Now Commenting On:

The Devils finally bolstered their scoring on the wing! Wait, the season's already over and playoffs already started? Bummer, dude. I'm kidding, of course, but they did sign a scoring winger to a two-year deal Thursday.

Depending on what the Devils do in free agency, Whitney should get a chance to compete for a roster spot in training camp next year.

I had the opportunity to speak with Whitney, the A-Devils' leading scorer two years running, back in March. I asked him about watching his buddies-- the Matt Andersons, Jacob Josefsons, and even Tim Sestitos-- get called up before him.

"I'm happy for those guys to get the chance to go up," Whitney said. "This is a team here, and we're looking to win. We take a lot of pride in the guys we have in the room, we're just trying to battle here down the stretch."

The Reading, Mass. native not only sounds like a hockey player, he sounds like a Devil.

Whitney plays a fiery game, very Theo Fleury-esque-- in fact, Fleury and Whitney are both only 5-6. Still, the 25-year-old forward has recorded 95 points in 138 Albany Devils games, and considering the number of free agents the big club has, they might need Whitney to step in and play as one of its bottom-six forwards.
