Duke Calhoun

With free agency (hopefully) around the corner, the Giants will soon have to decide whether or not they want to pursue free agent Plaxico Burress.? A lot of factors will go into this decision, not the least of which is the current wide receiver core.? Let?s take a look:

Duke Calhoun, Michael Clayton, Derek Hagan, Jerrel Jernigan, Mario Manningham, Hakeem Nicks, Devin Thomas, Ramses Barden, Victor Cruz, Domenik Hixon, Steve Smith, Travis Beckum

Yes, I am aware that Travis Beckum was drafted as a tight end/H-back, but the Giants don?t use the H-back and he can?t cut it as a tight end.? At this point, his best shot to make the team is as a slot receiver.

Some days, you don?t want to be right. Today, any Giants fan that shared my disapproval of keeping only Kevin Boss and Travis Beckum know exactly what I?m talking about.

So now, we here at GFB get to play the ?What if? game. Let?s spin the wheel:

The official Giants inactives have been announced and there are two variations from our GFB projections.

Duke Calhoun will join Cruz in sweatpants on the sidelines. Interesting to see who guns for New York on punts.

Surprisingly Linval Joseph is also sitting this one out. This leaves the Giants with only 3 DTs.

When I went to Giants' rookie camp he was there. He was there again at mini camp, and then training camp. He was not highly regarded but he always caught the crowd's attention whenever he was on the field.

84, 84...I looked on my sheet... Duke Calhoun.? Who?

He was a tall, lanky wideout from Memphis.? A basketball school.? Figures. No wonder he stands out. He's probably a reject from the basketball team.

With the announcement that Sinorice Moss is headed to IR, Victor Cruz's chances of making the final roster increased substantially.

For those of you who have been? living under a rock or in the Peace Corps since July, Cruz has been having the most productive preseason of any WR in the NFL.

Three months ago, there wasn?t much room for change amongst a crowded receiving corps.

Ramses Barden was guaranteed a spot as was the talented and versatile Domenik Hixon. Hixon in fact freed up 3 roster spots in essence, due to his ability to return both punts and kicks.

Add in the three starting receivers (Smith, Nicks, Manningham) and the receiving corps of a ?run first? team is up to 5 players.
