The Islanders are tied for first in the Metropolitan Division, but ESPN's Peirre LeBrun had no problem placing the Islanders atop his weekly NHL power rankings and neither did The Hockey News.?

"This week in the Rankings I want to reward one of the NHL's most loyal fan bases with the top spot," LeBrun?wrote. " And why not? Their team deserves some love!"

The Islanders, without a doubt, deserve to be recognized for their effort so far. New York is coming off a sweep over NHL powerhouse, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and is holding an 8-2-0 record in the month of November.

Travis Hamonic is one of the many character guys in the Islanders locker room. That character was on display on Saturday when he quickly jumped in to defend teammate Frans Nielsen after a questionable hit by Steve Downie in the Isles 3-1 loss to Pittsburgh.

On the ice, Hamonic has become one of the best defenders in the NHL, but off the ice is?a world class person because of the experiences he has gone through in his life. At the age of 10 he?suffered one of the worst losses a kid can go through: the death of a parent.

ESPN?s award-winning newsmagazine program E:60 examines the metamorphosis of New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin in the episode airing tonight, Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Winless and at the bottom of the NFC East, with the franchise?s worst start since 1976, is not where Coughlin imagined he would be after half-a-dozen games. But what might be even more surprising is that no one in the ?what-have-you-done-for-me-lately? New York sports universe is calling for Coughlin?s head. His players defend him, fans still respect him and the often-brutal New York media has cut Coughlin some slack.

While the Giants are in the midst of OTAs, those who make the rules are pondering potential changes to the NFL schedule and playoffs.

Though nothing is imminent, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told ESPN at the spring owners meeting in Boston that both issues are currently being discussed.

Two games would be shaved off the preseason, and the regular season would become 18 games. The specifics about extended playoffs were not mentioned.

Blogging the bEast's Jimmy Kempski pinch-hit for me last night at the ESPN Draft Party. Below are some of his observations:

Alabama OT DJ Fluker is one of the most enormous people I?ve ever seen. If you put $10,000 on a table behind him, and said ?If you can get around this guy and get that money in less than 15 seconds, it?s yours, but you might get hurt by trying,? I think I?d just take a pass.

However, if the same offer were on the table for a smaller guy (relatively speaking) like Lane Johnson, I?d probably break my arm in the attempt, but I?d at least give it a shot. Then again, I?m not an NFL pass rusher with 4.6 speed who can bend and dip around the corner. That?s where Fluker?s struggles may eventually come from in the NFL. His footwork will have to improve, but the man has something you can?t teach? and that?s having 36 3/4? arms.

Actor and Islanders fan Kevin Connolly has been working on a documentary for ESPN on John Spano, the fraud who bought the Islanders in the mid-90s. The film was first announced back in August and is ready to premiere on April 19th at the Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival in New York City, according to the Hollywood Reporter:

[sny-box]The lineup includes the world premiere of Big Shot, directed by Kevin Connolly, will serve as the gala premiere April 19. Connolly is returning to Tribeca having debuted his feature, Gardener of Eden, in 2007.

Added Connelly: "I've always thought the expression ?passion project? was kind of a cliche until I started working on Big Shot for ESPN. Working side by side and spending time with guys that I literally grew up idolizing has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. In all the analyses hitting the airwaves and net this week regarding what went wrong with the Giants this season, the one glaring reason is the health of WR Hakeem Nicks. No argument here. Nicks' foot and knee injuries prevented him from running, cutting and just about everything else that makes him Hakeem Nicks.

Without Nicks, the Giant offense sputtered, taking away the big play element and reliable receiving option that QB Eli Manning had become accustomed to. Nicks' ineffectiveness due to injury allowed defenses to increase their focus on WR Victor Cruz, who was throttled often in big games.

As we all know, the Giants live and die by their vertical passing game. This year, they died.

In 2009, ESPN debuted its 30 for 30 sports documentary series which on the whole was an entertaining bit of television. Following that, ESPN plans to release more documentaries in the same style over the coming year(s?).

As we discussed a few months ago, Legendary Fraud John Spano is going to be a subject for one of the films. We got an email note from ESPN asking for fan submissions, which is passed on below. From the looks of it, it seems like the film may expand a bit and focus more on the Islanders as a whole as they're looking for historical footage, not just from the Spano era. Or maybe they just need some B roll.

For most of yesterday afternoon, it looked like the NFC East was in for a losing day. Dallas trailed the Bengals in Cincinnati for the majority of their game. Washington was eight points down to the Ravens with less than a minute to go without RGIII. The Eagles were losing 21-10 in Tampa with four minutes remaining.

All three ended up coming back and winning, putting more pressure on the Giants in their game vs New Orleans last night. The Giants won, also, fending off any designs the Cowboys and Redskins had on tying them for first place this week. But the pressure is clearly on.

With the Giants clutching to a one-game lead, the crew at ESPN debated the Giants' chances of holding on and winning the NFC East this season.

Sounds crazy, but maybe it's not. Is Eli Manning going through the "tired arm syndrome"? If he is, it could answer a lot of questions about why his performance has dipped over the past few weeks.

Even the best baseball pitchers get put on pitch counts. It's nothing to be ashamed of. Eli has played more games over the past nine years than any other QB in the NFL. He never misses a game or a practice. He is also holding offsite workouts with his receivers in the offseason.

In addition, he's coming off a 20-game season (the downside of making the Super Bowl as a wildcard) and has come firing right out of the gate again this season with an uneven schedule. The Giants also have not had their bye yet this year. ?So, yes, it's a possibility.

It's never too early to be concerned about the Giants. It's never too late, either. Their offense the past two games has been anemic compared to the first seven weeks. They won last week, and you would not get an argument if you called them lucky. Yesterday, they got some luck, but sometimes that's not good enough to beat a quality team like Pittsburgh.

The defense has been giving up big plays for years, so Isaac Redman and Mike Wallace knifing through them was no surprise. The special teams had been solid up until the past two games. The kick coverage has been very lax.

But the offense is what has everybody concerned. 11 first downs last week. Only 13 this week. Very few big plays. For a team that relies on their vertical passing game to carry them, they are treading on dangerous ground.

Tim Tebow is in New York and the media is falling over themselves to get to him. In the wake of it all, stands the Super Bowl champion Giants, who prefer to be left alone so they can get down to business.

There's good attention and bad attention. Right now, training camp is about football, getting away from all the distractions and worrying about your team coming together and playing at a high level."

But is there a tad of jealousy running throughout the Giants? Should there be? The ESPN coverage of the NY market by ESPN has been so lopsided, they jettisoned a camera crew to Albany yesterday in an attempt to even things out.
