Giants GM Jerry Reese can finally stop that Super Bowl XLVIII countdown clock he kept in the New York Giants? locker room, even throughout his team?s awful 0-6 start to the 2013 season.

In the last six games before Sunday?s matchup with the San Diego Chargers, Eli Manning had only thrown three interceptions. Not bad, considering how Manning struggled early on with turnovers.

But Manning and the Giants looked like they did the first half of this season in the 37-14 loss Sunday in San Diego.

Right from the start, Manning looked terrible against the team the drafted him back in 2004. The fans were quick to remind him through a chorus of ?boos? about what they thought of his decision to spurn the city and go play in New York.

It looked a a rerun from the first six weeks of the season in San Diego this afternoon as the Giants played slow and sloppy in a 37-14 loss to the Chargers (6-7). ?With the defeat, the Giants (5-8) put an official end to their faux playoff intentions and the hope of finishing the season strong.

Turnovers and mistakes ruled the day for the Blue as they were outhustled and out-executed by a Chargers team that simply felt they had more to play for. ?The Giants were never in this game, folks. They fell behind, 24-0, before the half and could not mount any kind of a significant comeback. It was a hard one to watch.

The Chargers were led by QB Philip Rivers (21/28, 249 yds, 3 TD, 0 INT) and RBs Ryan Matthews (29/103/1) and Danny Woodhead (94 total yards) and rookie WR Keenan Allen (2 TD catches). Matthews is the first back to gain 100 yards on the Giants since Carolina's DeAngelo Williams in Week 3.

Just a snoozy first half by the Giants in San Diego for the Giants this afternoon. Miscues on offense and missteps on defense have put them in a 24-0 hole in this clearly one-sided game in the Southern California sun.

The fans, booed the hated Eli Manning for the entire first half, as their Chargers took advantage of two more Giant turnovers for scores. The Giants lead the NFL in turnovers with 32 and have not gone a single game this season now without committing at least one.

In the first quarter after hitting Hakeem Nicks for a 51-yard gain, Manning was picked off on a pass that deflected off an apathetic Rueben Randle. The Chargers would capitalize on the turnover on a 43-yard TD strike from Philip Rivers to rookie WR Keenan Allen.

The Giants have been locking up the run the past two months. No team has been able to run on them. But stopping the pass has been a challenge. San Diego QB Philip Rivers completes 70% of his passes. That worries me. Rivers has a full compliment of weapons to choose from, especially two very capable TEs. The Giants have had some issues covering TEs if you haven't noticed....

RB Danny Woodhead has been a constant for the Chargers catching the ball out of the backfield. He is the key to this ballgame. If the Giants' can limit him from bleeding them, they have a shot in this game.

Each week, I will be taking a look at the Giants? media notes to pull out some interesting facts about the upcoming opponent.

In Week 14, the Giants (5-7) head out west to take on Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers (5-7)

The Giants will need plenty of help if any shot at the playoffs is possible, but they can at least play the role of spoiler against a Chargers? team that is hanging onto playoff hope by a thread.

A wise man was once asked, "What do you call a team that finds a new way to lose every week?"

"Losers" he said with a straight face.

I agree. And this year's Giants - for many reasons - may end up being losers. Yes, that means 8-8 or less, Giant fans.

The San Diego Chargers (4-3, 2nd place AFC West) come to the Meadowlands this afternoon to face the New York Giants (5-3, 3rd place NFC East).

This is the first time in 14 years the Chargers have come east to play the Giants.? The last time San Diego was here was in 1995 - the infamous "Snowball Game".

In training camp, no one thought the season would hinge on one game this early on.? The threat level is bordering orange into red.? The season could be in danger.

This week's game against San Diego, and almost every game from here on out, will be "must-win" affairs.

Coach Tom Coughlin has his group on high alert and even Eli Manning has a sense of urgency about him.

Chargers QB Philip Rivers was a New York Giant for about a minute during the early moments of the 2004 NFL draft.? After the Giants selected him fourth overall, he was traded to San Diego along with a booty of draft picks in return for top pick Eli Manning.

These players will always be connected through that trade, and with Miami of Ohio's Ben Roethlisberger, who was passed over in favor of them and picked eleventh by the Steelers.

Rivers has not worn a football jersey in New York since that day.? He has yet to face a New York audience as a player.? None of this is his doing.? The schedule has kept him out of Giants Stadium until now.
