Daniel Jones on New England loss 00:00:53
New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones reflects on his poor performance against the New England Patriots, knows he has to play better.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The fourth start of Eli Manning's career back in 2004 was an unmitigated disaster. He was lost that day against the Baltimore Ravens. He looked rattled, completing only four of his 18 passes. He threw two interceptions and was eventually benched.

On the train ride back to New Jersey that night, Manning had a long, heart-to-heart talk with offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, and the next day he met with Tom Coughlin to do the same. They figured out a way for him to get comfortable in the offense. They discussed the plays that worked best and the ones he liked to run.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - No one ever thought it was going to be easy for Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones.

OK, that's not true. A lot of people thought he was the elixir that was going to cure everything that ails the Giants. But the reality always was that once he was given Eli Manning's old job, the 2019 season became all about his growth and learning on the job.

So consider his encounter with Tom Brady on Thursday night another difficult learning experience for the 22-year-old. He threw three interceptions and struggled most of the night, going 15 of 31 for 161 yards in a 35-14 loss to the defending Super Bowl champs.

All eyes have been on Daniel Jones since he was named the Giants starting quarterback prior to their Week 3 matchup with the Buccaneers.

And while it's the on-field results that matter the most to Giants fans, Jones' pregame arrival videos have become a bit of a phenomenon, mainly because of the internet outcry concerning Jones' fashion sense.

So, without further ado, here is the definite power rankings of the rookie's arrival videos since being named the starting QB.

Prior to the Giants' game against the New England Patriots on Thursday night, the team waived quarterback Alex Tanney while promoting running back Austin Walter from the practice squad, according to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.

That means Eli Manning will be the Giants only other active quarterback, behind rookie Daniel Jones

Tanney, the 31-year-old journeyman QB, has played in just one NFL game since entering the league in 2012. He completed 10 of 14 passes for 99 yards and one touchdown for the Tennessee Titans in 2015.

Without either of its top two running backs available for Week 6's game against the New England Patriots, the New York Giants offense turns to third- and fourth-string players on the depth chart.

The injured Giants (2-3) get the undefeated Patriots (5-0) Thursday at 8:20 p.m. ET after the team ruled out starter Saquon Barkley (ankle) and backup Wayne Gallman (concussion) among four offensive players sidelined, throwing the next men up into the spotlight.

Those are Eli Penny and Jon Hilliman, who have ascended to the top of the rotation after they started their 2019 campaigns as afterthoughts behind the 2018 Offensive Rookie of the Year and a third-year Giant.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - This was a big test for rookie quarterback Daniel Jones, and he didn't exactly pass it. Against the first elite defense he's faced in his young career, this game proved he wasn't quite ready.

But it also proved something else important.

The Giants aren't quite ready yet, either.

Giants fall to 2-3 00:01:22
Pat Shurmur and Daniel Jones discuss the Giants inability to take advantage of opportunities throughout their loss to the Vikings

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - After a wonderful first two games as the starting quarterback of the Giants, Daniel Jones got a taste of what Eli Manning had to endure over most of the previous six years:

Life as a quarterback on a bad team.

There was pretty much nothing Jones could do with a depleted rushing attack behind him, a struggling offensive line in front of him, and a porous defense on the other side - all things that should feel very, very familiar to his current backup. He was 21 of 38 for 182 yards, which isn't exactly good, but also was about what was expected considering he was making his third NFL start and was facing the NFL's sixth-ranked defense (and maybe the league's best secondary).

Giants running back Wayne Gallman was taken into the locker room during Sunday's matchup with the Vikings to be evaluated for a concussion. SNY's Ralph Vacchiano has reported and confirmed that Gallman will be out for the remainder of the game with a concussion.

Gallman was shaken up after a run in the first quarter and walked off the field slowly before heading back into the locker room. Gallman carryed the ball twice for 14 yards before leaving the game.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Giants have made themselves relevant again with a modest two-game winning streak that has left them one game out of first place, and in the thick of the Wild Card chase one quarter of the way through the season. They have an exciting young quarterback, lots of confidence, and a little bit of momentum.

But is it all just too good to be true?

The next 10 days will tell that story, as the Giants enter a difficult and critical stretch of their season. On Sunday, they face the Minnesota Vikings (2-2), owners of the sixth-best defense in the NFL. Four days later, they travel to New England (4-0) to face a Patriots defense that ranks No. 1. Those are two legitimate playoff contenders with defenses that quarterback Daniel Jones will find hard to decipher.

