From NFL Alumni...?

NFL Alumni Executive Director & President George Martin and the Alumni membership extend prayers and heartfelt sympathies to Sylvia and the Mackey family on the passing of our friend, John Mackey. We will remember John as a loving husband and father, a legendary player and a courageous pioneer who fought for improved pensions and benefits. The ?88 Plan?, named for the jersey number proudly worn by John, offers assistance for fellow dementia and ALS sufferers. John?s legacy transcends the hero he was to football fans, as he was an inspiration larger than could be contained on the field of play. As we mourn the loss, we celebrate the far reaching contributions Mackey made to the football community and beyond. ?

Reaction to the death of Andy Robustelli, the former Giants' defensive end and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, who passed away Tuesday morning at the age of 85:

"He was one of the greatest players in franchise history, and one of the finest, most dignified gentlemen you could ever meet. Andy was a man's man in every respect." (John Mara, Giants co-owner)

"Andy was a great leader. When he came to us from the Rams, it turned everything around defensively. He fit perfectly into Tom Landry's defense. Tom Landry was such a leader in putting defense into pro football and Andy was one of the key components of that.?He was far and away above the other defensive ends of his era. Andy was not all that big, but he was very quick. With Andy and Tom Landry, it was almost scary the anticipation that they had of what was going to be run. He and Tom were very, very close. Whereas Tom was the overall defensive coach, Andy basically ran the defensive line along with the linebackers. He was the leader. Everyone knew that. He was the leader in the clubhouse. He was quiet, but when Andy talked, everyone listened." (Frank Gifford, former teammate)

from our colleague Zach Berman of the Star Ledger...
Former Giant great and Ring of Honor inductee George Martin is holding his second annual ?Giant Steps for 9/11? Walk and Family Fun Day on Sunday to benefit the rescue and recovery workers.

"This year, we have a larger field of participants," said Martin, who expects between 300-400 people to walk. "We bring the awareness to many more people. The message is getting across that we want people to come out and have a fun time, and at the same time, help people who are less fortunate than themselves."

Pro Football Hall of Famer and All Stars Helping Kids Founder Ronnie Lott today announced that he will host the second annual Sports, Business and Philanthropy Luncheon on Tuesday, December 9 at The Sports Museum of America, beginning at 12:30 p.m.? At the event, former New York Giants star defensive lineman George Martin will receive the Bill Walsh Champion of Change Award for his many charitable endeavors and All Stars will announce a new partnership with current Giants star Justin Tuck to highlight his upcoming philanthropic efforts with disadvantaged children.

?All Stars Helping Kids has been making a difference on the West Coast for almost 20 years now and we?re proud to come back to New York for year two and take our message to a much larger national audience,? Lott said.? ?This year we honor a man who embodies all that the legendary Bill Walsh was about. In George Martin we see honesty, fair play, innovation, duty to community and hard work?and we are also pleased to salute Justin Tuck, a young athlete who is carrying those same values both on and off the field. Justin is already a champion on the field, and his work with kids is creating a legacy that will last well beyond his playing days.? It is a privilege and an honor to stand with both of them on December 9.?

Following the luncheon, All Stars will host a panel discussion entitled ?Creative Philanthropy in a Struggling Economy?.? The panel will feature representatives from a cross-section of industries who will discuss the importance of ?giving-back? during these difficult economic times and how they can pool their resources to improve the learning environment for children in low-income communities.?
