Former New York Jets cornerback Darrin Walls signed with the Detroit Lions on Tuesday, the Lions announced.

Walls, 27, joined the Jets in 2012 and played in 49 games over the past four seasons. Last year, he recorded 10 combined tackles and three passes defensed in 13 games.

He was an undrafted rookie in 2011 and played five games with the Atlanta Falcons in 2011 before coming to New York in 2012.

Much was made over the Patriots' decision to kick off in overtime, but I wonder if their thinking was that if they could force a Jets' punt, there was a decent chance that Ryan Quigley would shank it, setting them up with excellent field position needing just three points to win.

In the end, Quigley didn't need to punt as the Jets drove down and scored the game-winning touchdown. That might be just as well because his last punt in regulation was a poor one, rolling into the end zone for a touchback with no return man back and a chance to pin New England close to their goal line. Again, this had no impact anyway as New England still opted to take a knee.

Quigley did put two punts down to about the 10-yard line earlier on in the game and did bomb a punt with a 53-yard net in the fourth quarter. One of his other punts had just a 33-yard net, though.

During the week, Jets special teams coordinator Bobby April vowed that there would be changes on the unit. Whatever the changes were, they seemed to work. What were the changes, though? It's not immediately apparent.

There were no lineup changes other than the fact that Kenbrell Thompkins was deactivated for Darrelle Revis. And it's not like Thompkins was involved in any of the breakdowns last week. I didn't see any other obvious personnel changes, so maybe they did something subtle with their scheme.

The performance on the kickoff coverage unit stood out. On seven kickoffs, Randy Bullock had four touchbacks and the Jets stopped the Titans inside the 20 on the other three. On those plays, Quincy Enunwa in particular was doing an excellent job of getting downfield.

Jets fans may be worried about the team's cornerback situation, but Rex Ryan isn't. At least that's what he told reporters Friday, two days before the season opener against Oakland at MetLife Stadium.

Why is he so confident? "Just watch them practice. And in the games, I think we haven?t been perfect there, but guys are improving. I think Darrin Walls is a much better player now than he was last year (as a backup). I don?t think it?s even close. . . And in the (preseason) games, I think we haven?t been perfect there, but guys are improving."
