Right before the Olympic Break, Marty Biron spoke about a change that Henrik Lundqvist made with his equipment in early December.

Biron said, "Henrik and I used to talk about our gear a lot and a few months ago he decided to go with a lot lighter pads, it's a prototype that Bauer has got, they made it right for him and when I saw his equipment at Yankee Stadium and picked them up it seemed like it was at least a pound and a half lighter than the gear before. I saw something in his game that he was a lot faster and a lot quicker and it has turned around his game since the equipment change."

Lundqvist switched to a Bauer prototype named OD1N that are 1/3 lighter than any other "elite level pad." (InGoal Mag)

In an article at Yahoo, Nick Cotsonika spoke with a long-time equipment manager who said that having a visor attached to his helmet could have made Marc Staal's injury worse.

The equipment manager said that the puck that hit Staal was coming at such a speed that it would have broken the visor and pieces of it could have hit his eye.

In conversation with the equipment manager, Cotsonika writes that visors are worn and designed to protect players from errant sticks and not "designed to stop slapshots fired from high-tech sticks at high speed, especially when the puck hits a player straight on. They break, and when they break, they have sharp edges."

Marian Gaborik, Brad Richards, Michael Del Zotto, Derek Stepan, Wojtek Wolski, Ryan McDonagh, Ryan Callahan, Michael Sauer, Artem Anisimov, Steve Eminger and Erik Christensen all wear visors for the Rangers.

One player, Brandon Dubinsky, told Larry Brooks in the NY Post that visors are not in his plans:

?You know, one of the most fun things about the NHL was getting to take my visor off,? Dubinsky told Slap Shots on Friday. ?One of things I looked most forward to about playing in the NHL was that I could take my visor off and now that I?m here, there?s no way I?d want to go back and have to put one on.

In the Calgary Sun, Eric Francis writes that a bunch of teams are now wearing clear plastic skate protectors.

Teams like Toronto, Pittsburgh, Minnesota and Calgary wear them.

Players who wear them say they don?t notice them at all until they help cushion the blow of a blocked shot.
Why Ryan Callahan wasn't the first player to have one of these is beyond me. Him, Dan Girardi, all the penalty killers, and probably everyone, should wear them, especially if they aren't noticeable to the skater.

At Ranger Rants, Andrew Gross spoke with Henrik Lundqvist about the different kinds of gloves he has used through the years.

Hank says that when he came to the NHL he used a stiff glove primarily as a second blocker:

?It was like a double blocker,? Lundqvist said. ?I could catch some pucks but mostly I used it like a blocker.?
Lundqvist switched to a softer and more flexible glove two seasons ago.

There isn?t an organization in the NHL with a training staff and medical staff more committed to protecting the safety of its players than the Rangers. There?s not a chance in the world that the team is now or ever was reckless with Marc Staal. None.

Larry Brooks in the NY Post

I have felt for a long time that the two most underrated things about the Rangers were trainer Jim Ramsey and goalie coach Benoit Allaire. Both do so much to help the team win.

Update: 3:28PM: Steve Zipay says that the Rangers have confirmed that they will wear a sticker on their helmet for? Derek Boogaard.

Original Post: 9/15/11: 1:36PM: Darren Dreger of TSN said that the Rangers will wear a helmet decal for Derek Boogaard this season.

A nice move by the Rangers to honor Derek. Probably a 94 in a white or blue circle on the back of the helmet.
