After the Jets were eliminated from playoff contention with Sunday's 31-19 loss to the New Orleans Saints, several players said they believe head coach Todd Bowles should return next season.

"He does a good job as a head coach," veteran running back Matt Forte said, according to Newsday's Calvin Watkins. "People are going to criticize you. If you're 9-4 or 10-3 then you would be the greatest thing since slice bread. But [since] we're mathematically out of the playoffs and lost a couple of games in a row, then everything is worse."

New York has lost seven of its last nine games since a 3-2 start, however the fact the Jets have five wins this season is a sign they have already exceeded expectations given many analysts predicted New York would win a maximum of four games or have a historically bad season.

"He's the Jets' head coach," rookie safety Jamal Adams told Watkins. "He's my head coach and he's the team head coach. There shouldn't be any discussion who is going to be the head coach. It should be Todd Bowles. There shouldn't be any indecision about how our coach is coaching us. We got to finish ballgames."

Instead of sulking over his suspension last week, Jets LB Darron Lee used his time to view the game from a new perspective.

Lee was suspended by head coach Todd Bowles after Lee arrived late to the team's walk-through last Saturday. The second-year pro hadn't missed a practice before the punishment, but either way, he has learned from his first suspension of his career.

"Yeah, we won, man," Lee told NJ.com's Darryl Slater. "There ain't nothing to be down about. I mean, who cares? This ain't about me. It's about the team."

The Jets have largely avoided the locker room problems that plagued the team last season, but some of them still apparently have a problem with showing up on time.

Jets linebacker Darron Lee was inactive on Sunday because he showed up late to a team practice, and defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson was benched for a quarter for showing up late for a meeting, a team source confirmed. Both are automatic punishments on head coach Todd Bowles' list of team rules.

Jets linebackers Jordan Jenkins and Darron Lee are among the young Jets defenders getting recognition this season for stellar play.

Rookies Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye may get more of a spotlight than Lee and Jenkins, but on Thursday night against the Bills, it was the linebackers who put on a show. Jenkins finished with two sacks and a forced fumble while Lee had a sack and eight tackles with three coming for a loss.

Jenkins, who came out of Georgia last season, finally had the breakout night he was looking for as he not only recorded his first sack of the season, but two with a strip sack that sealed the game late in the fourth quarter. The 23-year-old was part of the reason why many should be scared of the Jets' defense going forward.

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter: The Jets once again gave a good account of themselves in this game, but they had too many defensive penalties and the offense dried up in the fourth quarter, enabling Miami's come-from-behind win. Despite knocking Jay Cutler out of the game, the Jets were unable to protect a 28-14 lead, the first time since 1999 they've had a two score lead in the fourth quarter and not won. Let's start this week by breaking down the performances on the defensive side of the ball:

Defensive Line

Once again, the defensive line didn't generate any sacks, but this was an extremely encouraging performance. Leonard Williams and Muhammad Wilkerson combined for five quarterback hits, and each stuffed a couple of runs as the Jets held Miami to just 53 yards on 25 carries. Williams almost picked up his first sack on a blitz from middle linebacker that led to Jamal Adams recording the sack cleaning up, while Wilkerson intercepted a tipped pass to set up a touchdown. Moreover, they both looked more powerful and explosive than they have in recent weeks. Hopefully this is a sign that they are getting closer to 100 percent...

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Jets sometimes seem like they've cornered the market on finding interesting new ways to lose. Five years ago, it was the infamous "Butt fumble." This time, it was a fumble that maybe, probably, never was.

But the differences between those two plays are as stark as the differences between those two teams. The "Butt fumble" was an embarrassment on Thanksgiving 2012 that turned Mark Sanchez and the Jets into a national joke. The fumble by Austin Seferian-Jenkins on Sunday -- the "What fumble," as some have named it -- wasn't funny to anyone.

For the second time in three weeks, Jets linebacker Darron Lee has been fined by the NFL for unnecessary roughness - this time $18,231 for his hit on Miami quarterback Jay Cutler last Sunday afternoon.

Lee's infraction came with 10:12 left in the Jets' 20-6 win over the Dolphins at the Meadowlands. After the Jets defense flushed Cutler out of the pocket, he scrambled to his right and threw the ball downfield. As he threw, Lee was still about four yards away from the quarterback, but he still kept coming and threw his shoulder into Cutler anyway, drawing a flag.

