Giants Mini-Camp

Giants' Summer Report, or GSR, is a weekly series focusing on the state of the team heading into the 2012-2013 season. Each week will feature an in depth look at a different part of the team & organization.

This week the series will focus on the players that are still available on the free agent market. There are a handful of veterans that could provide depth to the Giants' roster and possibly compete for starting positions.

The NFL released the full slate of all teams' OTAs and mini camp dates this afternoon. The Giants will open with rookie mini camp next week at TIMEX (May 11-13) and will hold mini camp for the full squad from June 12-14.

OTAs will be held in between the two camps: May 23-24, May 30-June 1, June 4-5 and June 7-8.

*Clubs are permitted to hold a rookie minicamp on one of the first two weekends after the NFL Draft and conduct one mandatory minicamp for veteran players. There is no restriction on the number of minicamps a club may hold for rookie players.

Giants' DE At Career Crossroads

All is not quiet on the defensive front.

We've been telling you about the battle at defensive end, where Osi Umenyiora is determined to get his starting job back?after he missed the 2008 season and struggled last year.

Umenyiora said the right things when asked about his role on Tuesday, but when asked what would happen if he didn't start, he said this:

RB Andre Brown Is Ready To Fulfill Promise

At this year's draft, there was a buzz that the Giants were going to take a running back high in the draft.? C.J. Spiller of Clemson was a very tempting target and the rumors were that the Giants had coveted the speedster.

Those rumors may have been true, for all we know, but Spiller was long gone by the time the Giants were ready to make their first selection.? They ended up not taking any running backs at all.

There are two theories behind that.? The first is the fact that the RB pool in the draft this year was very shallow.? The other is that the Giants were waiting to see how well second-year RB Andre Brown had progressed from Achilles' surgery.

Reese Moving Forward After Hixon Injury

GM Jerry Reese said today that Domenik Hixon's injury was "part of the game" and that someone needed to step up and take his place as the team's punt returner.

Reese noted that Mario Manningham was a possibility as was Aaron Ross.? He also did not rule out a trade.

There have been issues with Field Turf around the league. It has to get played on and matted-down a bit for it players to feel comfortable.

Hixon Injury Puts Sinorice Back In the Picture

Jeff Feagles continued to work with the rookie punters, Jy Bond and Matt Dodge. Both can absolutely pound the ball, but finesse is another story.? So is consistency.

The backup quarterback competition is on.? Jim Sorgi is the veteran, but Riley Skinner has been throwing well and is giving Rhett Bomar a run for his money. Skinner can put some mustard on the ball.

TE Kevin Boss was on the field but did not participate. He is on schedule for training camp, though.? RB Ahmad Bradshaw is still ambling around, but he also should be ready go by camp.

New Stadium Turf to Blame...?

The Giants told reporters today that WR Domenik Hixon will miss the 2010 season with a torn ACL.

Hixon injured his knee in yesterday's open-house practice in the new stadium. The new turf is suspected to have played a part in Hixon's injury, but Tom Coughlin has said that the players were all wearing the recommended footwear.

Coughlin also said the "turf people" would be taking another look at the field, which is being used by the Jets today.

Giant Support for Darrelle

LeBron James aside, it's become the biggest story in New York sports. Darrelle Revis wants to be the highest paid cornerback in the league, which means the Jets'?star is seeking more than $15 million a year. So far, the Jets have balked at such demands. On Monday, on the first day of the Jets' mini-camp, Revis sat out a few plays, eventually admitting that he was staging a protest over the stalled negotiations.

Giants' defensive ends Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora were clear about where they stand.

"Pay the man," Tuck?told ESPN New York yesterday following day one of mini-camp. "I'll tell you the truth, some people don't deserve what they're asking for, but he does."

ESPN's Sal Paolantonio Reports From the New Meadowlands Stadium

Unfortunately, the actual head count at the afternoon practice is nowhere near the 30,000 the Giants thought were coming. Their estimates were based tickets that were applied for online.

The tickets were free, so the guess is people went in and grabbed as many as they could, and then realized they couldn't use them.

Tom Coughlin Post Practice Interview: Highlights

Q: How did the group look?

