Friedman says that the belief is that the Rangers next GM will come from in-house and the three possibilities are Doug Risebrough, Jeff Gorton and Jim Schoenfeld. (CBC)

  • Told that there is nothing to speculation that Sather is stepping down as Rangers' GM.
  • Nothing has changed in two weeks since Sather announced intention to remain as GM during conference call with media.
9:20AMJames Murphy, of ESPN Boston, wrote on his personal website that an NHL source as well as a Rangers team source is telling him that Rangers GM Glen Sather is considering stepping down from that position and letting someone else take over the player personnel decisions.

Murphy says that Sather would retain his role as President of the organization and would appoint either Jim Schoenfeld, Assistant General Manager, Player Personnel, or Doug Risebrough, "Hockey consultant", to take over as GM.

According to Elliotte Friedman on Hockey Night in Canada, Glen Sather is pushing Rangers consultant Doug Risebrough very hard as a candidate for the vacant GM position in Montreal.

The Rangers media guide says that Risebrough's position with the Rangers is that he works closely with Glen Sather on transactions and player personnel decisions.

Risebrough spent the bulk of his playing career as a member of the Canadiens.

Late Friday night, Darren Dreger mentioned that Glen Sather will remain as Rangers GM for this upcoming season.

...Its reality and something we have to deal with. Of course certain people still don't believe it but everyone can choose to write and believe what they want.

In his weekly must read column, Elliotte Friedman of CBC writes:

19. The Rangers killed rumours last week that Glen Sather was going to drop the GM title (be president only) with Doug Risebrough taking over. Risebrough is somewhat in demand. He's a serious contender for the Tampa job and, if San Jose makes a change, he has a connection with president and CEO Greg Jamison.

On March 1st, Larry Brooks reported that the Tampa Bay Lightning were interested in Rangers consultant/scout Doug Risebrough to take over the team.

Today, Damien Cristodero of Tampa Bay.com reports that Risebrough is "very interested" in the position in Tampa Bay.

Risebrough was the GM of the Minnesota Wild for eight seasons and played for Montreal and Calgary.

Larry Brooks, in his slap shots column yesterday, writes that the new ownership of the Tampa Bay Lightning will reach out to former Minnesota Wild and Calgary Flames GM Doug Risebrough to take over the Lightning.

This season Risebrough is working as a scout for the Rangers.

Brooks says that permission from the Rangers hasn't been given yet.
