According to ESPN.com's Buster Olney, Sandy Alderson and his staff deserve a B- grade for their work prior to Monday's July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

While the Mets were able deal Lucas Duda and Addison Reed for four pitching prospects, they did not trade away Neil WalkerAsdrubal CabreraJay Bruce, or Curtis Granderson, all of whom are eligible to be free agents at the end of this season.

Bruce, 30, and Walker, 31, are both owed roughly $6 million for the remainder of 2017. Granderson, 36, is due around $5 million, and Cabrera, 31, who has an $8.5 million team option or $2 million buyout for next season, is owed roughly $2.5 million.

While July 31 is considered the "trade deadline," trades can and do happen through August via waivers, and the Mets will be looking to take advantage of this process...

The Mets will make a "good run" at re-signing 2B Neil Walker after this season, a team source told Kristie Ackert of the Daily News.

Walker, 30, was acquired before the season from the Pirates in exchange for LHP Jon Niese, who the Mets re-acquired last month.

"I like the players we have here, I like what I think we are building for this season and for years to come," Walker told Ackert.

Bruce looks forward with Mets 00:03:57
Jay Bruce is excited to jump into a playoff chase and play meaningful baseball after joining the Mets in a trade with the Reds.

In bringing in Jay Bruce, the Mets have acquired what they hope is a lifeline. Their season is on the brink. They are 7.5 games out of first in the National League East and 2.5 games back of the second wild card spot as one of five teams chasing it. This is not a short-sighted deal, of course, but it is geared to bringing short-term benefits.

With the nagging quad injury saddling Yoenis Cespedes, Bruce has become the Mets' marquee bat until last year's trade deadline snag can reclaim an everyday spot in the lineup.

If there is a belief that Bruce can bring about as much impact as Cespedes did last season, even general manager Sandy Alderson laughed at the thought of the new slugger alone facilitating last summer's rocket-ship flight to the postseason. The Mets can hope and dream but the circumstances of this Mets team and last year's are different.

However, he was eventually traded to the Rangers with reliever Jeremy Jeffress for a relief pitcher and top prospects Lewis Brinson and Luis Ortiz.

The Brewers asked the Mets for Triple-A 2B Dilson Herrera during trade talks for C Jonathan Lucroy, industry sources told NY post reporter Mike Puma.

Herrera, 22, is hitting .276 with a .327 OBP, 13 HR, 22 doubles and 55 RBI in 86 games for Triple-A Las Vegas, while striking out 72 times in 359 at-bats.

"As part of a proposed deal, the Mets would have sent Travis d'Arnaud and either Herrera or Brandon Nimmo to the Brewers as part of a package for Lucroy, but the two sides never got close to striking a deal," Puma explained.

New York Mets OF Michael Conforto is unlikely to get sent back to the minor leagues, team officials told ESPN.com's Adam Rubin.

"They would not swear to that decision late Monday, but acknowledged the only shakeup when the Mets resume play on Tuesday against the Royals at Citi Field may be Travis d'Arnaud's return from the disabled list," Rubin wrote.

"You don't want to panic early, but, right now, with what's going on, we may shake some things up," manager Terry Collins told reporters this past weekend. "We have to start playing better, so we'll see what we can do."

Mets assistant GM John Ricco spoke with the media on Wednesday after the club traded for Neil Walker. Here's what we learned...

  • Discussions for 2B Neil Walker began Tuesday night and the two sides agreed on the deal rather quickly.
  • Walker was on the Mets' short list, and they view him as a positive alternative to Ben Zobrist.
  • The Mets will consider also using Walker at third base, but he'll likely spend the majority of the time at second base,
  • The Mets still like Triple-A 2B Dilson Herrera a lot, but the deal for Walker could give Herrera another year to develop and become an even better player.

At Baseball Prospectus, head prospect man Jason Parks did did his thing and talked a little Mets' baseball.

redguy12588 (Pittsburgh): What did the Pirates give up in Herrera, a utility infielder or an occasional all-star 2nd baseman?

Jason Parks: I don't see an all-star future; rather, I think Herrera has the potential to play as a regular at the highest level. That's a pretty high ceiling given the fact that he plays an up the middle position.

On Tuesday, the Mets traded John Buck and Marlon Byrd, two players who have zero value to the team beyond the end of the 2013 season, and cash, to the Pirates, for minor league infielder Dilson Herrera, a player who might be worth something in the future, and a player to be named later. That on its face is a win.

Byrd, who will be 36 in three days is enjoying the best season of his career, with career-highs in homeruns (21), OPS (.848) and OPS+ 136. The Pirates, who just placed Starling Marte on the disabled list needed an outfielder. Byrd will slide right into their everyday lineup now. And eventually, when Marte returns, forcing Jose Tabata to the bench.

On the catching side, the Pirates have run with Russell Martin and two guys below replacement level in Tony Sanchez and Michael McKenry. John Buck, who can pop a home run a few times a month, despite having few other virtues as a player, will give fortify their catching depth.
