This year's New York Giants defense can be called the "anti-Broncos" for their lack of pressure on the quarterback and their inability to cover in space. CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie had a decent year, but the other 11 positions should all be considered for upgrades the next few months.
Not getting into specific names, the Giants need a minimum of two quality pass-rushers, two more cover corners and a safety this offseason.
They have to shed themsleves of the players who can't stay healthy, with he exception of LB Devon Kennard. That means cutting ties with players they may still have an affinity for such as former first round picks Jason Pierre-Paul and Prince Amukamara, unless they get them a bargain-basement price.
JPP will hopefully be in better condition to handle himself this year, but overpaying him would send the wrong message. Amukamara has played well at times but has a bunch of holes in his game. There are better options in free agency, I'm sure.
Jon Beason, as well-liked as he is, should seriously consider retirement. He's killed the Giants the past two years.
The keepers on this defense are DRC, Kennard, safety Landon Collins and DT Jon Hankins. Everyone else can be replaced.
The Giants will take a cautious approach at safety. Nat Berhe and Mykkele Thompson missed all of last season and will be given an opportunity. I would bring back Craig Dahl for some leadership, depth and special teams ability. But adding another safety is in order.
Kennard should either be moved to MLB or used as an edge rusher. He needs to stay healthy, too. J.T. Thomas is average. Jonathan Casillas and Mark Herzlich are backups and special teams guys.
The defensive line is not what it once was. Robert Ayers and JPP could return but others need to be added. How much of an impact can second-year DE Owa Odighizuwa make in 2016? His strength is not as a pass rusher, anyway.
Hankins got hurt and so did Markus Kuhn. Jay Bromley seems to have a ways to go in my book. Cullen Jenkins will be 35 and has outplayed Kuhn and Bromley for the most part. Should they have kept Linval Joseph? Looks that way.
For those mocking Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott to the Giants in the first round, please get a grip. They have to start thinking need over best available athlete. Why? Because they have a ton of needs. Chances are that the best available athlete will be at a need position anyway.