A: They did all right. One side does okay that means the other side didn't. And the other side does okay and that means the original side didn't. So it is back and forth. But there is good enthusiasm. They know what this is. It signifies the end of the offseason. And they want to get it together going into the time off. So they know exactly what they are doing and they have worked hard. And it has been a good offseason for us. So let's hope we finish strong.

Q: How do things look back there in the secondary with Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant?

Fewell, New Giants' Defense Make Debut In New Stadium Tuesday

The Giants' three-day mandatory mini camp begins tomorrow. If you're heading out to the New Meadowlands Stadium Tuesday for what will be an open practice, or if you simply plan to?stay home and let GFB?deliver you your?Giants' fix, here are three important storylines heading into the week:

Where there's "Fewell" there's fire: We start here because of how abysmal the defense was a year ago. As a result, Bill Sheridan is out and Fewell is in. The early reviews are great, from players and coaches. Safeties coach David Merritt summed it up best:

"He's getting after guys in a positive, constructive way," Merritt said about Fewell.?"I mean, it's a beautiful thing, it's infectious. That's what you need and that's what we need as an organization, especially on defense."

Hello GFB community. I will be doing a weekly blog post, focusing on areas where I think the Giants could use some improvement. Expect to see me every Thursday.

For my first post I thought I would try to establish a rubric, so to speak, for my own dissatisfaction with the MLB situation.? I know it seems sometimes that I (Igs) am only seeing this thing from the ?glass half empty? perspective, but in truth there are a number of important angles that inform my reservations:

How close are the Giants?

2-Day Camp Gives Little Indication of What Lies Ahead

There has been quite a bit bit of grumbling on the net about the Giants' latest draft class being a weak group.

Some say GM Jerry Reese is leaving too much to chance by taking players with so little football experience.

Others believe the Giants will pay a steep price for passing on such linebackers as Sean Weatherspoon, Sean Lee, Daryl Washington and Donald Butler in favor of defensive lineman they don't need.? Now, there are the rumors of how badly the team's rookie camp went, as few players distinguished themselves.

Kentucky's Micah Johnson Emerges From Rookie Camp With Contract

The Giants, in their quest to fill the shoes of the departed Antonio Pierce at MLB, have another name to throw into the fray.? (Notice we didn't say "mix", a term Tom Coughlin is not a fan of.)?

Walk-on linebacker Micah Johnson, who was a multiple All-SEC selection at Kentucky, will reportedly sign a contract with the Giants this week.

The source is Johnson himself, who posted the news of the contract offer on his Facebook page today.? If it is true, he will go to mini camp in June and compete for a spot on the Giants' linebacker corps.

Rookies Get Good Taste of What It's Like to Be a Giant

Yesterday I was privileged with the opportunity to attend Day Two of the Giants'? annual Rookie Mini Camp.

I joined a small group of media people that included the local beat reporters in observing the latest crop of youngsters chosen to don the vaunted Giant blue.

The morning session contained two influential outside forces that made everyone a bit uncomfortable.? The temperature, which rose to the mid-80's by 11am, and a ridiculously loud rock music festival being held in the parking lot.

Coaches Have Lots Of Young Talent To Work With

With 44-year-old Jeff Feagles no longer on their roster, the Giants will inherently become a younger team? They will also add about seven-to-ten of the 22 or 23-year-olds that hit the field at the Timex Performance Center yesterday, which will make them even a younger team.

Coach Tom Coughlin seemed generally pleased with the group of over 50 first and second-year players invited to the camp.? He mentioned a few by name.?? Tim Brown, a 5'8" free-agent wide receiver from nearby Rutgers, was one of those players.

For most of the players, they are relieved in a way that the draft is over and they are getting settled into the world of the NFL.

Free Agent QB Looking To Stick With Big Blue

With Eli Manning, Jim Sorgi and Rhett Bomar all headed to camp with the New York Giants, there doesn?t appear to be room on the roster for another Quarterback. But don?t tell that to Dominic Randolph.

The 23-year-old from Holy Cross, who ended his college career as the most decorated quarterback in school history, signed a free agent contract with Big Blue earlier this week and expects to fight tooth-and-nail for a job.

"I'm definitely excited right now," Randolph told the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, "but I'm going to be getting to work and showing them what I can do on the next level. I'm looking forward to being part of a great organization."
