At Rangers practice yesterday, Ryan Callahan did not replicate what Mark Messier did in 1994 when he guaranteed that the Rangers would defeat the Devils in game six of the Eastern Conference Finals.

John Tortorella said that 1994 has nothing to do with how the Rangers are preparing for tonight's game and Mike Rupp told the NY Post that this team wants to create their own history, ?We?re not here to duplicate this thing someone else did, or the way they did it. We have to write our own story.?

Rupp added, ?In this locker room, we all believe we?re going to win."

John Tortorella let it be known yesterday during his press conference that he is not happy with some of the things that the Devils are doing in this series.

Tortorella said that the Devils seem to be taking their time getting up on the ice and are interfering with the Rangers as they try to make plays in the defensive zone.

Maybe if our players stayed down on the ice, we'll get something.

At CBC, Tim Wharnsby lists five storylines for the Rangers and Devils series including hte history between the two teams, the brawling regular seaosn that they have and the presence of General Managers who are both near 70 years old.

On the two teams meeting, Ken Daneyko said on HNL Saturday,? "this is the dream matchup. We saw the animosity during the regular season. It's going to be good tough hockey. They don't like each other, that is a good thing and it will be a good series."

Dave Maloney said that the key to this series for the Rangers is the same as all the other series: "can they find a goal when they need it."

?It?s fun. It?s a great building to play in. Their fans are unbelievable. It?s loud there. They?ve got a great crowd and it?s fun to play there. It?s always high intensity with those guys. They?ve played well, especially this year.?

Elias to the Star Ledger

Martin Brodeur played in his first game against the Rangers as a 19 year old in 1992 during the Rangers and Devils playoff series.

Brodeur stopped 12 of 15 shots as he came in to replace Chris Terreri in the Devils 8-5 loss to the Rangers. (Mike Richter made 43 saves)

It was during that series where Brodeur told Fire and Ice that he started to hate the Rangers:

Devils center Travis Zajac was on Joe and Evan this morning and was asked if he wanted to see the Rangers in the Eastern Conference finals.

"I know the fans do, but to us it doesn't matter. We are ready for either Washington or the Rangers, but with either team, it's going to be a tough series."

"They're really playing as a team more than anything this year. For the forwards, you always have to keep an eye on where Gaborik and Richards are on the ice. They are the big guns who can turn a game around. It's a team machine with a couple of highlight players who can take the game over in their favor. They also have a lot of speed up front. [Carl] Hagelin has surprised a lot of people. He creates a lot of stuff with his speed."

In the NY Post, Mark Everson writes that former Rangers coach Colin Campbell, currently the NHL's Vice President, brought Devils coach Pete BeBoer and GM Lou Lamoriello into the league office to talk about what happened last Monday between the Rangers and the Devils.

Everson writes that it isn't known if John Tortorella was talked to by Campbell.

At The Hockey News, Ken Campbell writes that John Tortorella should not have given in to what the Devils started last Monday and instead put out his skilled players to go up against their tough guys.

If I?m John Tortorella, I?m looking at who the Devils are using to start the game and I put out a forward line of Derek Stepan between Marian Gaborik and Ryan Callahan with Brad Richards and Michael Del Zotto on the blueline and skate circles around them. By responding with his enforcers, Tortorella allowed Devils coach Peter DeBoer to dictate the ground rules rather than establishing them himself.
That sounds like a good idea until Cam Janssen hits and injures Marian Gaborik and then everyone gets on Torts for not starting his tough guys. Under the circumstances Torts did the right thing and once again proved to the league that you can't intimidate or out-tough this Rangers team.

Scoring: Stats: 3 Stars:
  • 3: Mats Zuccarello
  • 2: Brandon Dubinsky
  • 1: Ryan Callahan
Thoughts:
  • It feels really good to see them clinch a spot in the playoffs before the end of the season. It shows how far this team has come from last season to this season.
  • Well we wanted secondary scoring and tonight, with Stepan, Dubinsky, Girardi and Mats Zuccarello, we got it.

  • Brandon Prust had a great game and deserved all the praise the broadcasters were heaping on him.
  • The Rangers played "the right way" tonight and it showed. They had a high level of intensity and left everything on the ice.
  • It's an important win not just for the two points, but to give the team some confidence in beating a good team.

During the post game show on MSG last night, Henrik Lundqvist was asked if the Rangers loss to the Devils last night was a wake up call.

Hank answered, "We'll see how we respond. We all feel like we can play better. I don't think we should over think it. It starts with how hard we play. We need to be very focused and make good decisions out there. We have been playing smart hockey and working really hard so that is what we need to get back to."

Lundqvist added a couple of times that the team needs to "stay together" and work through their issues.

At TSN, Kerry Fraser writes about the disputed goal call at the end of the game between the Rangers and the Devils this past Tuesday.
Upon closer inspection, we see that Volchenkov places his stick between the legs of Gaborik and the pressure exerted causes the NY Ranger to fall and crash into Brodeur. The clear evidence is seen when the players attempt to untangle themselves in the crease. Vochenkov's stick blade can be found stuck in the plastic blade holder of Gaborik's left skate!

If anyone didn't think the contact from the back side was significant to put Gaborik into Brodeur, Volchenkov's stick placement should provide the smoking gun!

Al Trautwig was very upset by the call not being a goal.

He adds that Volchenkov was backing away from Gaborik as Gabby connected with Brodeur.

  • Ilya Kovalchuk: SCORES
  • Derek Stepan: MISSES
  • Zach Parise: STOPPED
  • Brad Richards: STOPPED
  • Patrik Elias: STOPPED
  • Marian Gaborik: STOPPED
Stats:

Thoughts:

  • This game seemed destined for OT/SO when Ilya Kovalchuk scored, but the Rangers responded the best way that they knew how and took back the lead. The Devils got a lucky bounce tied the game and won in the shootout.
  • Best thing is that they can get this out of their mind right away and head up to Buffalo tomorrow and get back to winning.
  • Marian Gaborik made a hell of a pass to Michael Del Zotto on the Rangers third goal.
  • All goals tonight were from secondary scorers which is nice, but it's still the primary scorers that need to take the charge.

Scoring Summary:

Stats:

Thoughts:

  • In case you happen to forget how great Henrik Lundqvist is, he certainly reminded you tonight. The Devils, and Marty, bring out the best in him and he was spectacular.
  • The GAS Line was great with Derek Stepan having a great game two assists. Artem Anisimov had a goal and an assist and Marian Gaborik had two goals and an assist.
  • Stu Bickel and Tim Erixon were both pretty good.

First Period:
  • Adam Henrique for New Jersey
  • Brad Richards (1) scored off of Adam Larsson's skate.
  • Derek Stepan (1) with an absolutely spectacular shot to beat Marty Brodeur.
Second Period:
  • Marian Gaborik (1, PPG) batted the puck out of the air and put it in to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead.
  • Jacob Josefson and Ilya Kovalchuk scored to tie the game.
Third Period:
  • Brendan Bell put a long shot towards Brodeur that may have been tipped but was the game winning goal.
Stats:

Thoughts:

  • Brad Richards looks like he might work out. Just a hunch.
  • Loved Derek Stepan's game. Looks poised to not step back this season. The shot he took was spectacular.
  • Too many penalties, but some were from guys who won't be on the team.
  • Overall I think the Rangers had a nice game from most of their guys. The top line looked good. Step and Cally were good. Rupp showed off his game. MDZ was a little up and down, but not terrible.