The Jets' season got to an inauspicious start with a 21-12 loss on the road in Buffalo. With his second regular season approaching, linebacker Darron Lee is looking to step up for the Jets in 2017.

Taken 20th overall last year out of Ohio State, Lee recorded 45 tackles and one sack in 13 games with New York. As training camp nears the end, Lee has thought about what he wants to improve upon this season.

"I'm looking forward to showing all the hard work I put in in the offseason and turning that into leaps from last year," Lee told reporters Tuesday.

The NFL has cleared Jets players Darron Lee and Leonard Williams of any violations of league rules after an investigation into an incident at a New York music festival in June turned up a lack of evidence.

The incident involved Williams dragging Lee away from what Jets coach Todd Bowles later described as "an argument with his girlfriend" during the Governors Ball on Randalls Island. The argument and the aftermath were caught on video and posted to social media.

The Twitter user who posted the video said the woman was "shaken and in tears" after the incident. The user also described Lee as "aggressive" and claimed the Jets linebacker "started to manhandle" the woman, "grabbed" her, and "started dragging her away."

Upon announcing that the league's investigation was closed, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in an email "Following a review, we concluded there was insufficient evidence to support a finding that there was a violation of the personal conduct policy."

The Jets are banking on their 2016 first-round draft pick, LB Darron Lee, to be a vocal leader on defense this season, per NY Post's Fred Kerber.

David Harris and Darrelle Revis were the Jets' defensive leaders for the past few years. Now, with both being released this offseason, Lee seems to be the next guy up. He is confident in his abilities to lead as he feels more comfortable in the Jets' system.

"Absolutely," Lee said becoming a vocal leader. "Know the playbook pretty much backwards and forwards now. Really comfortable. I feel way comfortable. Unlike last year. Felt lost on some stuff. Now I know it backwards and forwards. Perfectly comfortable now."

Darron Lee had his ups and downs after being the Jets' first round pick last season, but the team seems compelled to proceed with the plan to build around him as one of the cornerstones of the defense. Entering his first season, everyone knew that Lee was a terrific athlete, but he still had to prove he had the instincts to play inside linebacker in a pro-style defense.

According to NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy, the NFL is still reviewing an incident invovling Jets' LB Darron Lee and DE Leonard Williams from early June, reports ESPN's Rich Cimini.

The incident occured at Governors Ball Music Festival on Randalls Island in June where Lee had to be restrained by Williams after getting into an argument with a woman. An eye witness video showed Williams getting in between his teammate, and eventually, carrying him away from the argument.

Jets' head coach Todd Bowles later indentified the woman as Lee's girlfriend, and noted that the team will not be disciplining the linebacker. However, he thinks he needs to take caution in the future.

"You don't want that stuff to happen, obviously," Bowles said earlier on the situation. "With social media going on these days, they've got to take better care of themselves. Darron understands that. I just know, from the past, any time you go to a concert, there's going to be trouble around, just as an ex-player and as a coach. When you go to a concert, a lot of things can happen. You have to be very mindful and very aware of where you are, and your surroundings -- and handle yourself better and keep yourself out of trouble."

The Jets were one of the worst pass-rushing teams in the NFL last year, finishing the season wtih just 27 sacks, and only 5.5 of them coming from the team's outside linebackers.

Todd Bowles brought in former NFL linebacker Kevin Greene as New York's new linebackers coach, and Greene has already expressed optimism towards his young group of players.

"The sky's the limit for all my kids," Greene told Daniel Popper of the Daily News. "I'm teaching my kids technique and fundamentals not based on athletic ability and skill. It's based on physicality. It's based on drive and desire and want-to and being a student of the game. ... All my kids can really be as good they want to be."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - The NFL is investigating a weekend incident that involved Jets linebacker Darron Lee at a New York music festival, to see if he violated the league's personal conduct policy. But if he's disciplined at all, it won't be by Jets coach Todd Bowles.

Bowles said he had a long talk with Lee following the incident on Saturday, and excused it as just "an argument with his girlfriend." It occurred at the Governors Ball on Randalls Island and some of it was caught on a video that posted to social media. The highlight of the video was Lee's teammate, Leonard Williams, dragging him away from the unidentified woman.

The free-agent market has thinned out a bit, but the Jets still have plenty of holes to fill. Yes, they still need a quarterback. But they have many other needs, too.

