A tradition like none other: the Giants turning heads with their draft class.

The Giants had seven picks in this weekend's draft, adding depth to a number of key positions, including offensive and defensive line, running back and the secondary. Of course, a position that remained untouched was linebacker.

Deon Grant has played in 36 consecutive games for the Giants. His leadership, veteran savvy and instinctive play have been a welcome addition for Big Blue?s maddeningly-inconsistent secondary.

According to Ralph Vacciano of the New York Daily News, the veteran safety may be on his way out of the Big Apple. Grant told Sirius XM that the Cowboys, Lions and Giants have all expressed interest in signing him, but added that a deal is not imminent.

The secondary struggled throughout most of the regular season, ranking 29th in pass yards per game allowed with 225.1. Luckily, Eli Manning made a habit of putting up those same numbers?often better?against opposing pass defenses.

So a lot has been made of Eli Manning?s off the cuff remarks about where he stands in the pantheon of NFL quarterbacks. In a world in search of sensational headlines, main stream media hounds will love hammering Manning for him having the audacity to compare himself to Tom Brady.

?I consider myself in that class.? Manning was quoted as saying. ?Tom Brady is a great quarterback. He?s a great player and what you?ve seen with him is he?s gotten better every year and he started winning championships.?

So what? Manning didn?t thump his chest on a soapbox unprovoked and state this for the masses to hear. He was asked a question on where he felt he stood in comparison to other quarterbacks and answered it with brimming confidence.

The Giants made several roster moves today, most notably the re-signing of safety Deon Grant. Grant was hanging around waiting for the Giants to call, They did. He came.?To make room for Grant, the team released DB Cary Harris.

The other move was for a kicker. No, not Shayne Graham as everyone had thought, but Rhys Lloyd, the former Raven and Panther. ?Lloyd is basically a kickoff specialist, so where does that leave Matt Dodge?

To clear space for Lloyd, CB Woody Turenne was waived/injured. WR Sam Giguere was also waived/injured and the team announced the signing of S Derrick Martin.

I hate to say it but, this season is beginning to remind me of the 2009 season when Jerry Reese went into camp with only 3 safeties.? Kenny Philips went down with a serious knee injury which forced Mr. Reese to scramble for players.

He signed C. C. Brown and Aaron Rouse.? That was a painful season and a painful lesson to learn.? The next year(2010) Reese brought in Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant.

Tight Ends with NFL experience are always a plus for a successful season.?? The Giants are a bit thin in the tight end department with Ben Patrick(FA from Arizona) retiring and the loss of Kevin Boss.? I would guess the Giants brass are burning up the phone lines looking for someone that can block and catch.

In 2010 The New York Giants went 10 & 6 and missed the playoffs for the second year in a row.?? They were embarrassed at home against the Tennessee Titans, lost for the fifth straight time against a not as talented Philadelphia Eagle squad, only to suffer the largest collapse in team history against the same team 4 weeks later.

The once mighty NY Giants defense allowed 347 points ranking them 17th in this category.? The fans waited and held their breath for 137 plus days for their beloved New York Giants to take the field after the lock out.

3. Deon Grant

Although all of the attention was on the outspoken and expensive Antrel Rolle, it was another safety that was one of the biggest surprises of the Giants? season.

From day one, it was apparent that Deon Grant would make Giants fans forget about the days of Aaron Rouse and CC Brown.? His acrobatic interception in week 1 was a statement that he was going to be an impact player for this defense even if he was not a starter in name.

Grant was signed from the Seattle Seahawks as depth behind Rolle and Kenny Phillips, who was returning from a serious knee condition.? But it was Grant who arguably had the biggest effect on improving the defense from 2009?s laughable unit.

Beginning this week, we will be adding a new feature: GFB Giants Players of the Week. I know it's a little late to start this type of thing, but....you know the rest.

The Giants defeated the Redskins 31-7 in Week 13 at the New Meadowlands. It seemed like almost every player out there pitched in to assist in the team's victory.

