SS-A: @ Hudson Valley Renegades 8, Brooklyn Cyclones 2

After a six-run first inning, off of?Cyclones starter Yohan Almonte?(4 IP, 7 hits, 6 runs, 5 er, 1 bb, 2K), the Hudson Valley Renegades cruised to a 8-2 victory over Brooklyn (40-21).? This was a rare tough start for Almonte (7-4, 2.23 ERA), who?had been?dominant over his previous 4 starts: 29 IP, 15 hits, 1 er, 4 bb, 21K.?

The Cyclones offense was stymied by Renegades pitching to the tune of 2 runs, 3 hits, and 15 strikeouts.? All 3 hits came in the fourth inning, where the Cyclones were able to score their only 2 runs.? Also in the inning was the ejection of Brooklyn manager Wally Backman.? Funny that Backman was ejected in the only positive inning for his team.? Cory Vaughn had the toughest time at the plate, going 0-4 with 4 ks.?

Good pitching and good hitting is a great combination. A.J. Pinera (pictured) was very good once again.? Pinera pitched six shutout innings, giving up only two hits and striking out five.? Pinera, the Mets 2010 18th round pick, now has a 13 inning scoreless streak.

Offensive stars include: Luis Nieves (2-5, 2B), Darrell Ceciliani (3-5, 2RBI now hitting .395/.448/.544), Cory Vaughn (2-5), Jeff Flagg (2-4, HR, RBI), Joe Bonfe (1-3, RBI), Brian Harrison (2-4, 2B), and J.B. Brown (2-4, 2B, HR, 2RBI).

#20 3B Richard Lucas

Why Ranked Here: I liked Lucas? strength and ability to use the whole field at the plate.? I thought he had a chance to stay at third.

What Happened: The Mets skipped the 21-year old Lucas, coming off a good year in Kingsport, and a so-so few weeks in the NYP, over Savannah (where Jefry Marte was holding down the hot corner) to St. Lucie, where's he's struggled.? He just hasn't made enough contact in the FSL.? However, his ten home runs are good enough for fifth in the League, so he?s hit for some power.? Now, can he make more contact in the second half?

Stock: Down.

Rookie (APP): Kingsport Mets 2, @ Bristol White Sox 1 (7 innings)

RHP Eduardo Aldama (5-0, 3.70 - pictured) held the Sox to one run on three hits in five innings while fanning six.

The 19-year-old Aldama's been one of the nicest stories in the Mets system in August after a very rough July.? In July, Aldama owned a 7.17 ERA in 21.1 innings with 17 strikeouts against 14 walks.? Now, in August, Aldama sports? 1.82 ERA.? In 24.2 innings, he's allowed just 18 hits more impressively has struck out 27 batters against just three walks.? Entering the season, I had Aldama ranked #38 in the Mets system, but he'll surely rise up this winter. The picture of the skinny Aldama is from the 2008 season in the GCL.

It's time.? Actually, it's past time, but here we go on a mid-season review of my pre-season Top 41 Prospect Rankings for the 2009 season.? We'll be going through in groups of five, although this first review has an extra bonus as 36-41.? If I get 10 prospects done a day, we'll finish up next week, and unveil a new top 20 (in honor of Hojo) or 31 (for Piazza) or some other number for some other reason.? I'm open to suggestions.

ALL STATS IN THE TABLES ARE CURRENT AS OF JULY 1, 2009!!!