The good news is they still have a decent amount of salary-cap space and there is still help available. Here's a look at some of the non-quarterbacks still on the market who could be a fit:

CB Morris Claiborne (Cowboys) - The former sixth-overall pick (2012), he was long considered a bust before he began to finally play up to expectations last season - right up until he injured his groin. He's still only 27 and as the Jets begin a youth movement in the secondary it might be worth giving him a chance to prove his start last season wasn't a fluke. They'd need to move fast, though, since word is he could soon end up with the Ravens.

SNY's weekly look at the top players on board for the Jets as they prepare to make the sixth overall pick of the NFL draft on April 27, complete with who's rising and who's falling throughout the process and as the Jets' potential needs change:

1.) CB Marshon Lattimore, Ohio State - The ides of the Jets taking a cornerback sixth overall seemed logical even before Darrelle Revis was charged with four felonies and a misdemeanor after a street fight in Pittsburgh 10 days ago. He probably wasn't coming back anyway, certainly not as a corner, but the incident amplified the need at his position. The combine next week will help solidify Lattimore's status as a Top 10 player. It even could push him out of the Jets' reach and into the Top 5. (Last week: 1)...

Darron Lee, the New York Jets' promising young linebacker and their first-round pick in last year's draft, says he is OK after being attacked in a bar in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday night.

The 22-year-old explained the incident in some detail on Monday in a video posted to his Twitter account, in which he showed off a bruise under his right eye and what he said were "bumps all around my head." He insisted he was attacked without provocation and he had no idea by whom.

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY:

It has been 48 years and two weeks since the Jets shook up the world and changed the NFL with their victory in Super Bowl III, and they have since taken their fans on a long, depressing and at times torturous run. It's been so painful at times that it's easy to forget the Jets went to back-to-back AFC championship games just six years ago.

Of course, since then they've brought the pain: Six straight seasons without a playoff berth, only one season with a winning record, and it was all capped off by a miserable 5-11 season that felt worse since the Jets had so much optimism after going 10-6 in 2015.

We've looked at some of the roster decisions facing the Jets as we head into the offseason over the past few weeks. Readers overwhelmingly voted to keep Eric DeckerNick Mangold and David Harris and to dump Darrelle Revis, but were torn on Brandon Marshall and Sheldon Richardson. How about some of the other decisions facing the front office and coaching staff?

Of course young players like Leonard Williams and Darron Lee or players that performed well in 2016 like James Carpenter and Bilal Powell will return in 2017, but that about those whose performance was more disappointing?

Although the Jets have struggled mightily in stopping opposing teams' offenses this season, rookie LB Darron Lee guarantees that the team's defense will improve in 2017.

"Absolutely," Lee said after Saturday's 34-13 loss to the Dolphins. "There's nothing else to be said. Absolutely. Over my dead body, we'll be better. I will do everything I possibly can to make sure that our defense, we are clicking on all cylinders. I'll do my part."

The Jets defense has allowed 12 passing plays of 40 or more yards, tied for third most in the league, including a 66-yard catch-and-run touchdown by Jarvis Landry on Saturday. New York entered Week 15 ranked 28th in Football Outsiders' defensive DVOA ratings.

Vacc's 3 Keys: Dolphins-Jets 00:01:51
SNY NFL Insider Ralph Vacchiano believes that Jets must contain Jay Ajayi and pressure Matt Moore in order to beat Miami on Saturday night.

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY.TV:

THE GAME: The Miami Dolphins (8-5) at the Jets (4-9) at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J. on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 8:25 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER: The good news, I guess, is that there probably won't be many people showing up to endure this, so there'll be plenty of places for you to take cover inside the stadium. The bad news? The day will be an ugly mix of rain and snow and wind. Probably mostly rain on Saturday night as temperatures actually warm up into the low 40s. But the rain should be pretty steady. So … enjoy!

WHAT IT MEANS: For the Jets, it's nothing but a glimpse of the future. It's Start No. 2 for QB Bryce Petty, who got off to a rough start last week in San Francisco but ended up with decent numbers and an overtime win against a truly, truly awful team. The Dolphins are quite the step up in class.

Regardless of the result - and, yes, I know many of you wanted to keep losing for draft positioning -- what we all wanted to see over the remainder of the season were some encouraging signs for next year and beyond.