But we will only pick one player for each unit for the POW segment.....

Q: What do you get when your favorite team brings in a new defensive coordinator who is known for creating a ball hawking secondary that knows how to tackle?

A: The best defensive backfield in franchise history.

The New York Giants secondary is for real.? They tackle, cause fumbles, cover big time receivers, intercept the ball and for the most part (Rolle) go about their business in a true, professional way.

From SNY Giants analyst Mike Garafolo of the Star Ledger....

"Before the first game of the regular season, when Deon Grant found out Kenny Phillips would be the Giants? starting safety opposite Antrel Rolle, Grant said some pretty strong things to the media. He made it clear he wouldn?t be happy as a backup, which he said would be a "hard adjustment.""

While safeties and corner backs across the NFL are being scrutinized and carefully observed for illegal helmet to helmet hits, the Giants safeties and corners have transitioned into well rounded players with an old school style.

How you ask?? By using the fundamentals of the game and showing the world they know how to tackle. ? Including quarterbacks!

This past week, Antrel Rolle, Kenny Philips and Deon Grant showed the world why the New York Giant defense gets the "Most Improved" award in 2010.?? The 3 safeties combined for 11 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 QB hit, 2 pass defended.

S Deon Grant is entering his eleventh NFL season.? He has been with three other teams during his career (Carolina, where he was a 2nd round pick in 2000, Jacksonville and Seattle), has 26 career INTs and has not missed a game - he's played in 144 straight.

Yesterday, reporters got a healthy dose of Grant outside the Indian Quad at U Albany...

On teams that you have been on, were the practices much more physical?

It is difficult to administer a solid grade for Jerry Reese?s 2010 personnel moves because there are less qualitative results to look at and hopefully Reese isn?t finished making those moves. What I will look at is how I think the players project on the team, how much sense the pick seems to make, and what I think Reese passed on.

1) Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida ? Just playing GM in my head, I can think of a number of different ways I would have played this pick. Reese could have gone BPA and taken Derrick Morgan, giving the team a great backup LE, who offers the same kind of element as Big Mike Strahan, including run stopping ability and leadership. He could have gone need and reached a little bit for Sean Weatherspoon to play MLB. Spoon is a projected 10-year starter and another player that offers strong leadership and even a little swagger, a la Antonio Pierce. Instead Reese drafted a third RE, and a very raw one at that, a raw one with high bust potential. Go figure. How good does that aces front look if Tuck and Kiwi slide to the middle and Morgan and Osi are on the outside? I?m just saying? I certainly could be wrong and if this was a team with no needs I would be much more okay with this pick, but as of right now, I hate it: F

2) Linval Joseph, DT, East Carolina ? I like this pick, but why not Taylor Mays, the safety that was projected to go top 5 last draft season? If you ask me what unit I think needs the most help from last season, it?s unquestionably the safeties, especially considering Phillip?s long-term outlook. Mays, so far has proven his biggest fault is that he actually listens to his coaches. Unfortunately that was Pete Carroll at USC last season. Under The Great Mike Singletary Mays appears to be blossoming? so far. At any rate Joseph is a solid pick. He won?t contribute this season as DTs usually are quiet year one, but he?ll make a name for himself in no time and keep the middle solid: B

Fewell, New Giants' Defense Make Debut In New Stadium Tuesday

The Giants' three-day mandatory mini camp begins tomorrow. If you're heading out to the New Meadowlands Stadium Tuesday for what will be an open practice, or if you simply plan to?stay home and let GFB?deliver you your?Giants' fix, here are three important storylines heading into the week:

Where there's "Fewell" there's fire: We start here because of how abysmal the defense was a year ago. As a result, Bill Sheridan is out and Fewell is in. The early reviews are great, from players and coaches. Safeties coach David Merritt summed it up best:

"He's getting after guys in a positive, constructive way," Merritt said about Fewell.?"I mean, it's a beautiful thing, it's infectious. That's what you need and that's what we need as an organization, especially on defense."
