So basically, at this point, we know that Matteau was not pleased he was benched and made it known to the team after the game. There was clearly an "animated discussion" after which the team and Matteau decided to part ways. Who decided first and with what curse words is still unknown, but this latest revelation doesn't really do a ton to help Matteau. Of course his agent is going to try to spin it that the team acted first, but even if that's the case, Matteau, at 19 years old, shouldn't be verbally sparring with the coaching staff or team management to the point where they decide it's just best to part ways with him. Everyone gets benched at some point or another. Matteau was benched multiple times while with the Devils this season. As for the "quit vs. released" side of the argument, the "he didn't wanna wait for his flight" argument just feels so thin and flimsy and spun. Regardless of who decided to quit on the other, the only person who comes out of this looking poorly is Matteau, who looks like a kid with an attitude problem and a bad temper, neither of which were evident during his time around the Devils earlier this year. I have feeling this won't be the last we hear of this story.
