Tied early in the third period with the Lightning, it had appeared the Devils had gained the lead on Andy Greene's goal, but an offside review took the score away and kept the game tied.
Tampa Bay head coach Jon Cooper challenged the original call, which was then determined to be offside, as forward Mike Cammalleri jumped over the blue line just ahead of the play.
"When it happened live, I had no idea," Greene said, according to Chris Ryan of NJ.com. "I thought it was a different play actually that they were questioning. It happens, it was the right call, and you just move on."
The Devils would fail to find the back of the net for the rest of the game, and Tampa took the lead for good not long after on Valtteri Filppula's goal.
"I think the referees do a good job and there's nothing we can do about that," head coach John Hynes said. "It is what it is."
