ESPN?s award-winning newsmagazine program E:60 examines the metamorphosis of New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin in the episode airing tonight, Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Winless and at the bottom of the NFC East, with the franchise?s worst start since 1976, is not where Coughlin imagined he would be after half-a-dozen games. But what might be even more surprising is that no one in the ?what-have-you-done-for-me-lately? New York sports universe is calling for Coughlin?s head. His players defend him, fans still respect him and the often-brutal New York media has cut Coughlin some slack.

NEW YORK ? Before the Knicks and Nets did battle for the fourth time on Monday, I had the opportunity to catch up with ESPN's Stephen A. Smith.

I asked Mr. Smith his thoughts on the Brooklyn Nets as they approach the midpoint of the season.

It's been fifteen years since the infamous "Latrell Sprewell incident" occurred and changed Brooklyn's interim coach P.J. Carlesimo's coaching career.? Carlesimo has made a few stops since the incident transpired ?and also won a few rings with the San Antonio Spurs as an assistant coach.

But being an NBA head coach is a special position and Carlesimo is trying to put the Golden Sate incident behind him once and for all.

For most of yesterday afternoon, it looked like the NFC East was in for a losing day. Dallas trailed the Bengals in Cincinnati for the majority of their game. Washington was eight points down to the Ravens with less than a minute to go without RGIII. The Eagles were losing 21-10 in Tampa with four minutes remaining.

All three ended up coming back and winning, putting more pressure on the Giants in their game vs New Orleans last night. The Giants won, also, fending off any designs the Cowboys and Redskins had on tying them for first place this week. But the pressure is clearly on.

With the Giants clutching to a one-game lead, the crew at ESPN debated the Giants' chances of holding on and winning the NFC East this season.

Giants' WR Victor Cruz, who beat the Redskins earlier this year with a 77-yard TD catch, told reporters yesterday that Washington was a "still a few pieces away" from being a contender.

While Cruz' words may ring accurate - the Redskins are a rising team that is only a few players away - is it wise for him to be making comments such as these the week of the game? A game Tom Coughlin has called the most important of the season?

Here's what was said:

It's never too early to be concerned about the Giants. It's never too late, either. Their offense the past two games has been anemic compared to the first seven weeks. They won last week, and you would not get an argument if you called them lucky. Yesterday, they got some luck, but sometimes that's not good enough to beat a quality team like Pittsburgh.

The defense has been giving up big plays for years, so Isaac Redman and Mike Wallace knifing through them was no surprise. The special teams had been solid up until the past two games. The kick coverage has been very lax.

But the offense is what has everybody concerned. 11 first downs last week. Only 13 this week. Very few big plays. For a team that relies on their vertical passing game to carry them, they are treading on dangerous ground.

Brooklyn Nets general manager Billy King confirmed Thursday that an MRI revealed point guard Deron Williams has bone spurs in his left ankle and probably will have to undergo offseason surgery to have them "cleaned up."

However, King downplayed the results and expects the injury to be "manageable."

I'm not into advocating for on-air personalities from rival networks, but ESPN's Colin Cowherd is as in tune with what is happening in sports and sports culture than probably anyone else on the air today. If you're not following him either live (10-1 each morning) or via podcast, I suggest you start.

Each week, Cowherd discloses his Herd Hierarchy on the NFL. This week, he has the Giants on top, with everyone else in the distance.....

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was interviewed on The Michael Kay Show on 98.7 ESPN NY Radio in Albany this week:

This is the second time you go into training camp as the defending Super Bowl Champion. What are the differences? Similarities?

?Here?s the thing. We don?t talk about defending. We don?t talk about those types of things. What we talk about is our goal: to win the world championship. That?s it. What we would really like to do as I mentioned is we would like to carry over from the six games at the end of the 2011-12 season into this season.

Tim Tebow is in New York and the media is falling over themselves to get to him. In the wake of it all, stands the Super Bowl champion Giants, who prefer to be left alone so they can get down to business.