After the Giants switched from veteran Eli Manning to rookie Daniel Jones, the Redskins did the same move at quarterback in Week 4.

But Washington's decision to swap out veteran Case Keenum for rookie Dwayne Haskins at the 6:35 mark of the second quarter made no difference. Jones outperformed both signal callers Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where the Giants (2-2) handled the Redskins (0-4) 24-3.

Keenum completed 6 of 11 passes (54.5 percent) for 37 yards and an interception, following an 0-3 start in which the Redskins' offense has struggled, leading sixth-year head coach Jay Gruden to go with Haskins.

At running back, the Giants needed all hands on deck for Week 4's pivotal matchup against the Redskins.

Without second-year starter Saquon Barkley, who suffered an ankle injury last Sunday during Week 3's 32-31 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New York turned to several next men up with Washington on deck.

Led by third-year pro Wayne Gallman, three running backs answered the call as the Giants (2-2) took care of business against the winless Redskins (0-4) with Sunday's 24-3 win at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning will always share a special connection, with the pair teaming up to win two Super Bowls for the Giants.

So when the team decided that Manning would be heading to the bench in favor of rookie Daniel Jones, head coach Pat Shurmur went as far as to reach out to Coughlin to inform him of the team's decision before it was ultimately announced.

"Pat Shurmur actually said to me 'He's your guy and I wanted you to know that I had a very difficult thing today,' and I told Pat 'Yeah, he is my guy and he'll always be my guy,'" Coughlin told ESPN's Jordan Raanan at Coughlin's 15th annual Champions for Children Gala, benefiting his Jay Fund.

When the Giants drafted WR Darius Slayton in the fifth round of this year's NFL Draft, the Auburn product knew he was going to head into rookie minicamp with the team's first-round pick in QB Daniel Jones

But, like the rest of us, Slayton wasn't really sure what to think about him. Talking at length with TMZ Sports, Slayton admitted that he was skeptical of Jones' abilities when they got on the Giants practice field for the first time.

That is until he started to sling the pigskin...

Jones on taking next steps 00:01:42
New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones discusses how he can improve and his confidence in Wayne Gallman replacing Saquon Barkley.

Daniel Jones now has one regular season start under his belt, and it was definitely a step in the right direction for his NFL career. Jones became the first rookie quarterback with 300+ passing yards, two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns in a single game.

That's everything the Giants could've asked for and more. But Jones isn't going to just settle for the one game. He has many more ahead, and he's looking to get even better.

Looking over his game tape, Jones knows there are a few things that he can change heading into the new week with the Redskins on the schedule for Sunday. However, there is one main thing that he pointed out during his presser on Wednesday.

Brett Favre knows all too well how Eli Manning is feeling right now.

The Hall of Famer was in his position when the Packers ushered in Aaron Rodgers as their new franchise quarterback back in 2008. Favre had spent 16 seasons under center for Green Bay, leading the way to a Super Bowl victory in 1996 during that span.

That's almost the same exact time as Manning, who is currently in his 16th season with the Giants. But Favre was traded to the Jets in '08, while Manning is currently sitting behind Jones as his backup. It's all new to Manning, but speaking on his SiriusXM NFL Radio show, Favre said this thought must have, or will, cross Manning's mind soon.

Well, with that day coming and going with a Giants win, Ryan went back on "Get Up" Monday morning feeling confident. Enough so, that after watching Jones in just one game, he said this:

"Greeny, I hate to say it: This is the best quarterback in New York," Ryan said to host Mike Greenberg, a big Jets fan.

The Giants' fears were confirmed on Monday morning when they learned that Saquon Barkley will be out 6-8 weeks with a high ankle sprain. That is an enormous blow to their offense. Barkley is a weapon that simply can't be replaced.

But the Giants will have to try, because the only running back they have on their roster at the moment is Wayne Gallman, a fourth-round pick in the 2017 draft who is a solid pro, but nowhere near Barkley's class. Gallman will need help - more help than the Giants could get by running fullback Eli Penny more or promoting undrafted rookie John Hilliman off the practice squad.

Pat Shurmur has believed that Daniel Jones was the right quarterback for him and his offense since long before the Giants took him with the sixth overall pick in the draft. He's loved everything about him: His arm, his mobility, his unshakeable demeanor.

Now all Shurmur has to do is convince the Giants that he's the right coach for Jones.

