The next week will be "regarded as important" for the talks between restricted free agent Victor Cruz and the New York Giants as the two sides look to agree to a long-term contract, sources tell Pro Football Talk.

Earlier today, Giants co-owner John Mara expressed confidence the two sides would agree to a deal soon.

The PFT report states the next seven to 10 days will be important to the progress of Cruz and the Giants reaching a deal, though the timeline is a bit head-scratching considering there are no significant deadlines or milestones approaching.

In an interview with the NFL Network Tuesday morning, New York Giants co-owner John Mara again stated his confidence in a deal being struck between the team and restricted free agent Victor Cruz.

The April 19 deadline has come and gone, and should Cruz choose not to sign with the Giants he would be ineligible for the 2013 season.

Cruz has yet to make an appearance at team off-season workouts and is holding out in hopes of a receiving at No. 1 wide receiver-type payday; the Giants view him as a top-end slot receiver.

With the signing of running back Andre Brown yesterday, Victor Cruz is the lone restricted free agent yet to sign his tender with the team.

Earlier this off-season, Cruz was slapped with a first-round tender, which is worth $2.879 million. Last Friday was the final day to solicit offers from other interested teams, but Cruz's deal sheet was empty.

Still, though, Cruz is unsigned and has yet to report to the Giants' off-season workout program.

According to reports, restricted free agent wide receiver Victor Cruz was seeking a deal from the Giants in the $10-11 million per year range under his previous agent.

It is unknown what Cruz, who will now be represented by CAA and Roc Nation Sports headed by rapper Jay-Z, is now asking for.

The Giants previously offered the wideout a long-term deal worth $7 million annually, in addition to $20 million in guaranteed money. The standard set for wideouts was set earlier in the off-season when the Chiefs signed Dwayne Bowe to a five-year, $56 million contract.

The New York Giants slapped restricted free agent wide receiver Victor Cruz with a first-round tender this afternoon.

According to co-owner John Mara, the Giants want to retain Cruz long-term, but "there's a limit" to what they'll pay him.

"If he took our offer, he'd be a very wealthy man," Mara said, adding, "if someone is willing to pay more than we are, then we'll have to say goodbye."

During his book release earlier today, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin used the story of one of his players to demonstrate some of the learning points.

Victor Cruz, a restricted free agent whose future with team remains in question at the moment, represents the epitome of "working hard when no one is watching," according to Coughlin, one of the principles mentioned in his book.

When asked about Cruz's future in New York, Coughin had this to say:
