Devils C Travis Zajac will be out four to six months due to surgery to repair a torn left pec muscle.
Zajac suffered the injury during offseason training last week, and surgery was successfully completed Thursday morning.
The 32-year-old is a vital piece to the Devils, having served as their first-line center last season. He totaled 45 points (14 goals, 31 assists) in 80 games.
Zajac has spent all 11 seasons in the NHL with the Devils after the team drafted him in the first round in 2004. The earliest expected return would be December if his rehab stays on course.
