "out" of the Redskins game. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Rookie safety Darian Thompson will not play Sunday in the Giants' game against the Washington Redskins due to a sprained foot, and there is some concern he could miss more than that.

Darian Thompson jammed his shoulder in the preseason and will likely miss the season opener this Sunday in Dallas. Enter Nat Berhe, who has been waiting for his moment the past three summers.

The Giants drafted Berhe out of San Diego State in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft with the expectation that he would become a staple in their fractured secondary. Behre was hailed as a hard worker who made up for his lack of size with guile and grit. Berhe's pre-draft measurables were 5'10", 193 pounds.

There is so much uncertainty around the Giants, and so many reasons to worry. There's the recent history of three straight losing seasons and no playoffs since 2011, a new coach and a whole bunch of new (and expensive) players. They'll be without their kicker in Week 1. No one is sure what to expect of Victor Cruz. And they've had such a terrible history of injuries the last few years.

Yeah, despite all that the Giants have high hopes heading into the 2016 season. But they had those in each of the last four years, too. And they know better than anyone that things can quickly change.

The 53-man roster is set (for now), and the New York Giants believe they will be back on the road to success after missing the postseason the past four years. Their roster has been upgraded in many key areas, with the exception of the offensive line and a blocking tight end.

But who will be the stars and the face of this club in 2016? It's clear QB Eli Manning and WR Odell Beckham Jr. will be among the top players in the league at their positions, but who else will garner Pro Bowl interest this year?

On offense, no one can possibly expect any of the linemen to get any type of recognition. Center Weston Richburg is considered one of the best players at his position, but the negative advance reviews on the Giants' offensive line is going to hurt his chances. The rest of the group has either struggled or was injured this summer, so the offense would have to play lights out for them to get any consideration.

Giants head coach Ben McAdoo spoke with the media on Friday. Here's what we learned...

  • Wide receivers, running backs, and linebackers will be the toughest calls when it comes to trimming the roster to 53 by Saturday.
  • The team feels comfortable with the body of work on injured FB/TE Will Johnson, but there's no new information on his injury.
  • S Darian Thompson might be back in a limited role next week.
  • TE Larry Donnell's wrist is okay.
  • McAdoo doesn't believe the Giants need a traditional fullback on the roster.

Giants third round draft pick Darian Thompson, a safety out of Boise State, has done everything and more this summer to convince the team that he is their free safety of the future. But with Thompson sidelined this week, and possibly beyond, with a shoulder ailment the Giants will be relying on the "next man up" to fill the role. Who that "next man up" is right now is unknown. It could be any number of players such as the oft-injured Nat Behre and Cooper Taylor to UDFA Andrew Adams and veteran CB Leon Hall.

On Friday, safeties coach David Merritt was asked what the plan at free safety is with Thompson out.

Rookie safety Darian Thompson suffered what a source said was a "bruised" shoulder on Saturday in Buffalo that may be bad enough to keep him out of this Saturday's game against the Jets.

The Giants revealed the injury on Monday, telling reporters that Thompson is "week to week". That was alarming considering there are only three weeks left until the opener and Thompson, a third-round pick, has emerged as a near lock to win one of the starting safety jobs.

But a source insisted it might not be that bad, though a shoulder bruise could be painful and restricting enough to keep him out at least through the weekend. It was unknown how extensive the bruise was. The Giants did not reveal any specifics of the injury and coach Ben McAdoo was not available to speak to the media on Monday.

Ben McAdoo, the Giants' first year head coach is running training camp his way this summer and the players seem to like many of the changes he's made from the Tom Coughlin era.

One thing (besides the clocks) that hasn't changed is the succinct, direct, honest answers to the media's questions.

"Training camp never goes smooth," McAdoo said when asked if his first camp was going smooth. "You're probably not doing it right if it does. There's always some things you have to adjust and improvise. You really just roll with the punches after that."

New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo has not announced who will handle the offensive playcalling this season, and as the first preseason game approaches, he isn't any closer to doing so.

He told reporters he knew who would be calling the plays but would not divulge who that person was. It could be him or offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan, the only two logical choices on the staff, and both of them have just four years of NFL playcalling experience between them. The only other coach on the staff with pro-level experience as a playcaller is quarterbacks coach Frank Cignetti Jr., who was the Rams' offensive coordinator last season.

"We'll have a play caller on Friday and we'll evaluate it afterwards," McAdoo said.

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ -- Little by little, Ben McAdoo's first depth chart is shaping up and the starters for the preseason opener this Friday against Miami are becoming clear. The Giants coach won't confirm much, of course, and a lot could change when the preseason games actually begin. But a lot of the same players are either working with the first team or part of a rotation.

That isn't an accident at this stage of training camp, or just part of some experiment. By now, McAdoo has the players in the places he wants them.

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ -- One of the most interesting position battles at Giants training camp is starting to look like it's over before it ever really began.

Rookie Darian Thompson has emerged as the clear leader in the battle for the starting free safety job this summer - so much so that even coach Ben McAdoo acknowledged on Monday that the 22-year-old is now the favorite to win the job. Thompson has been getting virtually all of the first-team reps next to Landon Collins in recent practices, along with plenty of second-team reps, too.
