HARRISON, N.J. (AP) The New York Red Bulls have traded midfielder and team captain Dax McCarty to the Chicago Fire for $400,000 in general allocation money.

The Red Bulls announced that they will be paid $200,000 this year and the next for their franchise's all-time leader in regular season starts and minutes played.

Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch says "at this point in time, we felt that this was the right move to put our team in the best position to succeed both now and for years to come."

McCarty joined New York in 2011 in a trade with D.C. United. In 5 1/2 seasons, he made 163 regular-season starts and played 14,381 minutes, both club records. He made 169 regular-season appearances, tied for the most in club history, and recorded 14 goals and 27 assists. He also had 17 playoff appearances.

Last week, Jurgen Klinsmann was fired as the head coach and technical director of the United States men's national team. While he expanded the national team pool, there have been criticisms made of his inability to call up certain players, especially those in MLS who could potentially help.

Bruce Arena was hired to replace Klinsmann. The 65-year old American is returning to the position he held from 1998 through 2006, a tenure that includes a trip to the 2002 World Cup quarterfinals. Arena has not shied away from his appreciation of the domestic player pool, and several Red Bulls players could benefit.

1) Sacha Kljestan

Sacha Kljestan worked his way into the national team picture at the end of Klinsmann's tenure. After being banished for two years, he received a fortuitous call up in September and thrived in friendlies. Despite playing very limited minutes in November's World Cup Qualifiers, he will most likely continue to be a key piece for the USMNT going forward.

Even though the New York Red Bulls lost to the Montreal Impact and were eliminated from the 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs, Dax McCarty reached another historic milestone with the club. The captain made his 198th all-time appearance, surpassing club legend Mike Petke.

McCarty previously set the club record for regular season matches started and all-time minutes played. There's one milestone left, the club's regular season appearance record, which he'll set the next time he steps on the field in a MLS match.

The Red Bulls were beaten in the 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs before they stepped on the field.

There is no way the front office could have known, neither could have Jesse Marsch. The players certainly didn't know, but that doesn't make it any less true. The Montreal Impact knew how they were going to beat the Red Bulls, and they were built this season to execute it.

"We knew they're a weak team in the playoffs," Ignacio Piatti, a striker for the Impact told reporters after the match. "They showed that last year, this year."

The New York Red Bulls are built on a pressing system. It is controlled chaos that works to exploit teams by catching them off guard when they turn the ball over, especially close to the opponent's goal. The Red Bulls have employed this system for two years, presenting plenty of opportunities for teams to learn how to neutralize it.

Fresh off a hard fought 1-0 victory over the New England Revolution, the New York Red Bulls are headed across the country to take on the Vancouver Whitecaps.

With seven regular season matches remaining, the Red Bulls find themselves in a comfortable third place in the Eastern Conference. They're only three points out of the top spot, while currently enjoying a nine-match unbeaten streak.

It's been a tumultuous season due to a succession of devastating injuries and disastrous collapses, but the Red Bulls have weathered most of the storms. Damien Perrinelle and Dax McCarty appear to have made successful returns from injury, which will enable the club to put its best foot forward in the CONCACAF Champions League and MLS Cup Playoffs.

The MLS offseason generally meant turmoil for the New York Red Bulls because of roster changes and new coaches.

But after posting a league-best 18-10-6 record and winning the MLS Supporters' Shield, the revolving door has stopped.

"There was always this uncertainty going into the postseason," said midfielder Dax McCarty, who has played five years with the club and earned MLS Best XI last season. "But this new regime came in and wanted to build a solid foundation for the future. The big thing was that they wanted to bring people back."
