There was hardly anyone left in the stands as the Rutgers band played the alma mater and the football players gathered in the end zone to celebrate a victory against Kansas on Saturday.

It was a ho-hum game against one of the worst teams in FBS, so it was hard to blame Scarlet Knights fans for being less than fired up about a 27-14 win.

The Giants are need of a win and the Redskins have always been there to provide them with one. That is, until now. The two teams seem to be going in opposite directions. The Giants, at 0-2, have been unable to close out games, while the Redskins have pounded the opponents on both sides of the ball so far this season.

I find it antithetical to the role of a journalist who should be neither seen nor heard. I've always attempted to stay out of the story at all costs and provide balance and perspective. I've failed at that at times, but that's the business.

UConn has won 5 games in two years and judging by the preview magazines, not much is expected from the Huskies. UConn has designs on a marked improvement from last year's 2-10 season. It's sorely needed. The outward of momentum that has carried the program its first decade is gone. The fan base is depressed in the AAC and the season ticket base has eroded from over 30,000 (mid 2000s) to ?a little over 21,000 last year. This year, with a home schedule that lacks marquee teams Navy and Army headliners), the driving force behind fan attendance will be the Huskies. UConn is going to be a better team than 2015. The second year of a new coach is always easier than the first and for the first time the group looks on the same page. But, the schedule is as difficult as UConn has had in its FBS history. UConn plays BYU, Missouri, UCF and Cincinnati on the road, all teams that could be ranked in the Top 25 at some point this season. ???

McQuillan was initially barred from classes from the school following a disciplinary hearing. Diaco said earlier in the week that McQuillan was appealing the ruling. The appeal apparently was denied and he is no longer in school. McQuillan did have enough credits and is a graduate of the university. The Civil Conflict won't go away. ?

I wrote a week ago about the Civil Conflict and how the game and idea originated in the football office at the University of Connecticut. We know that neither UConn's athletic department and more importantly UCF knew about the game and idea. This is a UConn football thing only and when football extends into public relations and marketing, it becomes a bad idea. What sounds good to an audience of 100 (football team) and is used to motivate them sounds, quite frankly, ridiculous to the masses.

At the very best, UConn and head coach Bob Diaco creating a trophy game for a rival is a college athletics faux pas. Football should do football. Let others handle outside the lines.

UConn had Geremy Davis taken in the sixth round on Saturday to the Giants, but the Huskies' NFL Draft add didn't end there.

The Eagles had contacted McBryde before the pro day at UConn, watched and talked to him for some time, and then nabbed him after the draft. McBryde was a little-used defensive tackle for most of his career but his size at 6-5 and at 310 pounds with his strength and speed make him a worthwhile development project.

The Huskies also had McBryde's roommate Ruben Frank land a chance as he'll have a tryout with Lions per Ross Jones of FOX.
