This week?s game is the fifth annual MetLife Bowl. The Jets won the inaugural game, 17-3, in 2011. The MetLife Bowl refers to the annual preseason game between the co-owners of MetLife Stadium, with both teams battling for the Snoopy Trophy. Snoopy is the brand icon for MetLife, the New York City-based insurance company.
The Daily News Live crew debates which team will shine in the annual Jets vs. Giants preseason contest.
Last year at this time, Giants WR Odell Beckham, Jr. was just an ordinary citizen who had yet to jump tall buildings in a single bound. His reputation and resume have grown exponentially since then. You'd be hard-pressed to find a sports fan these days that is oblivious to the growing legend of the Giants' young star.

The Giants moved to 4-0 on the preseason with another second half victory led by the backups. It was a coming out party of sorts for backup QB Ryan Nassib, who appears to have won the primary backup job. Nassib went 8/12 for 103 yards and three TDs to lead the Giants to a 35-24 win over the Jets at MetLife Stadium Friday night.
After the starters got outplayed by the Jets on both sides of the ball for the first 28 minutes of the game, QB Eli Manning, who was getting pounded like a drum by the Jets (who weren't even blitzing BTW), engineered a 11-play, 91-yard drive that resulted in a 15-yard TD reception by WR Rueben Randle to get the Giants with three right before halftime.

With roster cuts on the horizon and the Giants needing to show some continuity on offense early, tonight's game vs the Jets is the most important of the preseason. Forget the so-called "rivalry", the real contests will be for jobs and peace of mind.
Some key things to watch for....
Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is concerned, but not panicking. But he wants to see progress tonight.
"Based on last week I would hope that there is a significant production and better quality of play from our one?s certainly," said Coughlin.

I went with the Saints on the road over the Panthers, and until the last drive, I was sitting pretty. But of course, Cam Newton hits former Giant Domenik Hixon for a touchdown, which allows Carolina to cover the spread.
Then I take a gamble and bet against the Seahawks at home with the Cardinals. I was really just expecting the Cards to cover the 10.5-point spread, and not only did they do that, but they wound up winning the game. Go figure.

The Chiefs and Bears came up short for me last week, but I earned wins with the Giants and Packers.
Here are this week?s picks. I?ll be using the point spreads from Yahoo! Sports. Feel free to include your picks for these or any other of the week?s games in the comments section. Good luck!

But it's the offense that the Giants and their fans are concerned about right now. The offensive line has begun it's transition with Jim Cordle starting at center and Justin Pugh at right tackle. Pugh was brought in to be a starter. Cordle has been buried on the Giants' roster for the past few years.
Cordle, a UDFA out of Ohio State, feels he's ready for his closeup after spending several seasons behind the likes of Shaun O'Hara and David Bass. In college, he actually trained under Jets' Pro Bowl center Nick Mangold during his time in Columbus.
"We have a rookie quarterback also," said Eli Manning after it was mentioned the Jets were starting the rookie Smith. "I?ve been working with him (Ryan Nassib) and this week things seem simple and all of a sudden, it?s Jet week and you get a lot of different looks in their personnel and alignments. For the rookies there?s a lot going on and a lot of things can get blended in together. You just try to work with them and teach them and get some plays that they feel comfortable with and get them in a good rhythm."
The annual rivalry game has become blase in recent years, with both teams just focusing on readying their teams for roster cutdowns, which are due next week. Giants QB Eli Manning still looks forward to the game, however.

When it counted for real late last season, the New York Giants got a huge play from wide receiver Victor Cruz that drastically turned their own fortunes for the better and that of their MetLife Stadium co-tenants, the New York Jets, for the worse.
Cruz?s 99-yard touchdown catapulted the Giants (1-1, preseason) from mere playoff hopefuls to eventual Super Bowl champions, while a providing the key turning point in the Jets? three-game, season-ending tailspin.

On the other hand, the offense did not score a TD until the 4th quarter when rookie RB Joe Martinek took a swing pass from Ryan Perrilloux and sailed over the pylon for a questionable score from 14 yards out. K Lawrence Tynes kicked FGs of 30, 35, 40 and 45 yards. Rookie WR Rueben Randle had the longest gain of the night for the Giants, a 49-yard pass play down the middle of the field from David Carr.
Tom Coughlin: "I thought that Lawrence Tynes performed very, very well tonight. I thought that both defenses, the Jets defense and the Giants defense, played very well. Certainly I was pleased to win the game, that?s the idea. We got a chance to play a lot of people again. I was not pleased with the interception. I was not pleased with the blocked punt. We?re going to have to go back and work on that. We certainly have a lot of work to do and a long way to go. Some people had a chance to step up tonight and played very well, particularly on the defensive side of the ball with some individual plays that stood out, offensively as well. For the second preseason game I was glad to see the improvement, particularly we saw improvement on the defensive side of the ball, but we?ve got a lot of work to do."

I know many writers have said that LB is a focal point, but with Michael Boley (hamstring) and Jacquian Williams (hip) still out, it doesn't appear any decisions will be made soon. Keith Rivers will start for Boley at WLB, ?Chase Blackburn will start in the middle and Mathias Kiwanuka will line up at SAM. Mark Herzlich is being groomed to be the MLB of the future and he will see significant action tonight. The team also likes Spencer Paysinger at WLB, but Rivers apparently has leapfrogged over him on the depth chart.
Since everyone is putting their two cents in on what to focus on tonight, let me join the fray from the Giants side....

