Nearly two years ago, Stan Van Gundy stood in a crowded hallway at Barclays Center and lamented how the Detroit Pistons did not have chances to win the way they defended and vowed changes to the roster he was coaching. At the time of Van Gundy's impassioned plea for improved defense, the Pistons had dropped 23 of their first 28 games.Detroit split the final 54 games of 2014-15, won 44 games last season and is projected to be a middle seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Pistons wound up 14th in points allowed two seasons ago, improved to 12th last season and have allowed the second-fewest points per game so far.Detroit's defense will look to remain effective Wednesday night when it visits the Brooklyn Nets.

It didn't look like the Nets believed in second chances on Monday night.

Brooklyn was outscored 28-7 in second chance points, and outrebounded 49-39 by the Pistons.

"That was the game," interim coach Tony Brown said. "[Andre] Drummond is a load. That was one area where we fell short tonight."

The Detroit Pistons have easily handled their past two home opponents and a visit from the lowly Brooklyn Nets would appear to give them a promising chance to make it three consecutive blowouts.

The Nets, though, have played relatively well on the road of late and have dominated the recent series against the Pistons heading into Saturday night's matchup.

Brooklyn has also won three of its past four road contests following a 1-12 start there, but was swept in a three-game homestand to start this week. The Nets (10-26) had two of their worst scoring performances of the season in the last two contests, including an 83-77 loss to Orlando on Friday.

In an unusual night for the Knicks, both Robin Lopez and Jose Calderon performed exceptionally well against Detroit on Tuesday. Ironically enough, such success only proves just how elevated New York's play would be if it received consistent contributions at these given positions on a nightly basis. The duo was a major key in a decisive 108-96 victory.

Lopez played great defense on Andre Drummond, who, en route to becoming one of the Eastern Conference's top front-court players, is even beating Carmelo Anthony in All-Star votes. Nevertheless, Lopez limited space for Drummond inside, boxed out and played him rather physically. As a result, the Pistons' center shot poorly and failed to pull down boards. His numbers were well off his MVP candidate averages.

While Lopez anchored the defense, Calderon ran the floor like a pro. The Knicks were moving the ball well and players were constantly in motion without it. Calderon pushed the pace and ran the pick and roll nicely, resulting in a 54 percent shooting night for his squad. Needless to say, this victory came easier than expected. Here are some other observations from the win.

Friday night in Detroit, the Nets got blown out by the Pistons, in an ugly game in which the Nets were simply not competitive for most of the game.

Down by as many as 29 points, Jason Kidd elected to pull his starters midway through the third quarter, and none of the starting five played more than 25 minutes apiece.

For the third time this season, the Nets were overmatched by the Pistons' size and strength. Few teams have Brooklyn's number more so than Detroit does right now.

Tonight, the Nets look to make it four in a row, as they put their three-game win streak on the line against the Detroit Pistons at the Palace of Auburn Hills. It'll be the second time the two teams have faced off this season, with the Pistons winning the first matchup by a score of 109-97 on November 24.

In that game, the Nets were dominated on the interior with Brook Lopez out of the lineup with an ankle injury, as the Pistons outscored them 56-22 in the paint, including a 20-0 advantage in the paint in the third quarter. Now, as the Nets get set to face the Pistons again, Lopez's status is up in the air after he re-injured his ankle last night.

The last time the Pistons hosted the Nets was last March. Deron Williams led the way with 31 points as Brooklyn won 119-82.

On Wednesday night, the Nets defeated the Detroit Pistons by a final score of 93-90.

The Skinny: Brooklyn started where they left off from Tuesday night, scoring only nine points in the first six minutes. The Pistons went on a 12-3 run to open a 10-point lead, as the Nets were ice cold from the field. Reggie Evans and Keith Bogans started picking up the offensive pace, as a 14-5 Nets? run cut the Detroit lead to one after one.

Andray Blatche gave the Nets the lead to start the second quarter, but the Pistons followed with a 10-0 run to open a nine-point lead as Brooklyn went four minutes without a bucket. The Nets though began chipping into the lead with a 7-0 run to close the half. Joe Johnson was incredibly cold to start the game, but a three-pointer in the final minute of the half allowed the Nets to get within six at the break.