So far, so good, of course, after the 22-year-old rookie's impressive debut in the Giants' come-from-behind, 32-31 win in Tampa on Sunday. Jones did everything anyone could have expected, throwing for 336 yards, making plays on the run, and running for two touchdowns too. And Shurmur seemed unleashed, running what might have been the most creative offensive scheme he's used in his 19 games in New York.

Giants QB Daniel Jones brought Big Blue back from the dead on Sunday against the Bucs in Tampa, helping to dig them out of a 28-10 hole before orchestrating a last-minute touchdown drive that turned out to be the difference.

So where does Jones' starting debut rank when it comes to other heralded quarterbacks the Giants drafted?

Phil Simms, No. 7 (1979 NFL Draft)

Simms made his first Giants start in Week 6 on Oct. 7, 1979 against the Bucs at the Meadowlands, but didn't get to throw much.

When Daniel Jones took off, Sterling Shepard knew.

The seven-yard touchdown scramble by Jones -- one of two Sunday for the rookie quarterback -- with 1:16 left in the fourth quarter completed the Week 3 comeback from down 18 points as the Giants pulled off the 32-31 win over the Buccaneers.

Shepard, who caught seven passes for 100 yards and a seven-yard touchdown pass to trim Tampa Bay's 28-25 lead, had the best seat in the house for the game-winning touchdown by Jones.

There was a moment in the second quarter when the mild-mannered, squeaky-clean rookie quarterback shocked his teammates with his mouth. He came roaring into the huddle, screaming at everyone, yelling, "Let's go f----ing score."

They loved it. And on that particular drive, they did.

But when the ultimate moment arrived, with the Giants down six and 75 yards and a little more than three minutes to go to victory, Daniel Jones took a different approach when he approached the huddle. He came out confident and calm, saying, "Let's go win this game, boys."

TAMPA -- It was a dazzling debut for Daniel Jones.

Just in case anyone still doubted the Giants knew what they were doing when they made the 22-year-old quarterback the sixth overall pick in the draft, he put on a clinic in his first NFL start on Sunday afternoon. He not only completed 23 of 36 passes for 336 yards and two touchdowns, but he engineered an Eli Manning-like, game-winning drive in the final 3 ½ minutes.

It ended on a 4th and 5 from the Bucs 7 when he dropped back, watched as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defense parted like a red sea around him, and he took off up the middle, untouched, for a touchdown that gave the Giants a 32-31 lead with 1:16 remaining.

After regular season-opening losses to the Dallas Cowboys (35-17, Sept. 8) and Buffalo Bills (28-14, Sept. 15) in which the offense's ineptitude plagued the team over the course of the first two games, the Giants put their future for 2019 and beyond into Daniel Jones when they face the Tampa Bay Bucanneers.

Ahead of Sunday's 4:05 p.m. kickoff from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, the Giants (0-2) turned to the rookie quarterback after second-year head coach Pat Shurmur named the No. 6 overall 2019 NFL draft pick the starter over 16th-year veteran Eli Manning.

While the Giants' move from Manning to Jones assumes that the team has given up on its win-now mode and begun the rebuild, Shurmur emphasized Friday from Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, why the decision took place now.

As SNY's Ralph Vacchiano notes, though, Giants fans shouldn't expect it to always be a smooth ride with a rookie under center.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - When Eli Manning raised his last Super Bowl trophy on Feb. 5, 2012, he was at the top of his game. He had carried the Giants that season. He insisted he was "elite" and backed it up.

He had also just turned 31, right in a quarterback's prime, poised for some of the best years of his career.

Then the Giants went out and wasted it all.

Barkley reacts to Jones starting 00:01:28
Saquon Barkley reacts to the Giants starting Daniel Jones. He's excited for what it potentially means for him.

Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones, the Giants' last two first-round picks, will be on the field together for the first time in a regular season game on Sunday. The transition has been made from veteran Eli Manning to usher in this new era of Giants football.

"I guess you can say the future, but like I said, just more excited for him," Barkley told reporters on Thursday.

The dynamic running back has already proven his worth to the team and the rest of the league, winning Offensive Rookie of the Year last season while catapulting his name into the discussion of best running back in the NFL. It's only been one year, but you can say Barkley has already paid his dues and earned the respect of his teammates. There's a "C" on his chest for a reason.

Giants GM Dave Gettleman stayed mum as his team made the franchise-altering switch from Eli Manning to Daniel Jones. But one of his former players -- who has bashed him before -- is back for more. And it has nothing to do with the Manning situation.

