Today is the last day before the Giants report to their 2015 training camp out at QDTC. It's a good thing, too, because today is supposed to be the hottest day of the summer. The forecast for the rest of the week is calling for hot temps, but not like today.

Here's the latest on the "camp battles" raging on out at QDTC through the first preseason games...

Backup QB: Ryan Nassib has looked just OK. He's throwing the ball better than last season, that is for sure. He's a bit more poised, but he does not look as if he's going force the Giants to cut Curtis Painter. Painter is 10-10 passing this preseason with a nice corner fade for a TD to his credit. Painter looks like he's staying unless something drastic happens.

TE: Larry Donnell is the current starter and has held his own in practice and in games. Daniel Fells has a bruised knee and may miss another week, but he has performed well in his chances. Kellen Davis is an experienced blocker and short yardage receiver. A likely keeper. Adrien Robinson is on the roster bubble. He needs to step things up quickly here or face the Turk. Rookie Xavier Grimble (hamstring) could spend 2014 on IR.

On this off day, it's time to reflect on who had made an impression thus far at Giants' camp and who has not. ?Yes, there is still a long way to go until first cuts (from 90 to 75 by August 26, and then to 53 by August 31), but it's never too early to take the team's temperature. ?The five preseason games will reveal a lot, too, but for now let's cover what's been going on...

"Good Vibrations," the song I have traditionally started my summer off to for the past 47 years. Some of the players have given off those good vibrations in camp this summer are rookie LB Devon Kennard, TE Larry Donnell and CB Walter Thurmond III.

From our colleague Ed Valentine over at Big Blue View:

The New York Giants worked out wearing shoulder pads for the first time on Thursday, and the most physical practice of training camp included a couple of skirmishes.

Defensive tackle Marvin Austin got into some extra-curriculars that appeared to be with first-round pick Justin Pugh. Guard Brandon Mosley might also have been in the middle of that one.

Terrell Thomas, Jason Pierre-Paul, Chris Snee, Henry Hynoski and Markus Kuhn will all start training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

No shockers here. Thomas hasn't played since 2010 and the others are still in the midst of rehabbing from their various injuries/surgeries.

Snee (hip) did not participate in minicamp and may not be ready to go full tilt for another few weeks or so.

Bob Papa has made the call on more than one occasion: "Lawrence Tynes has kicked the Giants to the Super Bowl!"

Those calls will forever hold their place in Giants' folklore, and they will have to now that the Giants have let Tynes go via free agency. Tynes signed on with Tampa Bay last week after their PK, Connor Barth, tore his Achilles tendon at a charity basketball game and was deemed lost for the season.

The Giants had no designs on resigning Tynes, whose leg strength and accuracy tailed off last season. They decided to look for a more powerful leg.

The Giants will not be going up the Turnpike to Albany for training camp this summer and perhaps for good. They had held camp at the University of Albany 16 of the past 17 seasons.

From the Giants:

"The University at Albany and the Capital Region have been great hosts for us during our training camps. UAlbany truly has been the summer home of the Giants. We are grateful to Mayor Jennings and to Dr. McElroy and his staff in the athletic department for making us feel welcome and providing the resources we needed to prepare for the season. We are fortunate to have a facility in the Timex Performance Center that allows us to hold training camp here. We have told Mayor Jennings and Dr. McElroy that we will evaluate our training camp situation on an ongoing basis and certainly would not rule out a return to Albany in the future if it makes sense for both parties.? - Giants President and Chief Executive Officer John Mara and Chairman and Executive Vice President Steve Tisch in a joint statement.

From our colleague Jimmy Kempski:

It?s time to start paying attention to Will Hill if you?re a Giants fan. ?He has been getting a ton of reps with the 1?s, and extra reps with the 2?s. ?It?s clear that the coaching staff really likes him. ?And how do I know that? ?Because they yell at him a lot. ?Before the play, during the play, after the play, you name it. ??Be physical Will! ?Jam him up Will! ?Jam him up!? ?If they didn?t like him, he?d be running with the 3?s. ?

They?ve been using him a lot in the box, and today he covered the slot receivers and TEs quite a bit. ?He may very well play a big role for the Giants? defense this year, ?especially with the uncertainty of Terrell Thomas? knee. ?At all 32 camps, reporters are prefacing questions by first saying ?The NFL is changing with the usage of more athletic tight ends like Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez?? and then they finish their question, usually asking how you stop those two TE sets. ?If there hasn?t already been that question posed with Will Hill in mind already, there will be soon. ?Here?s some tape of Hill in college at Florida against Georgia. ?He had himself a game:

The Giants' defensive line is already one of the league's best. No team has a stable of quality ends like the Blue, and now their interior line is stepping up their games as well.

Chris Canty, Linval Joseph, Marvin Austin, Rocky Bernard and Markus Kuhn are being joined by the 350 lb 12-year vet, Shaun Rogers - a former Pro Bowler who the team will use to fill gaps (no pun intended).

The 33 year-old Rogers is being counted on to rub off some knowledge on the younger players and to defray the possible loss of Canty (knee), who has still not been cleared to practice by the medical staff.

Douglas, Hill Turning Heads in Albany This Week

It happens every summer. Players come to Albany and voila! Stars are born. After the first week of camp, two players - one on offense and one on defense - have been making a lasting impression on the Giants' coaches.

West Orange native Will Hill, a safety who washed out of Florida for his questionable off-field activities, went undrafted last April. No one bothered to sign him. After a year of soul-searching, Hill was approached by the Giants for a tryout. The former HS star easily showed why he was one of the most-highly sought after recruits in 2007.

Tom Coughlin was finally pleased with practice. The hot weather brought out the feistiness that Coughlin promotes during practice. There were also some casualties thanks to the heat...

