Yankees defeat Mets 4-2 in Bronx 00:01:59
SNY's Sweeny Murti reports from Yankee Stadium where the Yankees defeated the Mets 4-2 in the first game of their four-game Subway Series.

Aaron Hicks, Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez each hit solo home runs to power the New York Yankees to a 4-2 win over the Mets on Monday at Yankee Stadium. >> Box score

With the game tied at 2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Hicks crushed Hansel Robles' 1-1 fastball to deep right field to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead. Sanchez added an insurance run later in the inning with a solo home run off Erik Goeddel.

The Yankees trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Judge slugged his American League-leading 36th home run of the season, his second in the month of August, to tie the game.

Mets reliever Erik Goeddel had off-season surgery to remove a bone spur in his pitching elbow, he told MLB.com's Anthony DiComo on Tuesday in St. Lucie.

According to Goeddel, the bone spur caused him periodic pain throughout last season.

In 36 appearances (35 2/3 innings) for the Mets last season, Goeddel, 28, was 2-2 with a 4.54 ERA (4.21 FIP) and 1.31 WHIP while striking out 36 batters.

The Mets have activated reliever Jim Henderson off the disabled list and have sent Erik Goeddel to Triple-A Las Vegas, Terry Collins told reporters Saturday.

Henderson was originally placed on the DL on June 19 with right bicep tendonitis but faced a setback in July when he suffered from a hamstring injury. After restarting his rehab assignment, Henderson pitched with Single-A St. Lucie and Las Vegas.

Henderson, a non-roster invitee to spring training, was 1-2 with a 4.26 ERA in 25 1/3 innings before landing on the disabled list.

The Mets discussed making a roster move in the bullpen, but ultimately decided against it, Terry Collins said before Friday's game.

Kristie Ackert of the Daily News said earlier in the day that Triple-A relievers Sean Gilmartin and Erik Goeddel were on their way to potentially join the team in New York. However, only one of them would have been activated, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

Gilmartin was sent to Triple-A Las Vegas just three days ago, so the Mets would need to place another player on the disabled list in order to activate him.

New York Mets RHP Erik Goeddel is close to returning to the mound sooner rather than later after suffering a lat strain, according to ESPN New York's Adam Rubin.

Goeddel, 27, began throwing on flat ground a week ago and threw from 120 feet on Wednesday. He expects to long toss twice more. He is likely to throw from the mound this weekend, according to the New York Post's Mike Puma.

He was cleared by a doctor a week ago, according to the New York Daily News' Kristie Ackert.

In 35 relief outings last season, Goeddel, 27, went 1-1 with a 2.43 ERA.

- STEP Camp, for the Mets top prospect began over the weekend. The full roster is here. In the last two years, every starter on a full-season team on Opening Day attended either MLB camp or STEP Camp.

- At ESPNNY, Adam Rubin reports that Erik Goeddel will be transitioning to a bullpen role. This is not a surprise. In fact, when I ranked him as the Mets' 33rd-best prospect, I had already factored in a move to the bullpen into his valuation.

- At Fangraphs, Jeff Sullivan did a great piece about Juan Lagares and how much outfield defense shifts in value year-over-year. He found range rankings are more stable than arm ratings, where Juan Lagares excelled last season.

This group of four Mets prospects are all likely to get to the big leagues, but are unlikely to ever be average regulars. Instead, if they make it, it will be in part-time roles, or as middle relievers. All four are 2010 or 2011 college draftees so it's time for them to produce in the big leagues. All have dealt with injuries on their way through the minors.

Last night, the Mets announced that they had added four pitchers, three righties and a lefty, to their 40-man roster in advance of the Major League Baseball Rule 5 draft. The team now has 40 players on the 40-man roster. They will have to trim a few spots if they plan to be active in the Rule 5 draft.

I wrote about LHP Matz, RHP deGrom and RHP Walters yesterday. Walters and ?deGrom have a chance to contribute to the Mets by the middle of 2014. Matz, the lone lefty in the group, and the lone a-baller, is the best left-handed prospect in the organization right now. He's a little further away, but could be up by as soon as 2015.

Goeddel is the moderate surprise to me. In fact, I left him off my list of potential roster additions yesterday. I thought about adding him, but considered him too much of a long shot. Ooops.

AA:?Binghamton Mets 3, @ Portland Sea Dogs (BOS) 0?

Something common: Cesar Puello (.338/.407/.616 - 58 games) hit. The 22-year-old was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Something uncommon: he played centerfield for the second straight night and the third time this year. In part, Puello has played center because the B-Mets' other two options Alonzo Harris (concussion) and Darrell Ceciliani (unclear) missed the last two games. Puello has mostly played right in his minor league career, but played center about a third of the time in 2012 in advanced-A St. Lucie. Obviously, his value goes up if he can handle centerfield, even in a fill-in role.

