Need to know: The Devils' Michael Cammalleri and Jaromir Jagr missed in the shootout, while Jason Spezza and Jamie Benn coverted for Dallas.
Damien Brunner, who tied the score at 2 with 11:42 remaining in the third, was the first star. Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen (25 saves) was the second star. Cory Schneider had 35 saves for the Devils, who were outshot 37-27.
Brunner's goal stood after a review that appeared to show a hand pass by Patrick Elias, who got an assist. But hand passes are not reviewable; the call has to be made by an on-ice official (Record, Oct. 24).
The Devils honored longtime color commentator Chico Resch, who retired after 17 years in the role last April. Doc Emerick, Resch's partner for the first 14 years, MC'd the pregame ceremonies and the two teamed up in the broadcast booth for a few minutes. Martin Brodeur was cheered and Zach Parise booed when they appeared on the video board to congratulate Resch.
Next up: The Devils visit Ottawa Saturday night at 7 p.m. It will be an emotional night at the Canadian Tire Centre as the team will honor Nathan Cirillo, the solider killed in Wednesday's shootings in the Canadian capital. The Senators have asked fans to wear red.
