Giants GM Dave Gettleman knows there is much work to do this offseason to upgrade a roster that has many holes to fill. The 2020 NFL Draft will hopefully shore up some of those, but with a little over $61 million to work with at the moment in cap space, according to Over The Cap, Gettleman can also be aggressive on the free agent market.

Looking at the Giants roster needs and the current free agent class, adding a pass rusher (or maybe even two) is definitely in the cards for Big Blue.

It's no secret at this point that the Giants would love to add more defensive ends or outside linebackers that can get in the backfield and disrupt the quarterback. The defensive line is solid against the run, coming in seventh in the NFL this past season, according to Football Outsiders. Rookie Dexter Lawrence teaming up with second-year men Dalvin Tomlinson and B.J. Hill showed tremendous upside in clogging up the interior.

The Giants landed a promising gem with defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence.

The 17th overall pick from the 2019 NFL draft was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team recently and adding to that is an honor from Pro Football Focus

The football analytics outlet named Lawrence the NFL's best rookie interior defensive lineman in 2019.

The Pro Football Writers of America have released their All-Rookie Team for the 2019-20 season, and one Giant has made the list.

DL Dexter Lawrence, the 17th overall pick by New York in the 2019 NFL Draft, has made the cut after a solid rookie season.

Lawrence was actually Pro Football Focus' top-graded rookie after the first six weeks. He had totaled two sacks, a forced fumble and two tackles for loss in those contests.

Now that the Giants have finally conceded they really are rebuilding, new head coach Joe Judge faces what John Mara called "a daunting task." And that's not just because he's a 38-year-old, first-time head coach, either.

It's because the Giants went 9-23 over the last two years and could look very different by the time they hit the field for the start of next season. They do have a few good, young pieces to build around, but the reality is they still have plenty of holes.

To fill them, both Judge and GM Dave Gettleman swear it'll be a "collaborative" effort -- that they'll work together, and that their philosophy on how to build an "old school" team is already perfectly aligned. That remains to be seen, of course. But in case they need any help in getting started, here's a blueprint for them to quickly make the Giants a contender again:

The Giants' 2019 season didn't go to plan.

Despite a 4-12 overall record, there might've been one positive that came out of Blue Big's bad year. Plenty of young players got playing time, rookies specifically.

And the Giants' first-year pros used that valuable time well, according to Pro Football Focus

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Giants had never really fired a general manager before Dec. 4, 2017, when Jerry Reese was told to clean out his office. The closest they came was in 1978, when Andy Robustelli left on his own, saving the Maras from pushing him out the door.

From 1979 through 2017, the Giants had three general managers with an average tenure of 13 seasons.

There's a reason for that kind of front office stability -- a very good reason. And no matter how frustrated John Mara and Steve Tisch may be with the last two miserable seasons, they shouldn't ignore that and change their philosophy with Dave Gettleman now.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - If this really was the end for Eli Manning, at least it was a fitting finale.

And if this wasn't the end ... well, maybe it should be.

The Giants' icon got to go out a winner, and once again heard the cheers from the crowd, in what might easily was the best performance of his final season in New York. The 38-year-old quarterback completed 20 of his 28 passes for 283 yards and threw two touchdowns. Sure, he also threw three interceptions. But his performance was enough to snap the Giants' franchise-record-tying nine-game losing streak and to beat the Miami Dolphins 36-20.

Currently in his first season with the Cleveland Browns, former Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is having arguably the most disappointing season of his career.

On Thursday, Beckham was unclear on his desire to be back with the Browns next season.

"No one knows what the future holds tomorrow,'' Beckham said. "I couldn't tell you what's going to happen. My locker is right beside one of the men (Jarvis Landry) that means the most to me in the world. I think about just being able to come to work and see him every single day and how special this could be. I couldn't sit here and tell you whether I'm going to be here, want to be here, don't want to be here."

