7:27PM: Alain Vigneault met with the media on Friday in Calgary and said (NYR):

  • "Putting Peter instead of Davey. Peter gives us an extra PKer and I'm not using Davey on the PP right now. I thought that for tonight that might help us a bit more. Other than there are no lineup changes."
  • On Calgary, "desperate team. They are in a very tight race in their division. I expect desperation from their end and a hard game. I expect us to play well and play hard. We had good meetings today where we covered some issues and hopefully we will come out and execute and play a real strong game."
  • Has the team played hard, "I believe we are competing real hard. We are making a couple of mistakes here and there that are costly. In terms of effort and preparation I believe our guys are getting ready and competing and that is what you want from players."
  • On finally getting a win, "we are in this to win. I don't know anyone that even plays cards to lose. We are in a competitive game, team sport. We want to win, we haven't won a lot lately, that last game, obviously cheered everyone up and hopefully we took a step in the right direction. We did a lot of good things in that game, capitalized early, had a good start and hope we can do the same tonight."
  • On getting new players, "it takes a while, you know all the players we have picked up, Ryan and Vlad, we have seen through the years and know a lot about them but before you get to know a player and what makes him tick and how do you as a coach get the most out of him and it takes some nice. There is a learning process here and that is what we are going through with a lot of players, the ones we brought in via trade or the ones we called up from Hartford."
  • On guys stepping up, {"growing into becoming a leader, it takes time. As coaches you have to work with young players so that they understand different responsibilities. That is a learning curve. Some players are leaders, I wouldn't say born leaders, because I think that is a characteristic you develop, but some players get it quicker than others. Right now we have a few veteran guys that I expect a lot from, Marc Staal, Mats Zuccarello, Chris Kreider to Hank. There are 2nd/3rd year pros still trying to figure out their game and what their leadership role is on this team."
  • On John Gilmour, "I think Gilly has come in and played to his strength. Good skater, head up, eyes are up, looking for available outlets. He's done a good job, he's beating the forecheck, even though he isn't an overly size defenseman, good size, good position. I've liked what I have seen from Gilly so far."

7:07PM: Alain Vigneault announced that Peter Holland will re-enter the Rangers lineup and do so in place of David Desharnais.

Holland was scratched against Vancouver after Vlad Namestnikov was able to join the team.

With the Rangers down 1-0 early in the second period, Mats Zuccarello sent the puck from the Rangers zone toward the middle of the ice and the puck went to Carolina goalie Scott Darling.

Darling came to the side of the net to play the puck but mishandled it and left it for David Desharnais to put into the the net to tie the game.

Asked about it after the game, Darling said "That was a huge mistake by me. That got them back in the game and then they got the other one. Right now, we don't have a big margin for error, so can't make mistakes like that. That was the difference tonight." (NYR Game Notes)

Carolina coach Bill Peters said "well it's unfortunate. Obviously, it had a little bit of English on it, so that's unfortunate, but there's lots of hockey to be played after that." (NYR Game Notes)
