Now, Plan B is a must. The Devils have lost their captain, leader and best player to free agency, or better known as the Minnesota Wild.

It's not time to start panicking, but the Devils must flip to the next page and begin life after Parise. So, what's next for the Devils?

The Devils could go after Alexander Semin. Mostly likely, the third best player in free agency.  Hard to say if the Devils want to spend money on a player like Semin, but teaming up with his Russian friend Ilya Kovalchuk is not a bad idea. His numbers have gone down lately but he's still capable of producing a 70-point season.

There's also Andrei Kostitsyn, who the Devils could sign to replace Alexei Ponikarovsky.

Another option for the Devils could be trading for Ales Hemsky. He's on the trading block but his $5 million salary cap will be tough to sell.

Petr Sykora wants to return to the Devils and now that Parise is gone, it looks like Sykora will be res-signed by the Devils. A one-year deal at the most.

I don't want to start any speculations here, but what would the Devils need to give up to bring Rich Nash or Bobby Ryan to New Jersey. Would the Devils be willing to trade Josefson, Tedenby or Greene and a prospect for one of those guys. They did that when Kovalchuk was on the market. The Devs have Eric Gelinas and Jon Merrill in their system.

According to STATS:

  • Washington was blanked, 3-0, in Ottawa on Tuesday night, snapping its 14-game point streak in the process (12-0-2 during streak). The Capitals failed to score despite getting six power-play opportunities against the Senators two nights ago -- tied for their most PPO with lighting the lamp in any game this year.

  • Kyle Quincey potted the Devils' lone goal Tuesday night, giving him two markers in his last five skates (had two goal in his first 42 games of the season). Quincey has lit the lamp one time in 13 career games against the Capitals.
  • The Capitals have 11 different skaters with 20+ points in 2016-17 -- tied with the Wild for most of any NHL club. New Jersey has seven players with 20 or more points this season (tied for 16th in the league).

The Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils find themselves at opposite ends of the standings as the two Metropolitan Division rivals play their final game before the NHL All Star break Thursday night at the Prudential Center.

Sitting atop not only the division, but the entire National Hockey League, the Capitals (32-10-6) are in contention for a second consecutive President's Trophy. They own a league-best plus-51 goal differential, have allowed the fewest goals of any team (104), and are 12-1-2 in their past 15 games.

Meanwhile, the Devils (20-20-9) are tied for last place in both the division and Eastern Conference with the fifth fewest points in the league, and are desperately trying to avoid a fifth straight year out of the playoffs. The Devils have scored only 111 goals, third fewest in the NHL.

The Devils (20-19-9) are coming off a rousing 4-1 road victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, their fourth win in the past five games. New Jersey's recent success after a dreadful 4-9-2 month of December revived the team's playoff hopes.

In contrast, the Kings (22-21-4) have lost four games in a row, including a 3-2 defeat to the Rangers in New York on Monday. The four-game losing streak is Los Angeles' longest this season following a pair of earlier three-game skids.

Beau Bennett (lower body), Andy Greene (left arm), and John Moore (concussion) will all be unavailable for New Jersey's game against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, while Cory Schneider (illness) is likely to play, according to Andrew Gross of The Record.

Schneider, who has been serving as the team's backup goalie for the last two games because of a stomach illness, said he's feeling much better today and is once again eating.

Bennett missed Saturday night's game against the Flyers after injuring himself during the Devils' 3-1 loss to the Canadiens on Friday.

The Devils take on the Canadiens at the Prudential Center on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

According to STATS...

  • The Canadiens beat the Devils, 5-2, at home on December 8 and are 9-2-2 versus New Jersey since the start of the 2013 calendar year. Montreal has won each of its last two games played against the Devils; the Canadiens have not won three straight versus New Jersey since winning three in a row from January 24 -- March 11, 2008.
  • The Canadiens lost at home to the Penguins, 4-1, on Wednesday, their second consecutive loss. Montreal has scored just one goal (total) over its last two games, its fewest goals scored over a two-game span since lighting the lamp just once over a two-game span from March 19-20, 2016.

The Devils (18-18-9) travel to Minnesota to take on the Wild (28-9-5) on Tuesday.

According to STATS:

  • New Jersey's 2-1 overtime win over the Wild on October 22 extended the Devils' winning streak versus MInnesota to three games. New Jersey boasts a record of 12-5-2-0 in the all-time series, though the Devils are just 4-4-1-0 as the road team in those games.
  • After posting consecutive 2-1 victories at Calgary and Vancouver, the Devils will now seek their first three-game winning streak since taking five in a row between November 6 and November 15.
  • The Wild's 3-2 victory at Chicago on Sunday, when they overcame a 2-0 deficit, lifted Minnesota into a two-point lead over the Blackhawks in the Western Conference. And the Wild have played four fewer games than Chicago.
  • Cory Schneider stopped 21 of 22 shots in Sunday's victory at Vancouver, when he lowered his GAA in January to 1.74, the second lowest in the NHL this month (minimum 5 GS). Schneider's .940 save percentage in January ranks third.
  • With positive ratings in each of his last four games, Ryan Suter has boosted his season plus-minus to +28, the best mark in franchise history. Suter has seen at least 20 minutes of ice time in each of his last 202 games played, the third-longest active streak in the league.
  • By winning on Sunday, Devan Dubnyk improved to 23-7-3 this season. The 23 victories are tied with Manny Fernandez (2005-06) and Niklas Backstrom (2009-10) for the most ever by any Minnesota Wild goaltender prior to the All-Star (or Olympic) break.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The New Jersey Devils have considerable work to do if they want to make a run at the playoffs. They're only four points back of the Carolina Hurricanes for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot, but would need to leap-frog several few teams.

Still, having gone 2-0-1 in the first three-quarters of their current four-game West Coast trip, there is a greater belief in the Devils' locker room that by playing their own low-scoring style, they can re-insert themselves in the postseason conversation as they head into a date with the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.

"We're not a team that's going to score five or six goals every night," said Devils forward Taylor Hall, who had the overtime winner in a 2-1 victory at the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. "We've got to be a team that generates offense by shooting the puck to the net, keeping it simple in the o-zone and guarding them out down low."

The New Jersey Devils will not change their logo or red-and-black color scheme next season, according to the Bergen Record's Andrew Gross.

Amid speculation about possible changes to the Devils logo and jerseys, Gross writes the Devils will have a similar identity next season even though Adidas will take over for Reebok next season.

The Devils did not comment on next season's jerseys, according to Gross.

  • New Jersey dropped a 3-2 overtime decision in Edmonton last night, losing its fourth straight game, and falling to 4-11-3 (.306) since December 8 -- second worst in the league (Colorado -- 4-12-0, .250). The Devils have activated forward Jacob Josefson off injured reserve and sent forward Nick Lappin to the AHL, the team announced Friday.

Josefson was placed on IR earlier in January with all illness after battling with a concussion in late December.

In 35 games with the Devils this year, Lappin had seven points (four goals, three assists) and a minus-10 rating.

Josefson has just two points in 16 games.
