Shaw joined DeBoer's staff last summer as a replacement for Adam Oates, who took the head coach job in Washington. Shaw, who came over from the Sharks, was primarily responsible for the power play -- and we all know how that went this season. Shaw's shoot-first system was drastically different from Oates' "find-the-best-shot" plan and the Devils never looked comfortable in Shaw's scheme all season long. The lockout and subsequent lack of a real training camp likely had a lot to do with that, but it seemed clear that Shaw's view of the power play didn't really match up with the personnel. I wrote after the season that I wouldn't be surprised if the Devils tried to change up at least one assistant on the staff and Shaw seemed the likely scapegoat given that Scott Stevens is the other assistant. Not to get all conspiratorial on you, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if Shaw was "encouraged" to find another opportunity. Either way, DeBoer has to find a power-play specialist to join his staff.
