?The National Hockey League deeply mourns the passing of Al Arbour, revered head coach of the dynastic New York Islanders," Bettman said in a statement released by the league.
"I think the Islanders' prospects are strong," he said during an interview with Mike Francesa. "They?re putting together a good, young team and they?re moving to a state-of-the-art arena. Even thought it wasn?t specifically designed for hockey it will certainly improve things for them and their fans."
The franchise is coming of its most successful offseason in quite some time. General Manager Garth Snow improved the Islanders at every position that had holes. He brought in goaltenders Jaroslav Halak and Chad Johnson to shore up goaltending. Snow added Nikolay Kulemin and Mikhail Grabovski to add more scoring, and traded for top-4 defenseman Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk.

In a deal which had the final touches completed just mere minutes before it was formally announced, the New Jersey Devils are now the property of a group headed by Joshua Harris and David Blitzer.
"I stand here today at Prudential Center with my friend, and fellow co-owner and partner David Blitzer to share with you the sense of excitement we have as the new owners of the New Jersey Devils," Harris said. "We look forward to building excellence on and off the ice for the fans, this city and the state of New Jersey. We have an incredible opportunity in front of us to revitalize this organization, we can rethink the way business is done and infuse the franchise with the resources and talent, both on the hockey and business side and the experience necessary to give the Devils a chance to achieve long-term growth and sustainability at an elite level."

On a sweltering, humid August afternoon from Yankee Stadium, it's usually all about balls and strikes, home runs and put-outs. But on Thursday, it was the NHL's turn to step up to the plate.
The NHL formally introduced the two upcoming Outdoor Series games to be played at Yankee Stadium in 2014. The first matchup features the New Jersey Devils against their cross-Hudson rival New York Rangers, on Saturday, January 26, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. The second game pits the Rangers against their other metropolitan-area rival, New York Islanders. That game will be played on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at 7:30 p.m.

In an interview with Sportbox.ru, SKA GM Alexei Kasatonov says he will "do everything possible" to keep Ilya Kovalchuk in the KHL. #NJDevilsKasatonov, ironically a former Devil, is taking the only public stance he can. We're not buying the idea that Kovalchuk won't honor his NHL contract when push becomes a strongly worded shove from Gary Bettman and the IIHF. The only interesting part of this whole case will be whether Kovy really tries to play in Sunday's KHL ASG after the CBA has been ratified by his union and whether the NHL and/or the Devils decide to reprimand him.

Gary Bettman declined to get into specific ideas or plans yesterday, but I want to know what YOU want and need from the league, its players and its teams to help bring you back to hockey and soothe the pain from the lockout. Sounds off in the comments!

Bettman was asked if Kovy would be in violation if he played in KHL All-Star Game. "We'll deal with that if it happens."Consider it a not-so-subtle shot at the KHL and Russian officials. According to his agent, Pavel Datsyuk got clearance from the Red Wings to participate in the game, but we haven't seen anything close to that from the Devils or Kovalchuk's reps. Also, don't underestimate how much this situation ties into future negotiations regarding player participation in the Olympics. It's no secret how important the Sochi games are to Russian players and the NHL is obviously not above playing hardball if it's backed up against a wall by the KHL.