"No dignity at all," former Giant Landon Collins told Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media when discussing Gettleman getting rid of him after last season. "I didn't know what was going on. He's a liar. He lied to everybody. So that's a man I do not trust. I would hope nobody else would, too."

Collins added that Gettleman did not talk to him at all before his Giants tenure ended.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Eli Manning will go down as the greatest quarterback in Giants history, an icon of the franchise, and a symbol of their most recent championship era. It is a lock, obviously, that he will one day be placed in the Giants Ring of Honor.

But it is far from a lock that he will end up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

He may have a Hall of Fame-caliber resume: two championship rings and gaudy career statistics that rank him in the NFL's Top 10 of all-time. But he is not viewed universally as a sure-fire Hall of Famer. Among the 48 voters who will eventually decide his fate, there is considerable doubt that could even derail his candidacy completely.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Giants believed they had a chance to be a playoff contender this season, and they made a huge bet that Eli Manning could be the one to lead them there. GM Dave Gettleman believed he could do it with a better offensive line in front of him. Pat Shurmur said multiple times he thought Manning had "years" left in his stellar career.

They were so sure that they brought Manning back despite an $11.5 million salary, a $5 million roster bonus, and the fact that he would cost them $23.2 million under the NFL's salary cap.

What a colossal waste of money that turned out to be.

Jones on being named Giants QB 00:01:49
New York Giants new starting quarterback Daniel Jones discusses his new promotion and what he's learned from former starter Eli Manning

For the first time in his NFL career, Daniel Jones walked up to the podium on Wednesday afternoon as the starting quarterback of the New York Giants.

Head coach Pat Shurmur made the move from Eli Manning to Jones after just two games, with the Giants falling quickly to 0-2. The torch is now passed to the young Duke product the team drafted No. 6 overall, and he stood confidently on that podium to say he's ready for the opportunity.

"I'm ready to embrace it," Jones told reporters when asked about the responsibility of being the Giants' starting quarterback. "I think focusing on what we're doing here, focusing on what we're doing in the building in the preparation with my teammates and coaches. To be here in the moment, this week is important with that. Certainly feel like I can embrace that and looking forward to the opportunity."

"I'm just taking it day by day and figuring out how to run the scout team," Manning said when asked point blank if he would waive his no-trade clause.

Giants QB Eli Manning was relatively stoic while speaking to reporters for roughly six minutes on Wednesday morning -- one day after being replaced as the starter by Daniel Jones.

On his reaction to the news and how things ended up:

"You can wish all you want. That's not the way it played out. In some ways, I signed up for this knowing when you draft a young quarterback, this can happen. ... Knew it was a possibility. The official announcement came Tuesday via the Giants' Twitter account that Jones was being named the starter this week, and Shurmur said that it was a decision he told both parties about before getting right back to his weekly routine.

"I talked to all the parties involved yesterday morning and then I quickly got back to work," Shurmur said.

As rookie quarterback Daniel Jones takes over the Giants' offense for 17th-year veteran Eli Manning, a decision announced Tuesday by New York, the crosstown starter has an idea of what the transition will be like.

Just last year, fresh off the Jets making him the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Sam Darnold ascended to the top of the depth chart and began his rookie season with the Jets as the team's starter.

Now in his second year with New York while he works back from mononucleosis, Darnold understands that the news can be tough for Manning to process, but the development should only help Jones as the Giants move forward.

There has been quarterback carnage all around the NFL early this season and plenty of teams that probably could use a veteran like Eli Manning if he were available.

But Manning has a full no-trade clause in his contract, and according to multiple sources he has no immediate plans to waive it.

At least not yet.

While Giants head coach Pat Shurmur opened the door on Monday for Daniel Jones to replace Eli Manning as the starting quarterback sooner rather than later, the team's announcement on Twitter on Tuesday morning was still shocking to see.

The Eli Manning Era is over, as he will be the backup to Jones in Week 3 on Sunday when the Giants take on the Bucs in Tampa.

But why now? Here are three reasons why the Giants might have chosen this exact moment to make the change...

When the Giants made their last big, permanent quarterback switch 15 years ago, Kurt Warner didn't see it coming. He wasn't happy. He thought he had more time. He was sure he was still the Giants best quarterback.

But as soon as they told him he was being benched for a young Eli Manning nine games into the 2004 season, Warner made it clear to the Giants they should never put him back in.

