The addition of Andrea Bargnani and Metta World Peace has New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony excited about the upcoming season, but not enough that he can commit to the team long-term.

Anthony, 29, can opt out of his contract following the 2013-14 season. He has been rumored to be a target of the Los Angeles Lakers, where the franchise will look to rebuild and reemerge after the loss of Dwight Howard.

When asked whether the Knicks? offseason transactions have affected his decision to stay with the Knicks beyond next season, Anthony said he could not comment.

The major hype right now surrounding the Brooklyn Nets is their search for a new coach.

P.J. Carlesimo did an admirable job on an interim basis, but assuming he didn?t lead the Nets to the Eastern Conference finals, his fate was pretty much sealed long before his firing.

Owner Mikhail Prokhorov and general manager Billy King want to bring in their own guy, and that search is ongoing.

On Tuesday night, the Nets were defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers by a final score of 92-83.

The Skinny: The Nets? ?Big Three? scored the first 14 points for Brooklyn, but Pau Gasol?s work on the glass helped the Lakers battle to an early tie. Brooklyn then went on a 7-0 run with Deron Williams heating up from the outside. Williams finished with 11 points in the quarter as the Nets led by six after one.

To start the second quarter, Earl Clark guided the Lakers to a 10-2 run to take the lead, as the Nets went ice cold from the field. Back-and-forth ties and lead changes ensued before Los Angeles orchestrated an extended 19-5 run to open a 12-point lead. A Mirza Teletovic three-pointer in the final seconds cut the deficit to nine points at the break.

Tonight at 7:30 p.m., the Nets battle the Los Angeles Lakers at Barclays Center.

Brooklyn will look to conclude its four-game homestand with a win. Dwight Howard will finally be where he wanted to be all along ? in Brooklyn ? but he will not be playing in the game.

The Lakers are in a hot streak right now, having won five of their last six games including the last two. If Los Angeles plans on making a playoff run, this pace of play needs to continue.

NEW YORK ? After hanging on late for a close win Friday night over the Chicago Bulls, Deron Williams was not in the mood to worry about the Los Angeles Lakers coming to town. He said it was too early to even think about that with the imminent three-day rest.

But that three-day break is now over, and Williams and the Nets are gearing up for their Tuesday night matchup with the Lakers.

For the second consecutive week, the Brooklyn Nets will host one of the NBA's premier attractions. Back on Monday, Jan. 30, it was the Miami Heat. On Tuesday, Feb. 5, it will be the Los Angeles Lakers.

Both Dwight Howard and Deron Williams have made no secret of their once-upon-a-time mutual desire to play together. Obviously, things didn't work out.

Earlier on Monday, Williams told the media that he and Howard were "not really" tight anymore. We suspect we know why...

The Los Angeles Lakers are 15-18 and have become an ongoing saga that continues to get worse as the days go by. The team has three rough games this week and are in danger of finding themselves even further outside the West's playoff race.

After Dwight Howard was traded to the Lakers, he let it be known that Brooklyn was his preferred destination. Since then, things haven't gone so well in Los Angeles.

NEW YORK ? Despite the fact that the NBA has opted to eliminate the center position from it's All-Star ballot, Tyson Chandler and Brook Lopez showed the NBA that there are still at least two true 7-foot centers patrolling the paint in the Eastern conference.

On Monday evening at Barclays Center, Chandler and Lopez were just that as the Brooklyn Nets defeated the New York Knicks, 96-89, in a game that needed overtime to be decided.

Brooklyn Nets fans?and especially those who were fans of the team while it was in New Jersey?know all too well about the "Dwightmare" that engulfed the team for the past year and half. Many thought that Dwight Howard would end up as a member of the Brooklyn Nets. Meanwhile, in New York, the Knicks struggled with their point guard situation and the idea of signing Steve Nash became quite popular.

New York City nearly got both stars, but today, has neither.

We're sure you?ve heard about the new-look Nets, since they enter the season with more hype than any team in recent history.

Maybe it?s because of the new location or maybe it?s the revamped roster, but this team has extremely high expectations.

Tyson Chandler

One of the stories that won't die is Shaquille O'Neal's seemingly claiming that Brook Lopez is better than Dwight Howard. Yes, we fully understand that we are helping to douse the flames here a bit... But wouldn't you want to know if an opposing player weighed in?

A lot of people have weighed in on this debate. But Tyson Chandler, the starting center of the New York Knicks, has an opinion worth noting.

