Frank Lampard scored his second goal of the match three minutes into stoppage time to give New York City FC a 3-2 victory over D.C. United on Thursday night.

Lampard took a pass from Khiry Shelton at the top of the area, faked a defender and goalkeeper Bill Hamid with the right, and slammed it home with the left. NYC improved to 12-8-8.

United (7-9-11) led 1-0 late, but NYC's David Villa scored in the 79th minute thanks to a crucial mistake by United defender Sean Franklin, whose back-pass fed Villa on a clean breakaway. In the 85th minute, after a physical scramble in the corner for a loose ball, Shelton pushed it to the center of the box. Villa tapped it to Lampard before getting hauled down, and Lampard buried it for the go-ahead.

Newly acquired midfielder Darwin Ceren will be available for the San Jose Earthquakes when they play host to New York City FC on Friday at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, Calif.

New York City (10-7-6) sits atop Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference standings with 36 points, three points ahead of second-place Toronto FC. San Jose (6-6-9) is eighth in the Western Conference with 27 points, two points behind the seventh-place Portland Timbers.

San Jose traded Matias Perez Garcia to Orlando City SC in exchange for Ceren just before the transfer window closed Wednesday. Earthquakes coach Dominic Kinnear said Ceren adds needed depth to a position that has been left thin at times this season due to injuries or suspensions to Fatai Alashe, Anibal Godoy and Marc Pelosi.

New York City FC and Toronto FC possess two of MLS' most accomplished scorers, though the supporting casts for both sides are garnering the most attention leading up to Wednesday's important match.

While rising New York City may finally have Frank Lampard back in the mix, the Reds won't have Jozy Altidore available when they attempt to earn an elusive first win in the series.

Toronto announced Monday that Altidore will miss 6 to 8 weeks with a Grade 2 right hamstring strain sustained in Saturday's 4-3 loss to Vancouver, a major blow to both the club and the U.S. national team with the injury likely to keep the key striker from participating in next month's Copa America tournament.

New head coach Patrick Vieira during New York City FC press conference at Yankee Stadium (Noah K. Murray)

NYCFC Head Coach Patrick Vieira spoke to the media on a conference call before the team's season begins on Sunday. Here's what he had to say…

  • He has no set goal for the season, but hopes the players and team play well and he'll see where that takes them.
  • He said the team had a strong preseason and the first game will be a great test of where they are as a team.
  • He has not decided on what lineup or formation he will use on Sunday. He said it will be hard for him to choose a starting 11 every game, especially because he has so much depth in the midfield.
  • He put a focus on the mental side of the game during the preseason, but stressed that "everything is important."
  • He said he has a very good relationship with Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo, which will help him decide when they will play and when they will sit.
  • He expects Jack Harrison to play this season, "much earlier than you think." Harrison, the first-overall pick in the MLS Draft, has been out since late January with a pelvic injury.
  • He believes the MLS is growing very well and will continue to see good growth in the league.
  • He said the salary cap is a major issue for the MLS, which hurts them as many players chase money to other leagues around the world, specifically China.

NYCFC takes on the Chicago Fire at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 6.
