It wasn't a masterpiece by the Giants against the Steelers on Saturday night at MetLife, but it could have been worse. They could have lost. Instead, the Giants won their second preseason game in as many tries, 20-16.

Two plays defined the game for the Giants: a 73-yard TD scamper by Rashad Jennings in the first quarter and a 3-yard fade from backup QB Curtis Painter to WR Corey Washington in the corner of the end zone late in the fourth for the deciding score.

On Saturday night, the Giants will travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers (7:30 PM ET, 4NY). Winning is secondary in the preseason. What you want is for the team to stay healthy; you want to see some players emerge while solidifying the final roster. Then you want to get out of there and be ready for the regular season.

The most controversial call stemming from the New York Giants-Pittsburgh Steelers bout last Sunday was, of course, the play in the end zone in which Ryan Clark was flagged for an unsportsmanlike penalty after hitting Victor Cruz in the chest.

Sooner or later, rolling the dice in the fourth quarter was bound to catch up with the New York Giants, who rarely seem to make things easy on themselves, even when they are contending for ? and even winning ? Super Bowl titles.

Tom Coughlin was not pleased with team's performance in today's 24-20 loss to Pittsburgh....

"That's as disappointing a loss as we've had around here in a long time. I think. Not to be overly reactionary or emotional, but to play a very good football team like that, and to have two illegal procedure penalties take us out of field goal range in the first half and have a third down where we are offside creating a 4th-and-3 where they have to kick a field goal, and covering kicks and punts the way we did was terrible, was awful. Offensively, again, for a couple games in a row we didn't play well. We didn't appear to be very aggressive. We certainly didn't have any first downs. I'm sure our time of possession was. They've been averaging 35 minutes time of possession coming in and I'm sure they got the same amount today. We didn't tackle well, we didn't stop the run well. They surprised me with some of the runs they called in situations you would expect them to be aggressive and throw. We didn't make them pay obviously with that offside. We wanted emotionally so badly to win the game for obvious reasons, for all our neighbors who are struggling and who need some type of inspiration. Of course, we didn't provide it for them. We didn't play well and we are going to have to get this straightened around, some way, some form here, quickly obviously. That was not the kind of game we had planned to play"

First half....the Giants came out strong on defense and Justin Tuck led the way with a loss of 9 on a sack. After that Eli Manning went 3rd and out and punted.

The Giants got the ball back and throw a pick to Ike Taylor after being pressured by the Steelers' defensive line. The Steelers did capitalize on this turnover and scored in the 2nd quarter on a Ben Roethlisberger to Emmanuel Sanders 4 yard touchdown. 7-0 Steelers.

What went wrong?

Isaac Redman gashed New York for 147 yards and the game-winning scramble into the end zone.?For a while, the Giants stifled the running game, but somehow forgot how to do it in the fourth quarter.

After holding Pittsburgh to 3-8 on third down, the Steelers converted 3 of their final 5 attempts. The strong mix of run and pass threw New York off guard and rendered their rush ineffective.

The fans came out in full force today, many of them still entwined in Sandy's unforgiving grasp. They were served a helluva football game by two of the league's most clutch teams.

Eli Manning and his counterpart, Ben Roethlisberger both specialize in fourth quarter heroics. This time the fourth quarter did not belong to the Giants. In fact, much of the first three quarters didn't, either, even though they led for the majority of the game.

The Giants led 20-10 after three quarters but then unraveled, allowing the Steelers to score 14 unanswered points, which could have been more. Pittsburgh attempted a fake FG on one drive and were stopped short of the first down.?The Giants went down with a whimper, going 3-and-out in all three of their 4th quarter possessions.

Once again, it's hard to concentrate on football with all that's going (and not going) on around here. This is not the venue to vent, however. Emotions are high and the Giants thrive on adversity, as we all know. I would be shocked (shocked, I say) if they came out flat today and got outhustled. Not making any predictions, because predicting Giant games the past few years is a pretty much a crapshoot.

Today, the Giants host the Steelers in a game that could make or break Pittsburgh's season. It also could put the Giants in the driver's seat in the NFC East.

The Giants are 6-2 and sitting atop the NFC East, 2 1/2 games ahead of the 3-4 Eagles and Cowboys and 3 games in front of Washington. ?With a W, the Blue maintains that lead at the least. That's provided the other teams all win, which is unlikely. The Redskins are hosting the struggling Panthers, so they have the best shot at a win this week. Dallas is in Atlanta to face the undefeated Falcons and the Eagles will be in New Orleans tomorrow night, where the Saints have a clear advantage. Can't see the NFC East going 4-0 this week.

Kel Dansby:?The Steelers will head straight to the stadium before the game and NFL players are creatures of habit, so I see them getting off to a slow start. Both teams have their issues on the offensive line but the Steelers will be with out their top 2 rushers. The Giants will find a way to win a very ugly game against this pass happy Pittsburgh squad. Giants 23, ?Steelers 20

Sam Spiegelman:?These are not your father's Steelers; this defense is penetrable and this offense has many obvious flaws. Big Ben is arguably the best quarterback against an aggressive defensive front, but this offensive line is too suspect for me to bet against Jason Pierre-Paul and Co. Then, I expect Eli Manning to bounce back against a mediocre pass defense that is still without its star, Troy Polamalu. It'll be a struggle to find the end zone, but in the end the G-Men win this one for New York and New Jersey.?Giants 23, Steelers 19

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, those in the New York-New Jersey area are still scrambling for gas and awaiting their lights to turn back on. Yet despite the hiccup, the Giants-Steelers game Sunday is slated to go on as scheduled.

Sunday was also supposed to be the date of the annual New York City Marathon, but after announcing the race would go on throughout the week Mayor Michael Bloomberg had no choice but to cancel it yesterday afternoon.

The cancellation of the Marathon begs the question of whether all sporting events should be postponed in light of the area's cleanup efforts.

The Giants will be facing the Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday, two storied NFL franchises that have won four of the last seven Super Bowls. Giants' head coach Tom Coughlin began to size up the Steelers publicly yesterday at TIMEX.

"Pittsburgh Steelers. The tradition, we had talked about tradition in the National Football League. You don?t get any more traditional than the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh?Steelers. The Steelers are 4-3, they?ve lost three games on the road and they?re a very, very good football team.

They are 11th in the league on offense, they are second on defense. They?re traditionally a tremendous, powerful football team, very physical football team. They have an outstanding return game, they?ve had a couple of punt returns called back that were touchdowns. They have this young kid from Florida (running back Chris) Rainey. They have an outstanding kick returner.

No, you haven't traveled back to 2003. Kerry Collins led the Titans past Philadelphia earlier this afternoon, and by doing so has given the Giants a golden opportunity tomorrow night.

With a win over a drowning Dallas team, the Giants will break the tie for 1st in the NFC East. A win would also place New York in a two-way tie with Atlanta for 1st in the NFC.

Atlanta defeated Cincinnati today to advance to 5-2. The Falcons (and the Giants should they win) are a 1/2 a game behind the Jets and Steelers for 1st in the NFL.

"Disappointed we didn't win, obviously. I think we played hard, we gave up some rushing yards, particularly in the second half in the middle there. That's a concern. Bomar went in there and he got hit a number of times, unfortunately - I'm sure he'll be sore tomorrow, but he showed some toughness, he showed some ability in there. He did a good job with maneuvering the offensive plays around. We each had a turnover. In the second half, we didn't get any turnovers and I think that'll be a key factor and not having anything in point blank range and not having anything we can convert in the short field. It was a physical game. We knew it would be. We've had two good opponents, two outstanding physical teams. I was disappointed we didn't win."
