Derick Brassard was introduced by the Senators this morning and said that following that relates to the Rangers:

On his initial reaction "I was kind of shocked. I was coming back from training that morning and I didn't have my phone on me and after a little while I looked at my phone and Marty St. Louis was the first text and said that he thought Ottawa was an up and coming team and a good fit and I was like 'what is he talking about?' and stuff like that and after that my phone started blowing up. I am really excited to be here."

Did you sense something like this, "After losing in the Final and Conference Final with our team it was pretty clear after we got beat in the first round by Pitt that everyone was available in New York. That is hockey and I can't control that. I had no sense that I was going to leave New York but it is what it is and now it's a new chapter in my life and new challenge for me personally. If I can bring the experience and pressure it will be a good fit for me. "

Shortly after the Derick Brassard/Mika Zibanejad trade was announced, Renaud Lavoie tweeted that the two sides started talking at the draft and that the "trade didn't happen before because of a $2M bonus Derick Brassard had to receive on July 15."

On TSN1200 yesterday, Dorion said that he first had a conversation with Jeff Gorton in April and then continued to talk around the draft but the price the Rangers were asking was too high.

Asked if the Rangers bonus payment of $2 million delayed the trade, Dorion joked that he was "stalling" the Rangers to get the price down and that the "money didn't have anything to do with it."

Derick Brassard was on TSN1200 in Ottawa and said the following:

  • On joining Ottawa, Brassard said that "it sounds pretty nice and I am excited to come home and play for the Sens."
  • How did you find out, "I knew there were rumors about the Sens and Rangers and this morning I went for training and the GM for the Rangers is trying to call me and my agent was trying to call and they couldn't reach me. It was actually a text from Marty St. Louis that broke the trade. He wished me good look in Ottawa and said that he thought it would be good for me and that it's an up and coming team and I said I guess I am traded to Ottawa. My family is pretty happy and I am excited to come here and get it done."
  • He spent all of last summer in Greenwich, CT and working out for Ben Prentiss. He is currently in Greenwich working with Prentiss but may return to Ottawa to skate with his new teammates.
  • He said that he loves the atmosphere in Ottawa and hoped to one day playing for the Sens. He said that he started hearing rumors about Ottawa about a month ago and thought 'anything can happen."
  • On this past season, "I was playing with some good players. I am more a playmaker than a shooter but last year, when you get a few goals you get more confident and last year I was finishing all my chances I guess. Playing with Zuccarello and Miller really helped me. When you have a good PP and can produce it will help you."
  • "I was expecting to maybe get moved and it happened today."

The Rangers return from the All-Star break to face the Devils at the Prudential Center at 7 p.m.

According to STATS...

  • The Rangers have won each of their last four road games versus the Devils, tied for their longest road win streak versus New Jersey all-time (also from March 7, 1975 -- October 8, 1976 and from March 22, 1984 -- January 18, 1985).
  • The Devils enter the second half with 112 goals scored on the season, fourth fewest in the NHL. New Jersey has been outscored, 114-112, on the season (not including shootout goals); the Devils have not made the postseason with a negative goal differential on the season since making the playoffs in 1987-88 despite being outscored, 296-295.
  • The Rangers went 6-2-1 on the road through November 21, but are just 3-10-2 on the road since, being outscored by 18 (53-35) over the 15 games. New York went 28-11-2 (.707) on the road last season but is just 9-12-3 (.438) in road games this season -- the largest decline in road win percentage by any team from last season to this one.
  • Mats Zuccarello has scored 18 goals in 49 games played this season, one shy of his career-high (had 19 in 77 games played in 2013-14). However, Zuccarello scored just two goals in January (his fewest in any month this season), and has not scored a goal on the road since December 30 at Tampa Bay.
  • Derick Brassard had two goals and three assists versus Buffalo on January 25, his last game played before the All-Star break. Brassard's five-point game was the first five-point regular-season game by a New York Ranger since Ryan Callahan had five points versus the Flyers on March 6, 2011.
  • Kyle Palmieri has recorded seven power-play goals in 50 games played this season after totaling seven power-play goals through his first five career NHL seasons (in 198 games played). Palmieri's 20 goals, overall, and 35 points this season are each single-season career-highs, and his 15 assists are two shy of his career-high (17 in 2013-14).

He said that what is coming up though is "really important" and that he is confident that this team knows what to do in the second half of the season. (MSG)

Brassard added, "we have played some big games the past two years and we will try and bring that experience to the end of the season." (MSG)
