The Jets have traded CB Dexter McDougle to the Eagles for S Terrence Brooks, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter

The Jets were in need of some safety depth, which is why the move was made according to Schefter.

McDougle was drafted in the third round by the Jets in 2014. He didn't play that year due to a torn ACL in preseason. He was also waived prior to the start of last season before signing on the Jets' practice squad.

This preseason, I'll be spotlighting an under-the-radar player who impressed me in each game and assessing that player's chances of making the team. Today, we'll look at one of the top performers in the Jets' 16-6 loss to the Lions, cornerback Dexter McDougle.

Who is he?

The Jets have added CB Dexter McDougle to the active roster, waived TE Kellen Davis and have brought LB Victor Ochi back to their practice squad, the team announced Saturday.

McDougle was a third-round pick by the Jets in the 2014 draft. was originally waived by the club early in the season and was re-added to the practice squad. After missing the entire 2014 season with an ACL injury, McDougle recorded six combined tackles in 14 games last year.

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles spoke to the media on Monday in advance of the team's preseason finale on Thursday. He said:

  • He does not have a set timetable for when LB David Harris, who suffered a "bad bruise" on his right shoulder in Saturday's preseason game against the New York Giants, will be ready to return to the field.
  • He believes the competition at right tackle between Brent Qvale and Ben Ijalana is "even right now." Both are expected to play on Thursday.
  • The team has not yet named a starter at outside linebacker.
  • He does not think rookie LB Jordan Jenkins will play on Thursday due to a calf injury.
  • He has not decided whether or not the Jets will play two or three quarterbacks on Thursday.
  • Cornerback Dee Milliner did not practice due to a sore hamstring. Linebacker Bruce Carter did not practice due to a sore shoulder.
  • Wide receivers Quincy Enunwa and Kenbrell Thompkins, who did not play Saturday due to a concussion and groin injury, respectively, both practiced on Monday.
  • Cornerback Dexter McDougle is battling a hamstring injury.
  • He thought rookie QB Christian Hackenberg handled his preseason debut "pretty good" after throwing for 105 yards, one touchdown and one interception on 6-for-16 passing.

GEICO SportsNite: Jets camp 00:02:48
Catch Jets training camp highlights and interviews with Ryan Fitzpatrick and Muhammed Wilkerson.

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles spoke to the media after training camp on Sunday. He said:

  • Running back Matt Forte and cornerback Dexter McDougle are dealing with hamstring injuries.
  • He was impressed with rookie linebacker Darron Lee's speed, but added that Lee needs to focus on all of his abilities heading into the season.
  • Tight end Jace Amaro is still making progress in his return from a season-ending injury last year.
  • Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is still building a rapport with the team's new wide receivers. "We've only practiced two days so he has got a ways to go practicing and we've got ways to go chemistry-wise, but they're talking and they're making progress and they're communicating," Bowles said.
  • He does not have an update on DE Muhammad Wilkerson's return from a broken leg.

In between now and training camp, I'm looking at some of the veterans on the Jets roster to assess what kind of contribution we might expect from them in 2016. We're going to shift gears and take a look at the practice squad in terms of who is eligible, how it will likely be made up and what we can learn from who was on there during the 2015 season.

DB Vernon Hargreaves highlights 00:01:37
SNY.tv looks at the best plays of the season from Florida defensive back Vernon Hargreaves.

Welcome to the tenth installment of the BGA: 2016 NFL Draft series. As we head to the draft, I'll be sharing thoughts and observations about draft prospects for each position group. In our previous instalment, we looked at this year's wide receiver prospects, and we now move on to look at cornerbacks.

I'll be discussing whether the Jets are likely to have a need at these positions and reviewing some of the top prospects along with some players who might be options later on.

These articles are not necessarily meant to be exhaustive, so if you wish to bring some other prospects into the discussion, please do so in the comments section below. There are a few cornerback prospects that I'm saving for when I discuss special teams prospects in a few weeks.

New York Jets punter Ryan Quigley (4) (William Hauser)

It perhaps wasn't a surprise that the Jets would have two costly special teams breakdowns in their biggest game of the year. Ryan Quigley's 21-yard shank from his own end zone set up the Bills' opening score as the Jets trailed from that point onwards.

This was compounded when Randy Bullock missed a 40-yard field goal with the Jets already trailing 13-0.

It's difficult to be too harsh on the team for individual mistakes by their punter and replacement kicker, because the main complaints against the special teams unit has been the personnel filling out each of the special teams units rather than the specialists themselves.

The Bills exposed a flaw in the Jets' gameplan by completing so many underneath passes to Sammy Watkins. The Jets left Darrelle Revis in single coverage and he consistently gave Watkins too much of a cushion. Watkins ended up with 11 catches for 138 yards on just 15 targets. While Revis wasn't to blame for all of that yardage because there were situations where they were in zone, he still lost that matchup more than he won it.

This highlights a problem with Revis about which I discussed my concerns a few weeks ago: The Jets are paying Revis to cover number one receivers one-on-one and if he can't handle those assignments almost flawlessly, the whole defense falls apart but if you give him a more conventional role, what exactly are you getting for your money?

They could have played even more zone or given him safety support, but the idea behind keeping him in one-on-one assignments is that it enables the Jets to blitz and hopefully gives some of their best pass rushers a one-on-one of their own. This gameplan would have worked against Rex Ryan while he was with the Jets, but Tyrod Taylor is much more adept at taking what the defense gives him than the quarterbacks Ryan had and the Bills also left extra blockers in the game quite a lot to help mitigate the pressure.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) -- Cornerback Dee Milliner is doubtful for the New York Jets' game against the New England Patriots on Sunday with a strained hamstring.

Milliner did not practice this week after being hurt in the Jets' 19-16 victory at Dallas last Saturday.

Linebacker David Harris, who left the game with a bruised back, is probable after being a limited participant in practice Friday. Fellow linebacker Calvin Pace (abdomen) is also probable.

While most of the attention will justifiably go towards the coverage breakdown that led to the 80-yard punt return for a touchdown by Dwayne Harris, that was only one of several special teams breakdowns that could have cost the Jets the game.

However, ironically, it proved to be special teams that won the game for the Jets (or, at least, lost it for the Giants) with Randy Bullock's field goal in overtime being followed up by a Josh Brown miss - his first of the season.

On that punt return, the first problem was that Ryan Quigley out-kicked his coverage. Three of Quigley's other four punts went out of bounds - perhaps by design - while the other was just a 30-yard net after another decent return on a kick near the sideline.

Last week, I was wondering whether Darrelle Revis was worth the money the Jets were paying him because if he's not always going to handle the zero-coverage assignments the Jets give him and they don't benefit greatly from the traps, one-on-ones and blitzes that this enables, they might be better off just employing a more conventional gameplan in the secondary.

In yesterday's game, they were effectively forced to make that move anyway with Revis out (and especially after Marcus Williams left with a knee injury).

Williams had come up big with his fifth interception of the season as Miami looked to complete a pass near the Jets' goal line with no score in the first quarter. He jumped the route well as Tannehill threw late due to pressure. I really hope the knee injury Williams suffered came on the tackle after he made his return and not the celebratory dance he performed afterwards.