Pat Shurmur was still the Giants head coach on Monday morning, which is how it will likely stay for at least the remainder of the season. And his assistant coaches will apparently remain on the job with him, too.

On the morning after what might have been the most humiliating loss of his Giants tenure, Shurmur said: "Having slept on it, no, I'm not going to make any coaching changes." He had said the same thing in the moments after the Giants' 34-27 loss to the Jets on Sunday afternoon, but that didn't stop speculation that he could change his mind -- or that ownership could change it for him.

A team source confirmed, though, that there were no immediate plans for ownership to either fire Shurmur or to force any staff shakeup in the wake of the Giants' 2-9 record -- at least until the end of the season.

The Giants have officially announced the trade with the Jets to acquire DL Leonard Williams, with the NFL trade deadline passing.

The terms of the deal were Williams in exchange for a 2020 third-round pick and a 2021 fifth-rounder that could become a fourth-round selection if the Giants sign him to an extension.

"I'm just ready to bring some toughness, some pass rush, some run stop, everything," Williams told Giants.com's Michael Eisen. "Being a good teammate to the guys, being a good guy in the building on and off the field, just know that I am going to give it my all every day."

It may be too early in the season, but it looks like the signing of OLB Markus Golden is panning out just the way the Giants had hoped.

One of the biggest concerns with this Giants defense entering the season was whether or not they had the personnel to create a consistent pass rush. In Week 1, that concern was even bigger with Cowboys QB Dak Prescott having all the time in the world to find his receivers downfield.

And then after Week 2 when the Giants couldn't get pressure on Bills QB Josh Allen, it had some frustrated with CB Janoris Jenkins saying he couldn't cover a receiver for 10 seconds -- calling out the pass rush.

Giants linebacker Alec Ogletree injured his hamstring in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Buccaneers and will not return today.

He seemed to pull his hamstring after running down the field with what he thought was a recovered fumble after Dexter Lawrence knocked the ball out of Jameis Winston's hand on a throw. Ogletree slowed down on the run and was knocked over by Jabrill Peppers, who wanted the linebacker to keep on running.

The play was called dead and was ruled an incomplete pass by Winston.

If there was one thing the Giants wanted to make clear after their first regular-season practice on Monday, it's that, "We're a better team than we were a year ago," as Pat Shurmur said. No Odell Beckham, no Landon Collins? It's no problem to them.

Yes, they were 5-11 last season so that bar isn't particularly high. And yes, there is an element of, "What else are they supposed to say?"

But the Giants really do seem to believe in addition by subtraction, that by removing a handful of big-name stars they've been able to build a better team -- no matter what the outside world thinks.

Following the departures of some key defensive players, Giants linebacker Alec Ogletree is expected to be a presence both on and off the field this season. It's one thing to go out and play well, but being a leader in the locker room requires the ability to mentor the younger players on the roster.

There's no shortage of those in Giants camp this season. After taking Daniel Jones sixth overall, Big Blue spent the next five picks on players on the defensive side of the ball, including DT Dexter Lawrence

Ogletree's had a keen eye on the rookies, and likes what he's seen through the first two games of the preseason.

Rookie Dexter Lawrence came to the Giants with a nearly unblemished football record.

The defensive lineman has no notions of changing his status with the Giants.

Big Blue is viewed more in the short term as a rebuilding franchise, but Lawrence set the bar high for his career with the team. He wants a plethora of titles.

The Giants ended up making three picks on the first night of the 2019 NFL draft, but despite that, oddsmakers aren't viewing any of them as potential game changers in their rookie seasons.

According to BetOnline.ag, quarterback Daniel Jones, the sixth-overall pick, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, the No. 17 selection, and cornerback Deandre Baker, the 30th pick, all received modest odds for their respective Rookie of the Year Awards.

There's a twist in regard to Lawrence and Baker, though. The later-drafted Baker has better odds at the hardware. Baker clocks in with 28/1 odds while Lawrence is at 33/1, which are the same odds that quarterback Jones landed for the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.
