The Jets have seen Sheldon Richardon, Damon Harrison, and Quinton Coples depart within the past few seasons. With the departure of Muhammad Wilkerson thought to be imminent, they suddenly find themselves in a position where they lack depth on the defensive interior.

In addition, a potentially promising pipeline of young depth hasn't really materialized. Deon Simon and Claude Pelon couldn't crack the rotation, and spent most of the year on the practice squad, while Lawrence Thomas became a full back. Leonard Williams will be back, but his 2017 season was arguably just as disappointing as Wilkerson's, and he might find that teams can more readily gameplan around him if he's not surrounded with the same kind of talent...

The Jets placed G Brian Winters on injured reserve with an abdominal injury, ending his season, the club confirmed Wednesday. DL Deon Simon was actiavated from the practice squad.

Winters was injured in the second game of the season against the Raiders and missed next week's game against the Dolphins. He played through the injury until he was scratched from New York's game against the Los Angeles Chargers last Sunday.

Winters, who also ended last season in IR, started 13 games at right guard for the Jets, who drafted him in the third round in 2013 out of Kent State.

The Jets added defensive lineman Lawrence Thomas to their practice squad on Tuesday and released defensive lineman Patrick Gamble.

The Jets had just added Gamble to the practice squad on Monday along with offensive lineman Geoff Gray, wide receiver JoJo Natson and cornerback Terrell Sinkfield.

The Jets claimed four players off waivers on Sunday and added eight players to the practice squad over the past two days.

We've looked at some of the roster decisions facing the Jets as we head into the offseason over the past few weeks. Readers overwhelmingly voted to keep Eric DeckerNick Mangold and David Harris and to dump Darrelle Revis, but were torn on Brandon Marshall and Sheldon Richardson. How about some of the other decisions facing the front office and coaching staff?

Of course young players like Leonard Williams and Darron Lee or players that performed well in 2016 like James Carpenter and Bilal Powell will return in 2017, but that about those whose performance was more disappointing?

We anticipated Leonard Williams was going to be stronger and in better shape entering his second season. He promised he was going to turn some of that pressure into sacks. The preseason saw him making big plays and standing out on the Jets' loaded front line. Now, Williams is really delivering on his awesome potential.

Williams had 2.5 sacks, racked up several pressures and generated constant penetration in the running game. However, it's not the production he generated that I'm excited about, it's the manner in which he did it.

Last year, Williams made a bunch of plays by powering through people or leaning on his brute strength and athleticism. However, what I saw from him yesterday was a tangible development toward becoming a true technician.

Between now and training camp, we've been looking at some of the veteran players on the Jets roster to assess their potential contributions to the team in 2016. Today, we're going to share the first part of a two-part look at the six players still with the team who were part of last year's rookie class but have yet to make their NFL debut. Which, if any, of these players can we expect to make contributions this season?

Part one saw us take a look at the three offensive players that fit into this category; Quarterback Bryce Petty, offensive lineman Jarvis Harrison and fullback Julian Howsare. Here in part two, we'll look at the three defensive players; defensive lineman Deon Simon and linebackers Deion Barnes and Taiwan Jones

In between now and training camp, I'm looking at some of the veterans on the Jets roster to assess what kind of contribution we might expect from them in 2016. We're going to shift gears and take a look at the practice squad in terms of who is eligible, how it will likely be made up and what we can learn from who was on there during the 2015 season.

DL Sheldon Rankins highlights 00:00:38
SNY.tv looks at the best plays of the season from Louisville defensive lineman Sheldon Rankins.

Welcome to the eighth installment of the BGA: 2016 NFL Draft series. As we head to the draft, I'll be sharing thoughts and observations about draft prospects for each position group. In our previous installment, we looked at this year's running back class, and we now move on to look at interior defensive linemen.

I'll be discussing whether the Jets are likely to have a need at these positions, and reviewing some of the top prospects, along with some players who might be options later on. This section will cover defensive tackles, nose tackles and players I expect to line up primarily as 3-4 ends.

These articles are not necessarily meant to be exhaustive, so if you wish to bring some other prospects into the discussion, please do so in the comments section below.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) -- The New York Jets have signed nine players to reserve/future contracts, including guard Jarvis Harrison and defensive tackle Deon Simon, both draft picks from last year.

Wide receiver Joe Anderson, who made headlines by standing outside Houston's stadium with a sign looking for an NFL job, was also among those signed Tuesday. Anderson ended the season on New York's practice squad, as did the other players signed to reserve/future deals.

Harrison was a fifth-round draft pick, while Simon was a seventh-rounder.