He knew then what Pat Shurmur needs to know now: Once a move this big is made, there's no turning back. No matter what happens over the next 14 games, no matter how much Jones may struggle, no matter how many losses pile up, Daniel Jones is the Giants quarterback and it has to stay that way.

Giants rookie QB Daniel Jones has been named the starter for Week 3 in Tampa, meaning the Eli Manning Era is officially over in New York. So what's next?

Manning's days with the Giants may be done under center, but that doesn't mean he can't find playing time elsewhere. There are a few quarterback-needy teams out there that could look to add the veteran signal caller.

Now Manning does have the ball in his court with a no-trade clause, so the Giants can't simply get rid of him. Nor would they considering what he has meant to the franchise for the past 16 years.

Vacchiano talks Daniel Jones 00:01:55
SNY NFL Insider Ralph Vacchiano reacts to Daniel Jones being named starting QB for the Giants, and looks at why they made the move now.

The Giants have named Daniel Jones their starting quarterback, the team announced Tuesday morning on Twitter.

"Eli (Manning) and I spoke this morning," Shurmur said in a release issued by the team. "I told him that we are making a change and going with Daniel as the starter. I also talked to Daniel. Eli was obviously disappointed, as you would expect, but he said he would be what he has always been, a good teammate, and continue to prepare to help this team win games. Daniel understands the challenge at hand, and he will be ready to play on Sunday."

With the Giants 0-2, Shurmur explained why now was the right time for the move.

If the Giants are looking for the perfect spot to make the switch and give 22-year-old Daniel Jones his first NFL start, this isn't it.

But there are ideal windows coming soon.

Now, the Giants may decide that the situation doesn't matter or they may feel like they don't have a choice. They may decide to name Jones their starting quarterback for this Sunday's game in Tampa Bay, even if the situation isn't ideal. The reality is that teams can't always choose a perfect spot for a rookie quarterback to make his debut.

The Giants waived RB Paul Perkins on Monday, in order to make room for rookie TE Kaden Smith, who was claimed off waivers after being let go by the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday.

Perkins, a former fifth-round pick in the 2016 draft by the Giants, had previously been inactive for New York in both games to start the season, and missed all of the 2018 season on the reserve/non-injury list after tearing his pectoral muscle last offseason.

The UCLA product played a total of 25 games for the Giants, racking up 546 rushing yards on 153 attempts (3.6 YPA) and another 208 receiving yards on 23 catches.

Before the regular season began, Odell Beckham Jr. made headlines in late August when his wide-ranging interview with Sports Illustrated went viral.

The former Giants wide receiver told Ben Baskin of SI that New York sent him to the Browns "to die," setting off his latest disgruntled comments about his team from 2014-18.

Prior to Week 2's 8:15 p.m. kickoff against the New York Jets on ESPN, Beckham further explained those words in an interview aired during the Monday Night Football pregame show with Randy Moss.

Eli addresses starting status 00:00:53
With the Giants at 0-2, Pat Shurmur and Eli Manning acknowledge the questions surrounding the starting status of Eli under center.

After saying following Sunday's loss that Eli Manning's status as the starting quarterback wasn't in question heading into Week 3 against the Bucs, Giants head coach Pat Shurmur made a stunning 180 on Monday afternoon.

"We're gonna talk about everything moving forward. I think that's fair at this point," Shurmur said. "To this point what we've done hasn't been good enough."

Shurmur added that he understood what his comments would cause when it comes to media and fan reaction.

The Eli Manning Era is over, whether the Giants are ready to make it official or not.

It came to an end on Monday morning when Pat Shurmur reversed course and flung open the door he had been trying so hard to keep closed. Just 20 hours after he said it wasn't time to have the conversation, he decided "it's fair" to now talk about benching the 38-year-old Manning in favor of 22-year-old rookie quarterback Daniel Jones.

At that moment, Manning was done. Only the final arrangements need to be ironed out.

After the Giants dropped their first two games of the season, head coach Pat Shurmur told reporters Monday that the team will be looking at everything to make the proper changes to grab a win in Week 3.

And that includes the quarterback position.

When asked if Eli Manning will be the starter still this week, Shurmur wouldn't commit to his veteran quarterback.

Eli Manning and the Giants suffered yet another loss on Sunday against the Bills, moving their season quickly to 0-2.

But the loss also moved Manning's career record to a number he probably doesn't want to see.

Manning is now 116-116, a .500 career record. That means next week against the Bucs on the road, Manning could dip under that mark and own a losing record for his career.