"I don't want ESPN camped out here and us doing interviews here, doing all that stuff," Eli Manning told USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday. "(Quiet) is the way we like it. There's good attention and bad attention. Right now, training camp is about football, getting away from all the distractions and worrying about your team coming together and playing at a high level."

But is there a tad of jealousy running throughout the Giants? Should there be? The ESPN coverage of the NY market by ESPN has been so lopsided, they jettisoned a camera crew to Albany yesterday in an attempt to even things out.

Giant fans can take comfort in the fact that the "experts" deem them as one of the league's top franchises - not only today but for the foreseeable future.

An ESPN panel (Mel Kiper, Trent Dilfer, Gary Horton, Matt Williamson and Bill Polian) ranked all 32 NFL teams in five categories - roster, quarterback, draft, front office and coaching staff - and weighed each team's four-year outlook accordingly.

The Giants finished third behind the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots. Here is the full list per businessinsider.com:

If you had pulled me aside last June, and said to me that the New York Football Giants would be playing in the Divisional Round of the playoffs, I quite possibly would have slapped you.

After the physical reinforcement, I?d have told you that there was a better chance of seeing Wellington Mara?s granddaughter in a string of explicit, full frontal sex scenes.

And now, one Dragon Tattoo movie later, here we are. But we?ve already looked at the Falcons game. In my humble yet awesome opinion it is a bit too early to start dissecting the Packers. So to what do you owe the pleasure of this Bonus ?Bad Guy?? Oh, there is plenty to discuss.

Former Giants defensive captain Antonio Pierce was critical towards his old team's decision to hold Brandon Jacobs and Justin Tuck out of yesterday's game.

"To me if you don't have an injury that needs surgery, or that's severe, you need to be out there," Pierce said on ESPN Radio this morning. "I don't really know and I don't want to question guys but if you are one of the leaders on the team, which Brandon Jacobs and Justin Tuck are, and you say you know what, the Seattle Seahawks, maybe we don't need to play this game and you miss out, that is what's going to come back to bite you in the tail."

Tuck was unmoved by the criticism: "Tell Antonio he knows my cell phone number, if he has anything to say about me, about how I play the game."

Giants QB Eli Manning was on ESPN Radio today with Michael Kay and shot back at this critics about his performance.

"I'm not a 25-interception quarterback, I know that....that's going to be fixed and it should be a good year."He also chimed in on the debate about whether he is an elite QB or not:

"I consider myself in that class and Tom Brady is a great quarterback, he's a great player and what you've seen with him is he's gotten better every year and he started off winning championships and I think he's a better quarterback now than what he was, in all honesty, when he was winning those championships....It's funny, you say well he won championships, but the team, but I think know he's grown up and gotten better every year and that's what I'm trying to do. I kind of hope these next seven years of my quarterback days are my best."Listen:?Eli Manning on ESPN Radio

The Giants went 10-6 and missed the playoffs by a game.? They had the fifth best offense in the league and were ranked 7th overall in defense.?

So how did they miss the playoffs?

Very simple. They were a turnover machine.

Drop all of this nonsense about the Giants' replacing Tom Coughlin right now.

It ain't happenin.

If you watch the below video, ESPN's Adam Schefter explains that Giants' head coach is signed through 2012, not 2011 as previously thought.? If that is true (and Schefter is rarely offbase) it means the team does not have to make any decisions regarding Coughlin until at least the end of next season.

ESPN's Professor of All Things Football, our friend and colleague John Clayton, discusses what Eli Manning is doing different this year to keep his completion percentage from dropping in November and December.

Clayton believes Eli will inherently improve because his young receiving corps is coming into its own. He also cites that new QB coach Mike Sullivan (who was the WR coach last year) will help develop that realtionship a lot quicker.

The new stadium may bring a different weather dynamic to the equation as well.