What is Puello doing in AA? My theory is that 1. the Mets are allowing him to consolidate his skill gains and 2. allowing him to participate in the Double-A All Star Game. The All-Star Game is July 10. Puello deserves to start in the game. In the last few years, the Mets have rewarded their players who earn All-Star Game recognition, and then, when circumstances allow, promoted them after the game. I suspect that this will be the case with Puello.

AA: Binghamton Mets 8, @ New Britain Rock Cats (MIN) 3?

The B-Mets scored four times in the fourth against hard-throwing Alex Meyer and that was enough Wednesday on a night when four different B-Mets collected multiple hits.

RHP?Erik Goeddel survived into the sixth inning, but a 1:1 strikeout to walk ratio is far from ideal: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K. For the year, Goeddel's at 45 K/20 BB in 46.1 innings with a 5.05 ERA and 51 hits in 46.1 innings. This might be the wall on his path as a starter. He gave up over a hit an inning last year in St. Lucie with a similar K/BB ratio a little over 2.

AA: @ New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5, Binghamton Mets 2?

Erik Goeddel was hittable on a night when the wind was blowing 20 mph out to left field if the box score is accurate. Goeddel's line: 4.1 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 2 HR. He was in the strike zone plenty, throwing 65% of his pitches (57 of 88) for strikes, but he was hurt in the zone. Versus his 2012 performance in advanced-A St. Lucie, his strikeout rate is up a little, his walk rate is down a little, but he's been hurt on contact. His BABIP has risen from .334 a year ago to .375 this year and his opponents' isolated slugging is up from .079 to .160. In part, this is a reflection of allowing two homers in a game Friday - half the number he allowed in 22 games in 2012 at a point in the season where everything is still subject to small sample size warnings. But you know, that happened.

The B-Mets had six hits, no one had more than one, and five of the six were singles. RF Cory Vaughn (pictured)?did hit his second homer of the year. The soon-to-be 24-year-old is hitting .277/.358/.489 in his first 13 games in AA.

Erik Goeddel: 4.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 7 K.

- Strikeouts good. Walks, bad. Goeddel walked two batters in the first and two in the second. After his second inning walks, he settled in and retired 10 in a row. According the B-Mets radio broadcast, he hit 94 with his fastball. Goeddel stands out to me as the top guy who really belonged in my Top 41 rankings, but who I left off. He has a better arm (fastball) than most of the pitchers in the back half of the list, and a sharp slider than. He had a solid, if not spectacular year in advanced-A in 2012. So, yeah, my bad. I don't know that he has enough command consistently to start, but he has the arm and slider to pitch out of bullpen.

The star of the game is an easy call. RHP Erik Goeddel: 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K. The seven innings and eight strikeouts were both season-highs. At times, scouts have had nice things to say about his curveball and slider and fastball at 89-92. However, the results have not been there for the 23-year old. This is not just a step in the right direction, but a leap to suggest he's figured something out. Now, he just has to do it again.

RHP Erik Goeddel (pictured)?made his first start of the year and his second appearance overall and was really good: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. Goeddel, who the Mets went overslot to sign in the 24th round in 2010, was really good for Savannah in the first half in 2011, missed over two months with shoulder issue, and did not look like the same guy when he returned in August.

Some Mets guys have not been assigned to any particular roster.

In Erik Goeddel's case, he has a groin strain. I labeled him as one of the two Mets with the most to prove in St. Lucie in 2011, starting with the fact that he needed to prove he can stay healthy. The good news here is that for a guy who's had Tommy John surgery in college, and elbow and shoulder soreness as a professional that have kept him off the field in the last two years, it's a leg thing this time.

Kyle Allen appears healthy. He's throwing bullpens and traveling with St. Lucie, but is not on the active roster. I did not rank Allen in my Top 41 this year for the first time since 2009, as he's stalled at advanced-A. In 2010 and 2011 in 207.1 IP with St. Lucie in 47 games and 39 starts he's given up 237 hits, fanned 5.5 guys per nine and walked 4.9 per nine. I had him ranked highest at?#13 in the system in 2010, #29 a year ago and #33 back in 2009. At this point, it seems the Mets are just more interested in giving innings in St. Lucie to other guys who have spent less, (or no) time in advanced-A.

I had Goeddel ranked #33 in this year's Top 41 Mets prospects. He was outstanding in May in Savannah in 2011, working in the low 90s as part of a four-pitch arsenal. On some nights his slider looked like a big league offering. A sore shoulder sidelined him in June and July and he struggled to find his feel when he returned. He looks headed for St. Lucie to begin the year.
