The Nets' offense is being held back by its lack of production at the point guard position.

ESPN's Mike Mazzeo notes that, in Brooklyn's loss to Toronto on Tuesday, Nets point guards combined for a six-points, eight-assists, and five-turnovers, while shooting just 3-for-11 from the field. By comparison, the Raptors' Kyle Lowry scored 23 points, had nine assists, and five turnovers, while shooting 7-for-16.

Donald Sloan started at the point and managed just two points in 28 minutes.

The Clippers (38-20), who have alternated wins and losses in their last six games, have won 10 of the past 11 home matchups with the Nets.

Chris Paul had 15 points and 14 assists in a 105-100 win at Brooklyn (17-42) on Dec. 12, but he may need to do more scoring with the Nets playing at a quicker pace under interim coach Tony Brown.

The new scheme has Brooklyn averaging 104.9 points over its last nine games - nearly eight above its season average - while shooting 48.6 percent from the field and 44.3 from 3-point range.

One man was nearly enough for the Nets in Portland, but Brook Lopez couldn't do it all by himself.

Lopez scored a season-high 36 points to go along with 10 rebounds and a career-high four steals, but Brooklyn couldn't find a way past Portland thanks to a poor start that put the Nets behind the 8-ball.

"We had a lot more energy (in the second half) and we knuckled down on defense and got some stops," Lopez told reporters after the game. "We came out a bit relaxed. I don't know what it was. There really is no excuse to start that way."

Rivalry Check is an ongoing series in which we preview 10 of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

New Faces: The Indiana Pacers didn't make too huge of a splash this offseason, only some minor tweaks here and there. The selected forward Solomon Hill out of Arizona with the No. 23 back in the NBA Draft. It was among one of the many unpredictable moves during this year's draft, with Hill being off many analyst's radar.

In need of a backup point guard, the Pacers signed C.J. Watson, formerly of the Brooklyn Nets. Last season, Watson averaged 6.8 points and 2 assists as Deron William's backup. The team also added Donald Sloan, who last year averaged 4.1 points and 1.9 assists with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