"Yeah, it was dehydration," revealed the coach. "Right at the end (DB Jayron) Hosley went off with what I think was a calf cramp. A little bit earlier there was another one. We had some guys who lathered up pretty good today, so it was good for them. The big guys lathered up real good."

LBs Michael Boley and Jake Muasau both sat out again with hamstring issues. OT James Brewer's back sidelined him for a second consecutive day.

Some highlights from Monday's media sessions with players and coaches.....

"I fell down once, too. I didn?t get any attention for it, though." - Tom Coughlin, referring to all the slipping and falling his players did on the dry surface yesterday.

"Maybe, before 2006. Maybe. Because ?06 is when I had the little hip issue and since then it?s just been one thing or another, so it?s been maybe about six years." - DE Osi Umenyiora on the last time he recalls being healthy in training camp.

"Every year is a new year. It?s pretty easy to turn the page. That?s history, it?s in the books. It?s time to look to the future and see what we can do this season and we?re very excited about the challenges of having the opportunity to repeat. That?s a good problem to have." - Giants GM Jerry Reese

The Giants come into camp high on confidence and low on respect. They feel they have what it takes to repeat as Super Bowl champions, but the odds are stacked against them. No team has repeated since the 2003 New England Patriots. In fact, no champion has even returned to the Super Bowl the next season.

Since '07, The Giants have won twice, but their victories were four years apart. The Steelers, Colts and Patriots have all made multiple trips in the big game since '05 but none of them in consecutive seasons.

Three practices in the books and number four coming up this afternoon. It will be in full pads and now we will see who is worth their salt around here.

Yesterday, the Giants were back on the grass in a spirited session in shells. You can read our camp notes and Tom Coughlin's post-practice comments below. LBs Keith Rivers and Michael Boley sat out of practice with hamstring issues.?RB Da'Rel Scott also did not practice due to a swollen ankle.

CB Terrell Thomas has only made it through one practice with his reconstructed knee. It's early, and he doesn't want to push it. He was icing it down after he came off the field yesterday.

The Giants will be back on the field today in Albany for Day Three of their training camp. There is a 60% chance of rain today (it's raining right now, btw) and a chance of showers every day this week. There is no practice Tuesday, however.

So far only one injury to report - DE Justin Trattou - who was carted off the field with an apparent ankle injury yesterday. A bigger deal than it seems. Trattou is the favorite to replace Dave Tollefson in the Giants' defensive line rotation. If he can't go, that means Adrian Tracy is next man up. IMO not good enough to get the job done. Let's hope Trattou is OK....

Day two in the books, barely. The rains came through Albany as practice winded down, but head coach Tom Coughlin seemed pleased his team has yet to be washed out of any drills.

The workout was moved to the lacrosse field, which has a FieldTurf surface. The Giants have not practiced there in the past.

?It?s raining two minutes before you practice, so you have to go where you can practice," Coughlin told reporters afterward. "That's two in a row.We got yesterday?s in, and we had a little trouble with today obviously. When we use the turf field there?s some areas that I didn?t want to get close to, so we did the best we could with one field. We got our practice in, got a lot of people a lot of work. So for our second day, obviously our defense looked a little better today, the offense not so good."

The rain came and the rain went. The Giants practiced for the first time at UAlbany and, well, it went without much excitement (Antrel Rolle's haircut not withstanding). Tom Coughlin was just happy to have his team back on the field....one step at a time....

"We got it in. I was worried this morning. But the weather did help, did cooperate with us this afternoon. We had to come up here because the fields were wet down below. Actually, the turf field would have been okay if we had to go in there but I'm glad to get on the grass."

Giants' head coach Tom Coughlin held his opening presser today at U Albany and was as businesslike as he's ever been. The shine of the club's latest Lombardi Trophy has already dimmed. It's time to get back to work.

His opening message encapsulated all the team's championship catch phrases ("All-In", "Finish") and one wondered how far he can go in the way of motivational hot words.

Today he said he would like his team to regain it's championship form and then "sustain" it - and then finally "finish". ?In his eyes there is no ceiling on what his team can achieve.

The Giants reported to camp in Albany today and were greeted by the usual cadre of reporters. Here are some highlights from those sessions.....

"I enjoy coming to Albany. I think it?s fun to have roommates and staying in dorms. I went to summer camp when I was 10 years old and I kind of feel like I get to go to summer camp at 31. So that?s fun for me and I think that it?s a great team bonding experience. It will be fun with the Olympics going on this year. When the competitions are going on at night, you get to get a bunch of guys in the same room and cheer for the US. So those types of things are fun when you have dorms rather than being in a hotel." - QB Eli Manning on the advantages of training away from home.?

"I really just want to kick those guys? a?es. You know what I?m saying? That?s what it?s all about, you know? I mean, we?re cool, but we ain?t that cool. I kind of got some ill feelings towards them. It?s a game. Every game is the same way. I kind of hate everybody, honestly, in the NFL."?-??TE Martellus Bennett on if their were any 'weird' feelings after playing his whole career in Dallas.

In 2000, only five of the existing 31 NFL franchises held their training camps at their home facilities. The tradition of conducting training camps away from home is slowly becoming a thing of the past. 18 of the 32 NFL teams are now staying home for the summer.

The Giants, who stayed home last year for camp due to the lockout, will be once again making the trek up the turnpike to the University of Albany to train for the next three weeks. It will be the 16th time the Blue has held camp in the state capital, which is the most of any location.

?Albany has been an ideal summer home for our football team,? says Giants President John Mara. ?In addition to the great facilities, we have felt for 15 years that starting our season in Albany gives us the best chance to succeed each season.?