Our friends over at BrooklynFans.com got some great footage of Avery Johnson, Deron Williams, and even Brook Lopez himself responding to Shaquille O'Neal's recent comments about "The Diesel" preferring Brook Lopez over Dwight Howard...

In case you missed it, in a recent sit down for NBA.com, Shaquille O'Neal seemed to suggest that Brook Lopez and the Philadelphia 76ers' Andrew Bynum were both better centers than the Los Angeles Lakers' Dwight Howard.

Now, we've got some responses...

TNT analyst and former NBA great Shaquille O'Neal made news yesterday when he gave some thoughts on the center position in the NBA. Obviously, that implicated Dwight Howard. .

It seemed as though Shaq declared that the Brooklyn Nets' Brook Lopez is a "better" center than Dwight Howard. And that comment, taken by itself, seems rather curious... That is, until you read exactly what O'Neal said...

Word all morning is that the Nets are desperately and?feverishly trying to close a deal that will bring Dwight Howard to Brooklyn, his preferred destination for some time. While no deal is imminent it appears to be getting there as we talked about yesterday. There was whispers that Kris Humphries isn't thrilled about the idea of a one-year deal heading to Cleveland,

I just spoke to a source close to the Magic and Dwight Howard trade situation in regards to any Knicks involvement. The answer was blunt.

"Not at all,"?the source said when I asked if the Knicks were in engaged in ANY sort of dialogue to try and trade Howard to New York. "There is zero dialogue."
While it appears that it's a foregone conclusion Howard is destined to head to Brooklyn, I'm told, the Magic prefer to send Howard to the Western Conference and that stalemate has been going on since before the trade deadline. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, but this does appear to be Carmelo Anthony part two.

A move to add ?Superman?? for Chandler and Stoudemire is risky. But standing pat with Lin as the starting point guard is risky, too. Nash would change everything, and the Knicks are trying to add more salary to their sign-and-trade with the Suns to compete with the Raptors? potential bid of more than $10 million per year.

Without Nash, the Knicks look no stronger than a first- or second-round playoff team, not on the same level of the champion Heat. They could become the newest version of the Hawks, with their former coach on the bench.

Since we're in a world of rapid reading let me preface the following by saying I think any chance of a deal happening with Orlando is extremely slim.

That said, Stephen A. Smith went on record on the radio the other day noting a source saying that the Magic are exploring a possible deal that would send Dwight Howard to New York for Amar'e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler, who can't be dealt before March 1st.

?Amar?e is an unbelievable player but his name hasn?t come up,?
Orlando official

I can tell you with full knowledge and disclosure that Stoudemire was offered for Paul on the day they were pressing to acquire Chandler. It was a shot in the dark.

The Howard situation is something we've been on the case with as well. And, again, I won't take any Howard to NY rumor seriously unless my sources tell me that there is legs to it. Right now it seems as if Orlando is trying to play the roll of Denver last year. There is absolutely no rush for them to do any deal, like the Nuggets last year, if they are winning games and potential trade partners are losing them. It's beneficial for them to watch the Nets' (for example) draft position improve night after night. This draft is loaded.

This is something that's floated around in my brain recently as it relates to free agents. I don't see the Knicks being able to land Jeff Foster, frankly, but this concept applies to other players.

Remember last year the heat just kept signing player after player after player after the decision? Those players were trying to hop aboard the gravy train. So why aren't players beating down the door to sign with the Knicks and make their OWN championship run?

Simple.

This is something that has been tossed around these parts and yes, as it relates to Phil Jackson, it makes more sense for the Knicks to land a big player. This is going to be another one of those years, fans, strap yourselves in.

In a word. No.

But for the sake of making a post that's not CBA related:

Two important caveats: first? if Howard really wants to come to New York and play with Stoudemire and Anthony, he could make it happen. He?d just have to take less money. Probably a lot less than he?d get by staying in Orlando. Unlikely, sure? but possible. Second? at this point, we?re just making educated guesses as to what the next CBA will look like, based on rumors, innuendo, and the occasional outright lie. The Knicks? chances of fitting Howard under the 2012-13 cap will be a lot clearer once the next CBA has been signed, sealed, and picked apart by writers far smarter than this one.
Look, I'm all for speculation, but it can't happen. It can happen in Brooklyn, however at this point it's hard to really talk about especially without proper CBA figures.
