GEICO SportsNite: Knicks 00:01:41
Kristaps Porzingis talks about his career-high 38 points after the Knicks defeated the Nuggets for their third straight win.

Kristaps Porzingis scored at least 30 points for the fifth time this season to lead the New York Knicks to their third straight win with a 116-110 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Monday at Madison Square Garden.

Porzingis recorded 38 points on 14-of-26 shooting, seven rebounds and three blocks for the Knicks, who hung on in the fourth quarter despite seeing their 22-point halftime lead evaporate in the third.

Kyle O'Quinn scored 15 points and brought down 12 rebounds, while Jarrett Jack had six points and 10 assists.

The New York Knicks finally got the inside-outside game they were looking for.

One problem: The Denver Nuggets, the Knicks' opponent on Monday night at Madison Square Garden, may have just found a potent 1-2 punch themselves.

New York enters the matchup coming off its best performance of the year -- and arguably the biggest win in Jeff Hornacek's tenure -- a 114-95 victory over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday. The Knicks handed the Cavs their fourth loss in five games. >> Read more

Furious George: Karl's new book 00:03:11
Daily News Live discusses Former NBA coach George Karl's new book in which he heavily criticizes Carmelo Anthony.

Carmelo Anthony's former coach George Karl called him "a true conundrum" and ripped his defensive effort on the court in a new book called "Furious George," according to the New York Post's Marc Berman.

Anthony played for Karl from January 2005 to February 2011, when he was traded to the Knicks (along with Chauncey Billups) in exchange for Danilo GallinariWilson ChandlerRaymond FeltonTimofey Mozgov and a package of draft picks, a trade Karl said "we won ... definitely."

Though Karl praised Anthony's talent and potential -- he said Anthony could have "become the best defender at his position in the NBA" -- he said Anthony's focus on just one side of the basketball prevented him from being a leader on the Nuggets.

"I want as much effort on defense -- maybe more -- as on offense," Karl wrote. "That was never going to happen with Melo, whose amazing ability to score with the ball made him a star but didn't make him a winner. Which I pointed out to him. Which he didn't like."

The Knicks take on the Nuggets in the final game of their road trip at 9 p.m. ET. on Saturday night.

According to STATS...

  • This will be the first meeting between the Knicks and the Nuggets this season. The Nuggets have won the last three games in this series; this is their longest win streak versus New York since taking four in a row, November 17, 2007-November 27, 2009.
  • None of the Knicks' starters had more than 10 points in Thursday's loss to the Warriors. It was the fifth time in 2016-17, but the first time this month, that any team had a game in which none of its starters scored 11+ points.

The last time New York won in Denver, Carmelo Anthony did all he could to stop it.

The forward has been on the other side of the matchup for the last three of the Knicks' seven-game road skid against the Nuggets, something he'll try to help end Tuesday night.

The Knicks' 109-107 win in Denver on Nov. 8, 2006, featured 37 points and eight assists from Anthony, and he then led the Nuggets to four straight home wins over New York before being traded to the Knicks in a 13-player, three-team deal on Feb. 22, 2011.

The Brooklyn Nets face the Denver Nuggets on the road Friday at 9 p.m.

According to STATS:

  • The Nets beat the Nuggets 105-104 in Brooklyn on February 8, Joe Johnson banking in the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer. That was Brooklyn's fourth straight victory over Denver; one shy of the franchise mark for the most consecutive wins in this series (5, February 17, 2002-March 10, 2004).
  • The Nets lost to the Lakers on Tuesday despite turning the ball over just eight times. It was their fewest turnovers in a road loss since committing seven in a 93-87 defeat at Toronto, April 14, 2013.
  • The Nuggets held the Lakers to just two points off second-chance opportunities on Wednesday. That is the fewest second-chance points allowed in a game by Denver since holding Boston to zero, February 24, 2011.
  • Thaddeus Young had 19 points and 15 rebounds in Tuesday's loss to the Lakers. It was the most rebounds that Young has ever pulled down in a road game.
  • D.J. Augustin has come off the bench to pour in 20+ points in two of his last three games, putting up 19.0 (57/3) points on 57.6 (19/33) percent shooting over this stretch. He averaged just 8.5 PPG on 37.0 percent shooting in his first four games after being traded to Denver.
  • Emmanuel Mudiay turns 20 years old on Saturday. The rookie, who is putting up 5.8 assists per game (272/47), needs to average 5.6 per contest (if he plays in all remaining 21 games) to break Jalen Rose's franchise mark for assists by a rookie (389), which Rose set in 1994-95.

The Brooklyn Nets host the Denver Nuggets at Barclays Center on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

According to STATS:

  • Brooklyn owns a three-game winning streak against Denver dating back to the 2013-14 season. It is the Nets' longest winning streak against the Nuggets since a four-game stretch from 2004-05 to 2006-07.
  • Brooklyn took a one-game road trip to Philadelphia Saturday and lost, 103-98. The Nets have lost six straight road games, but they have won each of their last two home games against Western Conference teams.
  • Thaddeus Young recorded his third consecutive double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds at Philly Saturday. His 24 double-doubles this season are a career high and third among power forwards in the NBA behind DeMarcus Cousins (30) and Anthony Davis (27).
  • Denver beat New York in Madison Square Garden yesterday, 101-96. The Nuggets are now 4-4 on the road against Eastern Conference teams this season after posting a 3-12 record in those games last year.
  • The Nuggets have won four of their last six games, and both losses came by exactly four points each. Denver is averaging 105.2 points per game in that span after averaging 99.7 points prior to that stretch this season.
  • Joffrey Lauvergne played the entire fourth quarter yesterday for the Nuggets against the Knicks. Coming into Sunday, he had played during the fourth quarter just 16 times this season, averaging under six minutes during the quarter in those games.

The more the Knicks lose, the more questions seem to surround them. But the ironic thing is that they are consistent in one specific area: the fashion in which they suffer such defeats.

With their latest loss, a 101-96 defeat against the Nuggets on Sunday, the Knicks displayed a number of behaviors that are becoming all too familiar now. They lack a killer instinct, and players to fail to sense when they can kick it up a notch and go on attack mode. They aren't assertive around the basket. Players aren't showing urgency on the offensive boards, following up shots and creating second chance opportunities. The team's overall defensive intensity is lacking, as is their ability to put up a worthwhile fight for a full 48 minutes over the course of a given contest. Regardless of the circumstances, the Knicks seem to constantly fade away and ice over when the game is on the line in the final minutes. Despite a +13 third quarter that saw New York take the lead, they fell to Denver following an all too forgettable fourth. But unfortunately for the Knicks, such woes are all too evident in what is becoming a recurring nightmare.

Here are more observations from the matinee loss.

Tonight, the Nets try to shake off one of their worst losses in team history when they head to Colorado to face the Denver Nuggets.

No Nets player played more 27 minutes last night, so hopefully they'll be relatively fresh and ready to play tonight, in an arena that's been a house of horrors for them in recent years. In fact, the last time the Nets won a game at the Pepsi Center in Denver was back in January of 2007, when Jason Kidd was still suiting up at point guard.

However, Brooklyn might be catching Denver at the right time, as the Nuggets have lost eight of their last nine games, and have already ruled out a bunch of players due to injury. Nate Robinson, JaVale McGee, Danilo Gallinari, Darrell Arthur, and Wilson Chandler are all out for the Nuggets tonight, and Ty Lawson is listed as doubtful.
