For New York City FC it's simple: defeat Columbus Crew SC on Sunday at Yankee Stadium in the regular season finale and secure second in the Eastern Conference and a bye into its first postseason appearance."I think what is really important is to put our focus on Columbus because it's important for us to finish second, so I don't think about the playoffs yet," NYC coach Patrick Vieira told the team's website.

Jack Harrison played the corner short to Andrea Pirlo in the 52nd minute. Villa blocked Pirlo's cross toward the goal line and followed it for a narrow-angle finish through the legs of Houston goalkeeper Joe Willis.

Villa nearly added a second in the 58th minute with a bending shot off the post. He completed the task in the 91st with a rising blast from the top of the box that moved him ahead of Bradley Wright-Phillips in the MLS Golden Boot race.

Jefferson Mena and David Villa scored a minute apart before the game was 10 minutes old and New York City FC clinched a playoff berth with a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Fire on Friday night.

Khiry Shelton assisted on both goals as NYCFC (13-9-9) ran its home unbeaten streak to seven games.

Mena got his first goal for NYCFC in the 8th minute on a play that started off a corner kick before Ronald Matarrita sent a long ball toward the right post that Shelton headed out front for Mena to punch it in. Moments later Shelton sent a short pass to his left and Villa dribbled inside the 18 before finding the bottom right corner.

Frank Lampard scored his second goal of the match three minutes into stoppage time to give New York City FC a 3-2 victory over D.C. United on Thursday night.

Lampard took a pass from Khiry Shelton at the top of the area, faked a defender and goalkeeper Bill Hamid with the right, and slammed it home with the left. NYC improved to 12-8-8.

United (7-9-11) led 1-0 late, but NYC's David Villa scored in the 79th minute thanks to a crucial mistake by United defender Sean Franklin, whose back-pass fed Villa on a clean breakaway. In the 85th minute, after a physical scramble in the corner for a loose ball, Shelton pushed it to the center of the box. Villa tapped it to Lampard before getting hauled down, and Lampard buried it for the go-ahead.

Columbus expects another big crowd at Mapfre Stadium on Saturday when Eastern Conference leader New York City FC visits, so Crew SC coach Gregg Berhalter wasn't hawking tickets when discussing the match against the star-studded visitors.

He was merely pointing out that the teams are among the top five in possession and are unlikely to settle into defensive postures.

"We both want to play attacking soccer. We want to play entertaining soccer," Berhalter said. "That will be an interesting dynamic when you have both teams wanting to do that.

Newly acquired midfielder Darwin Ceren will be available for the San Jose Earthquakes when they play host to New York City FC on Friday at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

New York City (10-7-6) sits atop Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference standings with 36 points, three points ahead of second-place Toronto FC. San Jose (6-6-9) is eighth in the Western Conference with 27 points, two points behind the seventh-place Portland Timbers.

San Jose traded Matias Perez Garcia to Orlando City SC in exchange for Ceren just before the transfer window closed Wednesday. Earthquakes coach Dominic Kinnear said Ceren adds needed depth to a position that has been left thin at times this season due to injuries or suspensions to Fatai Alashe, Anibal Godoy and Marc Pelosi.

NYCFC (4-3-4) took the lead in the 12th minute under controversial circumstances. Defender RJ Allen appeared to use his hands to knock the ball away from Darlington Nagbe, but no foul was called. Instead, Allen sent an inch-perfect 30-yard rolling pass into the path of David Villa, who calmly shot the ball past Gleeson for his eighth goal of the season.
