The Islanders are moving in the right direction, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said on WFAN Tuesday afternoon.

"I think the Islanders' prospects are strong," he said during an interview with Mike Francesa. "They?re putting together a good, young team and they?re moving to a state-of-the-art arena. Even thought it wasn?t specifically designed for hockey it will certainly improve things for them and their fans."

The franchise is coming of its most successful offseason in quite some time. General Manager Garth Snow improved the Islanders at every position that had holes. He brought in goaltenders Jaroslav Halak and Chad Johnson to shore up goaltending. Snow added Nikolay Kulemin and Mikhail Grabovski to add more scoring, and traded for top-4 defenseman Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk.

In a deal which had the final touches completed just mere minutes before it was formally announced, the New Jersey Devils are now the property of a group headed by Joshua Harris and David Blitzer.

"I stand here today at Prudential Center with my friend, and fellow co-owner and partner David Blitzer to share with you the sense of excitement we have as the new owners of the New Jersey Devils," Harris said. "We look forward to building excellence on and off the ice for the fans, this city and the state of New Jersey. We have an incredible opportunity in front of us to revitalize this organization, we can rethink the way business is done and infuse the franchise with the resources and talent, both on the hockey and business side and the experience necessary to give the Devils a chance to achieve long-term growth and sustainability at an elite level."

On a sweltering, humid August afternoon from Yankee Stadium, it's usually all about balls and strikes, home runs and put-outs. But on Thursday, it was the NHL's turn to step up to the plate.

The NHL formally introduced the two upcoming Outdoor Series games to be played at Yankee Stadium in 2014. The first matchup features the New Jersey Devils against their cross-Hudson rival New York Rangers, on Saturday, January 26, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. The second game pits the Rangers against their other metropolitan-area rival, New York Islanders. That game will be played on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at 7:30 p.m.

Although the players wrapped up their electronic CBA voting process at 8 a.m., there's still be no word on the basically assured passed of the CBA. The NHLPA says that will come later Saturday when the sides finalize the Memorandum of Understanding.

Ilya Kovalchuk continues to hold out behind the red curtain. The Russian winger suited up for SKA St. Petersburg again Thursday, attempting to put a further scare into the Devils and the NHL. Neither party, at least publicly, appears concerned, but the general manager of Kovalchuk's KHL club isn't backing down.

Kasatonov, ironically a former Devil, is taking the only public stance he can. We're not buying the idea that Kovalchuk won't honor his NHL contract when push becomes a strongly worded shove from Gary Bettman and the IIHF. The only interesting part of this whole case will be whether Kovy really tries to play in Sunday's KHL ASG after the CBA has been ratified by his union and whether the NHL and/or the Devils decide to reprimand him.

After a four-month lockout, the NHL is going to have to win back the fans, both casual and die-hard alike. The players know this. Gary Bettman knows this. The fans know this. The last time around, the teams famously painted "Thank You Fans!" just inside each team's blue line. Somehow, such an exclamatory statement doesn't feel appropriate this time around -- although some of the artistic on-ice ideas from the Marek vs. Wyshysnki Podcast on Dec. 19 are downright hilarious. There will need to a concerted "outreach" and programs dedicated to recapturing some semblance of the NHL's pre-lockout momentum.

Gary Bettman declined to get into specific ideas or plans yesterday, but I want to know what YOU want and need from the league, its players and its teams to help bring you back to hockey and soothe the pain from the lockout. Sounds off in the comments!

Easily the funniest/creepiest thing to come out of Gary's presser yesterday...

Gary Bettman addressed the media after owners unanimously ratified the tentative CBA at Wednesday's Board of Governors meeting. Needless to say, he was non-committal when asked about players possibly violating their contracts by participating in the KHL All-Star game after the union (likely) approves the CBA on Saturday.

Consider it a not-so-subtle shot at the KHL and Russian officials. According to his agent, Pavel Datsyuk got clearance from the Red Wings to participate in the game, but we haven't seen anything close to that from the Devils or Kovalchuk's reps. Also, don't underestimate how much this situation ties into future negotiations regarding player participation in the Olympics. It's no secret how important the Sochi games are to Russian players and the NHL is obviously not above playing hardball if it's backed up against a wall by the KHL.

Pardon the FDR pun in the headline, but the owners have ratified the new CBA as expected, according to ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun.

LeBrun also notes that the players will electronically vote on the new CBA on Friday and Saturday, but that won't affect the timing of training camps opening Sunday.
