Two big wins on the weekend against two of the NHL's top teams have the Detroit Red Wings in a much better frame of mind as they head into Tuesday's crucial home date with the New York Islanders.

On Sunday, the Red Wings whipped defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh 5-2, handing the Penguins just their fourth regulation loss at home this season. That came on the heels of Saturday's 3-2, home-ice shootout win over the Washington Capitals, the top team in the NHL standings.

"It certainly feels good," Detroit forward Thomas Vanek said. "Like I've said before, the big picture is not pretty, so I think the message is just play game by game."

The Rangers and Red Wings meet up for the final game of the regular season on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Madison Square Garden.

According to STATS...

  • The Red Wings are 15-3-4 in their last 22 games against the Rangers. Detroit scored a total of seven goals in their seven losses to the blueshirts during this stretch - including three times shut out since January 2014.
  • Detroit can clinch its 25th straight playoff berth with a regulation or overtime win against the Rangers. They currently have the longest active playoff streak in the four major North American sports leagues. The San Antonio Spurs of the NBA are next on the active list with 19 in a row (including this season).
  • Henrik Zetterberg is one goal shy of passing Brendan Shanahan for eighth in Red Wings history in goals, a feat accomplished by Pavel Datsyuk in February. Zetterberg has scored 309 goals in his 13 seasons with Detroit.
  • The Red Wings are on the verge of clinching a playoff spot despite having a minus-12 goal differential on the season. Last season, no NHL team reached the postseason with a negative goal differential. Coincidentally, Detroit was the last team to accomplish this back in 2013-14 (minus-four).
  • For the eighth time in his 11 seasons with the Rangers, Henrik Lundqvist was voted by the media as the Rangers' Most Valuable Player, extending his franchise-record for the amount of times he's won the award. The award has been given annually since the conclusion of the 1941-42 season.
  • Keith Yandle is the first Rangers defenseman to tally at least 40 assists in one season since Brian Leetch posted 45 in 2001-02. He is one of three NHL defensemen who have recorded at least 40 assists in each of the last three seasons (along with Erik Karlsson and P.K. Subban).

The Rangers (45-27-9) relinquished their hold on third in the Metro and fell into a tie with the Islanders after the 4-1 loss to their crosstown rivals. Both clubs have 99 points, but the Isles have two games remaining.

"It's been like that every year, the last couple (of games) sorts out the seeding and who you're going to play," Marc Staal told the club's official website. "We wanted to win this game, we wanted it bad.

"... But we haven't lost any confidence in this room."

No matter where they finish, the Rangers will open the playoffs on the road. However, third place sends them to Pittsburgh - which has won eight in a row and 14 of 15 - while the first wild card pits them against Atlantic champion Florida. New York lost three of four to the Penguins this season but won two of three against the Panthers. >> Read More...

The New York Rangers face the Detroit Red Wings on the road Saturday at 2 p.m.

According to STATS:

  • The Rangers have lost each of their last two road games versus the Red Wings, and are 1-6-0-2 on the road versus Detroit since the start of the 2000 calendar year (their worst road record versus any opponent over that span). Over that span, New York has been outscored, 33-20, on the road versus Detroit.
  • The Rangers won, 4-2, at Buffalo on Tuesday. New York took a 3-2 lead into the third period and is now 24-1-0 when leading after the second period, one of five teams with one or fewer losses when leading after the second period (entering the weekend; also Pittsburgh, Washington, New Jersey and Tampa Bay).
  • The Red Wings beat the Jets at home, 3-2, on Thursday to snap their three-game losing streak. Detroit trailed by two goals before scoring three unanswered goals en route to the win. The Red Wings now have five comeback wins when trailing by at least two goals this season, tied with Dallas for the most such wins in the NHL (entering the weekend).

  • Derick Brassard had one goal and one assist on Tuesday, giving him 50 points on the season (his second consecutive season with at least 50 points). Brassard has recorded at least one point in each of his last three games, totaling two goals and two assists over that span.
  • Rookie Dylan Larkin scored his 20th goal of the season on Thursday, giving him 20 goals and 20 assists. Prior to Larkin, the last Red Wings rookie with at least 20 goals and 20 assists was Henrik Zetterberg in 2002-03.

New York will look to get off to a much better start on Monday afternoon after surrendering the first four goals in a 6-3 loss at Carolina on Saturday that ended its three-game win streak.

"For whatever reason, we didn't start on time," coach Jack Capuano said. "You play 82 games, it's going to happen. Let's not kid ourselves."

John Tavares has 14 points in nine games after getting two in each of the last two. The All-Star center has scored a goal in four of the past five games after netting his team-leading 21st against the Hurricanes. He has four goals and 10 assists in 11 career games versus Detroit and scored on a power play Feb. 6.

Dylan Larkin and Tomas Tatar each had a goal and an assist, and the Detroit Red Wings routed the New York Islanders 5-1 for their first home win of 2016, a game delayed 36 minutes by a malfunctioning Zamboni that chopped up a section of the ice.

The Red Wings, who were 0-4-1 at home since Dec. 20, also got goals from Tomas Jurco, Mike Green and Kyle Quincey. Petr Mrazek made 28 saves to improve to 8-2-1 in his last 11 starts.

John Tavares had New York's only goal. Jaroslav Halak was pulled after allowing four goals on 13 shots.

The start of the third period was delayed after a Zamboni ripped up a line of ice stretching from in front of the Red Wings net past the blue line. As a result, the teams changed ends at the midway point of the third so that neither team would get an advantage from the bad ice. >> Read more...

The Detroit Red Wings' most recent win came against the New York Islanders in their final game before the All-Star break. Back-to-back road losses followed, but the start of a five-game homestand might not provide much relief.

Detroit has dropped five in a row at Joe Louis Arena and looks to avoid its longest skid there in two seasons in Saturday's rematch with the Islanders.

Justin Abdelkader and Danny DeKeyser scored in a 1:11 span of the second period to lead the Red Wings to a 4-2 victory over New York on Jan. 25. Detroit (25-18-8) was then outscored 9-4 in back-to-back games in Florida.

The Red Wings haven't fared as well in most of their recent visits to the New York Islanders but will try to change their luck in their first trip to Brooklyn on Monday night.

Detroit (24-16-8) showed a little more spark offensively in two games this weekend, scoring three goals in each after averaging 1.8 in its previous 11 contests. The Red Wings used one of those performances for a 3-0 win in Buffalo on Friday but fell 4-3 to visiting Anaheim on Saturday.

(AP) -- Though the Detroit Red Wings haven't exactly been on a tear, they're still picking up points nearly every game.

After ending a three-game losing streak, Detroit looks to continue its home domination of a New Jersey Devils team that's looking to avoid a fourth straight defeat Tuesday night.
