In the seven years since the Giants traded their first-round pick to San Diego in the wow-that-worked-out-pretty-well Eli Manning deal, they've drafted a defensive player with their first pick every year except 2009, when they took Hakeem Nicks. None of those draft choices can be qualified as busts, as Corey Webster (2005), Mathias Kiwanuka (2006), Aaron Ross (2007), Kenny Phillips (2008), Nicks (2009), Jason Pierre-Paul (2010), and Prince Amukamara (2011) have all been contributors on at least one of Big Blue?s two 21st century SuperBowl title teams. (Note: Webster was technically a second round pick, but the Giants? first pick of the 2005 draft nonetheless.)

Although defense has been the norm in recent years, predicting what the Giants will do with this year?s first-round pick is no easy task. Jerry Reese tends to stray away from addressing immediate needs early on in the draft. He is a strict believer in the ?best player available philosophy?, preferring to stock talented players for the future--even if those players are not ready to make an impact right away.

Former Giants' DE Dave Tollefson, who signed with the Oakland Raiders last week, held a conference call for the media today...

What?s it like coming back home? (Tollefson is from Northern California)

?Well, it?s awesome. To grow up here, I lived here for 22 years, to come back home where my mom, my step-dad are out here, my sister, my brother, a lot of my friends. My phone was blowing up as soon as this thing went public. It?s definitely exciting for me and my family.?

Welcome to Friday at GFB. Today's weather forecast here in the New York City is predicted to be sunny and 75. It's March...I have come to the realization that there is no off-season in the NFL any longer. The NFL Network and other year-round entities (such as websites and blogs like this one) never rest. There's always something happening. So, we will keep plugging....

David Carr officially re-signed with the Giants yesterday to backup Eli Manning for another year...Mike Garafolo reported that it is a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum ($925k) with a $65k bonus. Carr did not want to leave - and didn't. As we told you, he loves it here and who's got it better than him? Eli hasn't missed a game in eight years...

-I?m surprised by the release of Phillip Dillard. It isn?t that I was a fan, because I wasn?t. But I was convinced that the Giants were. He was the 2nd team MLB throughout the preseason. If they had designs on cutting him, I would have expected to see more of Herzlich or Greg Jones at MLB during the 4th game. That said, had Clint Sintim remained healthy, then perhaps the Giants would have parted with Herzlich. That would have been a mistake, but at least there would be a clear cut 2nd string MLB on the roster.

-The Giants have depth issues. That isn?t news. And what will either be their key to victory or undoing this year, just may be the stockpile they have at DE. They have an A+ in that area, but Bs and Cs in others. But it is quite impressive that the 4th DE slot on the depth chart has remained a constant since mid-2007. Dave Tollefson deserves a tip of the cap.

Giants DE Dave Tollefson injured his MCL in Sunday's loss to Philadelphia.? The prognosis is he may miss the remainder of the season.

His mother, Debi Crocker, doesn't want to hear his excuses....really....

from SNY Contributor Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Journal....

Debi Crocker has never been one to sit on her hands while watching her son play football. Or for that matter, while watching anyone play football.

Who would have thunk it? Following a training camp riddled with injuries (let alone a 2009 campaign with a disabled list theme) The Giants have only one player ruled out due to injury for their opener.

That player of course is Phillip Dillard, a rookie linebacker who didn't figure to see much playing time today anyway. As reported earlier, Aaron Ross is doubtful.

The Giants, for the first time in recent memory, will have to make as many as 6 healthy scratches to whittle down to 45.

According to coach Tom Coughlin, Jay Alford will have reconstructive knee surgery and miss the entire season.

Alford worked with Osi in the offseason to improve his game and until his injury?he was shining in?camp. Alford was one of the standouts of the summer. The silver lining here is this may open up a spot for a guy like Jeremy Clark or Maurice Evans. Or it could help to retain a veteran like Dave Tollefson.

In an article today in the New York Times, Joe LaPointe profiles one of, if not the biggest asset to the Giants, their defensive line.

Veteran defensive lineman Reynaldo Wynn tells LaPointe how excited he is to be a part of this group of players.

?Everybody wants to know: ?What are we doing? What?s so different?? ? Wynn said. ?I say: ?Look, man, I?m going to be honest. This is D-line heaven. It?s the kind of stuff I?ll be telling my grandkids about.? ?
The Giants lead the NFC with 30 sacks and ranked third in the NFL overall in defense.