With Ballard officially ruled out for this afternoon?s tilt against the Jets the Giants might be caught with their red velvet pants down around their black leather boots. Even if they do suit up, both Bear Pascoe and Travis Beckum are battling injuries that have been hampering them throughout the month. They were limited in practice today.
The Jets struggle against TE?s which makes the razor thin depth chart particularly frustrating. Ordinarily, the situation would not be ideal. Compound it with the fact Mario Manningham is likely a no-go today and the Giants officially can?t get out of their own way.

DE Osi Umenyiora (ankle, knee), TE Jake Ballard (knee) and LB Mark Herzlich (ankle) have been ruled out of tomorrow's game vs the Jets.
WR Mario Manningham (knee) has not practiced all week and is doubtful. RB DJ Ware (knee) is questionable.
He sure threw up a dud last week for his fantasy owners, but if you were able to survive, consider that just a blip and not a sign of things to come. Manning had a long touchdown pass slip through Hakeem Nicks' hands, and another called back on holding, while one of his interceptions should be credited to Mario Manningham. Yes, the Jets' secondary is strong, but so is Manning. Roll with him if you've got him.

Bradshaw did not practice today, but practiced yesterday - a switch from his recent routine since coming back from a fractured bone in his foot.
"It was just to get it over with," he told reporters. "I want to be as healthy as I can for this game. I wanted to freshen up on a lot of things just to be competitive."
I'm not really worried that Revis will totally shut down Hakeem Nicks, who needs to have a big game to make up for his blunderous performance against the Redskins. If Eli Manning and Nicks are playing at their highest level, not even Revis can keep them quiet. What I'm more afraid of is that Manning will simply shy away from throwing in Revis' direction simply based on his reputation, as teams often seem to do against top cornerbacks. Giants receivers have said they are not afraid of Revis, which is the correct attitude.
For what it's worth, the series finale of "Lost" probably would have been a lot less disappointing had it taken place on Revis Island.

"I think if you were to sit down in August and say that with two games to go you'd have your destiny in your hands, not depending on somebody else, you'd say, 'Okay, sign me up for that.'," the coach said today.
He of course was referring to the Giants' playoff map, which is if they win both remaining games on their schedule, they are NFC champs.

Tickets to sporting events are a luxury in this day and age. They are also a valuable commodity. Online ticket services have made it easy to unload and profit off of your assets.
Conversely, it also gives opposing fans an opportunity to gobble up huge chunks of real estate in your stadium for game day.

The place will be illuminated in Jet green so at least it will give the appearance that Christmas is in the air. To the Giants and the Jets this is no time for merriment. These teams are both desperate for a win and will put the setting of this affair in the back of their minds and go for the kill. Is that cranberry sauce? More like blood in the water.
This was supposed to be a fun game where sibling rivals faced off to see who gets to tap the keg when its over. Instead, the loser will be on the edge of the playoff cliff looking for a root to grab on to.
Coughlin said it was an old injury that was aggravated in yesterday's game and hopes its not a "season-ender". Ballard left the field right before halftime, but returned for the second half. He only had one catch for 15 yards on the day.
WR Devin Thomas, who was immobilized and carted off the field at halftime, has been cleared to practice. Coughlin said he has a "burner."
"In my eyes, he?s one of the toughest quarterbacks in the game," Nicks said of Manning, who did not address Burress? comments with the media Friday.
"You never know when he?s playing through pain. You never know what?s hurting him. He?s going to go out here each time and give you his all. That?s what you look forward to having in a leader."Safety Deon Grant spoke (a bit vaguely) about the responsibility of coaches to players, referencing Burress' unhappiness after his "incident":

Plaxico Burress never shuts up.
The NY Giant fans loved Plaxico for everything he did en route to winning the SuperBowl.?? The NFC Championship game against the Green Bay Packers was a complete domination by a wide receiver.? He was a one man band who took the team on his back and won the game against all odds.? It was the single best game I had ever seen a wide receiver have.
- Although Kevin Gilbride doesn?t feature the tight end, it?s almost embarrassing how barren the Giants are at the position.? Tight ends were targeted just six times on 42 pass attempts, and Travis Beckum led tight ends with three targets.? He hauled in two passes for 16 yards, while Bear Pascoe and Daniel Coats were held without a catch.? Jake Ballard had a nice 21 yard reception, but he is known much more for his blocking.
Beckum was drafted to be a DallasClark-type pass catcher, but thus far he has done little to distinguish himself.? It?ll be interesting to see if any notable tight ends are cut over the next week.

There will be no rail service to or from the Meadowlands for tomorrow's Giants-Jets game.
NYC is also planning on taking all mass transit out of service midday.
The game between the Giants and the Jets, originally set for 7pm tomorrow has been moved up to 2pm. Giants' CEO John Mara said it was "the right thing to do". Can't argue with him there. Folks here were freaked out on Tuesday when a 5.8 magnitude earthquake rattled the Big Apple sending thousands into the streets. With the tenth anniversary of the Sept 11 attacks just two weeks away, New Yorkers were already on edge...
Giants coach Tom Coughlin said he had not been keeping up with the news about the weather but had planned on catching up quickly. He also said the first team would at around "30-35" plays in tomorrow's game.

A state of emergency has been declared in both New York and New Jersey even though the most recent forecasts have downgraded Irene from a Category 3 storm to a Category 1.
"We moved the start time based on the weather forecast and to give everybody an opportunity to get home safely after the game," said Giants President and CEO John Mara. "There are, obviously, many issues to consider. Our players played a game on Monday night, the stadium personnel has to secure the building post-game and, most importantly, the safety and welfare of Giants and Jets fans. We felt like this is the right thing to do."
