giants defensive coordinator

The DC search continues for the Giants this week. Many feel the familiarity of Steve Spagnuolo puts him in the lead for the job.

Newsflash: the familiarity they're talking about is long gone. Other than secondary coach Dave Merritt, there is no one left from his 2008 defensive coaching staff, the last season Spagnoulo was here. It was so long ago, none of the players from that team are still here, either.

Sure, Tom Coughlin likes familiarity, but that has worked against him as much as it's worked for him.?There is a wide field of candidates to choose from right now. Don't get me wrong, I like Spags, but his recent track record is too spotty for me.

The Giants have requested, and received, permission to interview Buffalo Bills defensive line coach Pepper Johnson for their defensive coordinator position (Holroyd, Jan. 10).

After spending 13 seasons coaching various defensive positions with the New England Patriots, he spent last season serving as the Buffalo Bills defensive line coach. Johnson has ties with the Giants organization, he played?linebacker for them from 1986-92 and won two Super Bowls with the team.

"I would have to calm down my emotions, but I would love that opportunity," Johnson said regarding a potential return to the Giants.
