Yet the team chose not to draft a linebacker.
The Giants bolstered its offensive and defensive lines, added depth to the running back corps and secondary, and even added a pair of linebackers in the form of undrafted free agents Etienne Sabino out of Ohio State and Charles Dieusel of Mount Union.
If drafting prospects is anything but a certainty, how much can the Giants depend on these undrafted talents?
Sabino is athletic but did not impress too much in college. He, too, is more a project at this point. Dieuseul played at a smaller school — in Mount Union — but showed his defensive prowess by earning MVP honors at two different positions.
The Giants parted ways with Michael Boley and Chase Blackburn in the off-season, and in their place signed veteran Dan Connor. Rounding out the depth chart is Mark Herzlich, Jake Muasau, Spencer Paysinger, Keith Rivers and Jacquian Williams.
The Giants also lost Mathias Kiwanuka as he returned to the defensive line.
At this point -- unless there is something the coaching staff sees that we can't -- it appears the Giants have a weakness at the linebacker position ... uncertainty, to say the least.
Among the top linebackers remaining on the free-agent market are former Bears great Brian Urlacher, Karlos Dansby and Daryl Smith.
Urlacher's name has been floated around with both the Bears and NFC North rival Minnesota.
Since being cut by Miami, Dansby has been linked to Buffalo, though drafting Kiko Alonso with the 46th selection has clouded that possibility.
And Smith -- the former Jaguar who was linked to the G-Men at the start of free agency -- has visited St. Louis but left without an offer. The Rams recently traded up for Alec Ogletree in the first round of the draft.
Whether the Giants will add a veteran to the mix has been debated. ESPN NFC East blogger Dan Graziano says no, citing the team is OK at the position. But Big Blue View finds it confusing to allow the team to open training camp with the situation as it is.
I side with the latter; New York needs a veteran presence at the position, especially since it chose not to add talent in the early rounds of the NFL Draft.
